| RED: | May need to be modified to reflect the wording in your C:\CONFIG.SYS or C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT, respectively. |
| GREEN: | Optional. These are not required to run the game. However you may like to have sound with your game, so leaving these out may not be helpful. |

Ultima VIII : Pagan
Common Issues
"#001"
- This error indicates that your system is not configured to run with only XMS memory. You might have EMM386 loading in your boot configuration's CONFIG.SYS file. To solve the problem, make a boot disk as per the instructions at the top of this page.
"#1910"
- The installation of Ultima VIII did not go smoothly. You will need to delete the Ultima VIII directory and reinstall the game after making a boot disk for the game. If you have already created a boot disk according to the specifications listed above, you will need to boot with that disk before re-installing Ultima VIII.
"Dynamic Memory Allocation error"
- This problem is essentially the same type of problem as "Error #001": your system's configuration is not set up for pure XMS. Create a boot disk for the game using the configuration listed at the top of this page, or use the automatic Origin boot disk maker for XMS.
"Error Loading Command, System halted"
- Although this error message seems rather severe, it is only trying to indicate that your MOUSE driver is not 100% "Microsoft" compatible. Try using a new mouse driver, perhaps a true Microsoft brand mouse driver for your mouse hardware. If your mouse hardware is not made by Microsoft, you may want to contact the manufacturer for the most recent software drivers for it.
"Error 286.333 Program Halted by Code"
- To solve this problem, you will need to reconfigure your boot files to match the ones indicated at the top of this page. We recommend that you delete the Ultima VIII directory from your hard drive and reinstall after booting your system with the appropriate boot disk. See our reccommended boot configuration.
"Gamedat Corrupted"
- Try getting around this error message by typing "RESTART" in the C:\ULTIMA8 directory. Load the saved game that you want to play from and see if you get the error message again. If you continue to get this error message, try starting the game from scratch (not using any of your saves.) If the error appears after starting from scratch, you may need to create a boot disk, delete the ULTIMA VIII directory and re-install the game.
"My game locks up in the Ethereal Plane at the end when I put down the blackrock pieces!"
- From MS-DOS, in the C:\ULTIMA8 directory, type "PATCH GAMEDAT\NPCDATA.DAT 00E9 00 69A." Restart the game and load the saved game that is causing the problem. This should allow you to get past the error message... but it only works on the game that you load immediately after re-starting. If you load more than one saved game after "patching" the problem, you may not be able to get past the error.
"I type U8 to start the game, but all I get is a black screen!"
- This is probably a conflict with your sound card. To find out for certain, run the INSTALL program for Ultima 8 from the C:\ULTIMA8 directory. Select NO sound and NO music card. Save your settings in the Install and then run the game again. If the lockup goes away, you know that you'll need to run the INSTALL program again to set up your sound card properly. See our Sound Card Help Page for more information. Be sure to use the boot disk appropriate for running the game (above).
"When I am watching Lothian being sacrificed, the screen won't quit shaking!"
- Continual shaking of the screen is a problem related to your Sound Card's IRQ setting. Run the INSTALL program from the C:\ULTIMA8 directory. Ensure that the settings are correct. If you know them to be correct, but cannot get past the shaking, set the game for NO sound and NO music. Save the settings for the install progrma and run the game again. Without sound, you should be able to get past this point, save the game again, run the install program and reconfigure your sound for the rest of the game. See our Sound Card Help Page for more information.
"Stratos won't put the Avatar down... or the game locks up near Stratos"
- As unusual as it may seem, this problem is related to your sound card IRQ.
"I've walked into a black area where the Avatar has repeating images following him!"
- You have managed to take your character beyond the extents of the world map. Walk back the way you came... if you can. If you cannot walk back to the world map, you may need to load a saved game to get back into play.
