Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger
Common Issues
"A processor exception has occurred. Your system may be unstable..."
- Conflicting devices are resident in memory while the game is running. Create a boot disk for the game. (You can use the automatic shortcut maker or boot-disk maker!) and start your system with it before you run the game. If the problem persists, you may need to update your CD-ROM device drivers.
"Exception 13 (during spaceflight only)"
- While in-flight select VGA mode by pressing ALT-1. Go to the spaceflight options by pressing ALT-O. Turn OFF "Frame Rate Switch." If this does not help, create a boot disk with the Origin automatic boot disk maker or automatic shortcut maker (found on this site!).
"Exception 13 (or) Bad .EXP file"
- As with the above, make sure that you have a good boot disk for the game. If the boot disk does not help, you may need to check the CD-ROm for scratches or marks. If the CD-ROM is clean of physical imperfections, you will probably need to get more recent CD-ROM drivers from your manufacturer.
"Bad .TRE file format (or) Bad xxxx chunk in xxxx"
- From the C:\WC3 directory, type DEL *.TRE. This will remove the offending files from your hard drive. If this does not solve the problem, put a *different* Wing Commander III CD into your CD-ROM. Change to your CD-ROM drive letter and type COPY *.TRE C:\WC3. Restart the game.
- The new .TRE files, copied from a different game disk, may allow you past the error message. If they do not, you may need to repeat the process with yet a *different* disk.
"Critical error on file:..\..\
(or) Read failed on file:..\..\ " - Ensure that you are running with the appropriate boot disk for the game. Create one automatically using the Origin 'BOOTDISK' program. If this does not help, check the bottom of the game CD for marks and scratches. If the CD-ROM media has no visible problems, you may need to get a more recent CD-ROM device driver from your hardware manufacturer.
"CVMManager : : getPtr ( )"
- This error message appears when Wing Commander III cannot get enough memory to run. Edit the CONFIG.SYS file on your boot disk by typing EDIT A:\CONFIG.SYS. Make the "BUFFERS=" line read: BUFFERS=25 and change the 'DOS=HIGH' line to read: DOS=LOW. Restart your system with the new configuration and try again.
"Malloc ( ) Failed"
- If you fly 'manually' to a waypoint (meaning that you did not press "A" to AUTOPILOT), you will get this error message. If you cannot (A)utopilot, check around the first action sphere for a transport or 'cargo' ship that needs an escort. Fly close to that ship, and you will be able to (A)utopilot.
- If using (A)utopilot does not solve the problem, you may need to reconfigure your boot disk. This is, basically, the same problem as addressed above. Wing Commander III cannot get enough memory to complete a given function. Try using a boot disk created by the Automatic boot disk maker. If this does not help, use the steps mentioned above to change the CONFIG.SYS file so that BUFFERS=25 instead of the default BUFFERS=99. This will save some memory.
"Error loading *.IFF or *.TRE files"
- If you are using a "shortcut" in Windows 95 to run the game, right-click on the shortcut icon, select 'Properties' and then select 'Program.' Make sure that the "Cmd line:" and the Working: folders are the same. If running exclusively under MS-DOS, delete the *.TRE files from the C:\WC3 directory and re-start.
Why does it take so long to load up a mission?
- There are a variety of reasons behind long load times. Before you try to troubleshoot your particular problem, you need to make sure that you are booting your system with a boot disk or shortcut that is appropriate for the game. Here are some tips to follow:
- Copy the OBJECT, MISSION and GAMEFLOW files to your hard drive. (Install can do this)
- Run a complete SCANDISK and thorough DEFRAG or Norton SPEEDDISK on your system.
- You can add the line "C:\WINDOWS\SMARTDRV 100 C" to your boot disk AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
- Get the most recent CD-ROM device driver for your hardware.
- With the right boot disk, with enough system RAM and a healthy hard drive, Wing Commander III's load times should be significantly decreased.
I'm getting a lockup when the DOTS start appearing on my screen!
