Notes

MOSLO.EXE
If your game is running too fast, you may need to use the program MOSLO to slow your computer down. Download MOSLO.EXE and copy it to a temporary directory. After typing "MOSLO" from within the temporary directory, the file will expand itself into a text file (documentation) and a MOSLO.COM file (used to slow down your computer). To run MOSLO, type "MOSLO.COM /XX C:\COMMAND.COM" where /XX is the percentage of your processor speed you wish to run (i.e. /50 cuts your processor speed to one-half of its original speed).
Data Disk Setup
Make sure that you select your Hard Drive as the data disk. Strange problems occur when you use floppy disks as the data disks for Ultima I-VI CD-ROM.
Running off the CD-ROM
All of the games will run from the CD-ROM as long as your Hard Drive is set up as the data disk.
Windows '95
If you are using Windows '95 and do not have a complete previous version of MS-DOS on your system, you will need to install the games to your Hard Drive. You will recieve a message that you are missing cetain DOS files (JOIN.EXE, to be precise). The problem is not solvable under Windows 95.
Full Install to Hard Drive
If you want to install one of the Ultima games to your hard drive, you can go to that specific game directory on the CD-ROM and type "XCOPY *.* C:\U?" where "?" is the number of the Ultima game you wish to copy. To copy all SIX games to your hard drive, go to the root directory of the CD-ROM (probably the D:\ prompt) and type "XCOPY *.* C:\ORIGIN\ /E /S" After all files are copied to the hard drive, change to the C:\ORIGIN directory and type "ATTRIB *.* -R /S"
In order for Ultima VI to have music, you'll need to change to the C:\ORIGIN\U6 directory and type "EDIT CONFIG.U6" In the blank, blue edit screen, type "vma388" and then save the file. Exit the editor and then try starting the game.
To run a game, you will need to go into its respective directory (i.e. to run Ultima I, go to the C:\ORIGIN\U1 directory), and then run the executable file within that directory.
Unusual Floppy Install Commands
If you have the floppy versions of Ultima III, Ultima IV or Ultima VI, you will have different installation commands than are used by the CD-ROM version. For Ultima III, insert the PROGRAM DISK and type "MKPLAY A:" For Ultima IV, insert the PROGRAM DISK and type "SETUP" And, for Ultima VI, insert the disk labeled "ENDGAME" into the drive and type "COPYU6 A: C:" This will automatically run the INSTALL program to set up the sound. There is no Sound Blaster support. Select AdLib at address 388 for music. All sound effects come from the PC speaker.
Encore Disk Exchange
For any problems or exchanges with the Encore package of Ultima I - VI, contact Encore at 1-800-507-1375.

Ultima I - VI CD
Common Issues

Error Messages

Divide Overflow on Ultima II
This error message is generated due to a 'speed problem.' Your system is running too fast for Ultima II to accurately calculate its necessary functions. To solve this problem, we recommend using MOSLO to slow down your system to at least 50% of its original speed. If the game is unplayable at this speed, or is continuing to generate the error message, you may want to take it down to 25% (or even less) of its original speed.
"No JOIN.EXE, SUBST.EXE or APPEND.EXE files" "Insert DOS data disk"
To solve this problem, you will need to type "DELTREE C:\ORIGIN" from your C:\ root directory. Create a JOIN.EXE file on your hard drive by typing "DIR > JOIN.EXE" Create a boot disk according to the instructions at the top of this page. Restart your system with the boot disk and re-install the game.
"Packed File Corrupt" (Floppy version Only)
Solve this problem by typing the word "LOADFIX" in front of the game executable. Example: This error appears when trying to run ULTIMA6. Instead of just typing "ULTIMA6" to run the game, you'll type "LOADFIX ULTIMA6"

General

"I can't save my characters!"
"My game locks up at a black screen with a blinking cursor!"
This lockup can indicate a problem with the existing SUBST or APPEND files on your system. Go to the DOS directory and type APPEND and then SUBST. If your system 'hangs' when trying to execute either of these files, you will need to reinstall the upgraded version of DOS (version 6.0 or later). If you receive the error message "Incorrect DOS version" you will need to check the version of SUBST and APPEND on your system. Run SETVER from the command prompt. If you see APPEND or SUBST in the "Setver list" you will need to remove them. To remove SUBST type "SETVER SUBST.EXE /D" and to remove APPEND, type "SETVER APPEND.EXE /D" Restart your computer. Delete the C:\ORIGIN directory and attempt to reinstall the games.
"I have Ultima IV (floppy version) and it says it has a bad sector on the disk."
This is related to the copy protection for Ultima IV. Make a data disk by running the INSTALL program, and the problem should be fixed.

CD-ROM

"I'm getting CDR-101 trouble reading CD-ROM drive message! (Encore disk only)"
Make a boot disk as per the instructions listed at the top of this page. Re-start your system with the boot disk and try running the installation program again. If you are unable to get past the CD-ROM error messages, you will need to contact the disk vendor (ENCORE) for a replacement.

Video

"My screen starts in EGA but then goes black and white!"
Certain video cards have this effect, especially the Cirrus Logic family of video cards. The only solution is to run the game in CGA mode (by saying "no" to 16 color VGA in the install program). For Ultima I, type "ULTIMA C" to force CGA mode.