- Commonly, lockups during the initial load phase of the game are related to either Sound card configuration or to your mouse driver version. Run the install (D:\WC3 -I) and select NO SOUND for both digital sounds and music. If running the game after NO SOUND is selected gets past the lock and into the game, then you know that you will have to re-configure your sound card since the 'lock' was related to your sound card configuration. See our Sound Card Help Page for more information.
- If changing the sound to NO SOUND does not alleviate the lockup, try using a different mouse driver. Only 100% Microsoft mouse device drivers are compatible with Wing Commander III.
It keeps saying 'please select save game directory' during install or 'trying for 15MB swapfile' when starting!
- There is not enough free, contiguous space on your hard drive for a 20MB swapfile. You will need to make more free space on the drive and run DEFRAG on your hard disk. Once DEFRAG has completed optimizing your hard drive, and you have more than 20MB free, Wing Commander III will be free to run.
After I type 'WC3' to start the game, I get scrolling ASCII characters!
- Try making a boot disk for the game. We recommend using one of the Origin automatic boot disk makers. If this does not solve the problem, you may need to get a different version of your HIMEM.SYS driver. You may also try adding EMM386 and BUFFERS=25 to the CONFIG.SYS file of the boot disk. If this does not work, inspect the CD for scratches, smears or other marks.
The game says "Insert Disk 5," but I only have four disks!
- Although the display looks as if it is asking for disk "5," it is actually asking for disk number three (3). Insert disk "3" when you see this plaque, and the game will continue as normal.
I've tried everything but the game will not work!
- If you have made a shortcut or bootdisk without the aid of the automatic Origin boot disk and shortcut maker programs, you may want to try them. Otherwise, try running the "WC3 -I" install program from a disk other than 1 or 2 (the install program is on each disk). Completely delete the C:\WC3 directory and run the installation from disk 3 or disk 4.
I'm having trouble with my joystick!
- If you're using a Microsoft Sidewinder 3D Pro, make sure that you are running the game in MS-DOS mode and that you have selected 'CH Flightstick Pro' from the in-flight options menu.
- Try deleting the C:\WC3\JOY0.DAT file from the hard drive. Recalibrate when you run WC3.
- If your joystick is a 'Programmable' stick (not a Microsoft, CH Products, nor Thrustmaster) be sure to set it up as a 'Joystick' in the spaceflight options menu.
- Download WC3JOY.EXE and 'patch' the WC3 joystick routine.
- If pulling the joystick to the lower right in the calibration screen yields values greater than 1400,1400 you will be in need of a speed adjustable game card. Usually, joysticks are attached to sound card game-ports that are not speed adjustable. A speed adjustable game card can allow you to set the port speed so that your joystick will calibrate effectively with most software.
I have a sound card from the Magic S20 family, and the game locks up!
- The MagicS20 sound card family includes the MagicS20, Opti930, MAD-16, and ISP-16 products. In order for these cards to work with the game, the file 'SNDINIT' must be run in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file of the boot disk. The line should read : C:\[Sound Card Directory]\SNDINIT /B /C
- This will allow greater compatibility for your sound card with Wing Commander III's sound routines. See our Sound Card Help Page for more information.
I'm getting lockups, or lots of static with my Pro Audio Spectrum 16
- To alleviate the lockup problem, you will need to MANUALLY set your sound card in the Wing Commander III installation program. Check your boot disk CONFIG.SYS file for the line that contains 'MVSOUND.SYS.' Make sure that this line also contains 'd:5' (which will set up your sound card to use DMA 5). See our Sound Card Help Page for more information.
Movies are pausing (starting and stopping)!
- The movies in Wing Commander III can run in both SVGA and VGA. Although they are of lesser overall video resolution quality, the VGA movies run much more smoothly. Try running D:\WC3 -I and setting up the "movies" as VGA. Be sure you are using a boot disk / shortcut appropriate for the game and that you have the most recent CD-ROM drivers for your hardware.
