| BLACK: | Must use the exact lettering provided. |
| RED: | May need to be modified to reflect the wording in your C:\CONFIG.SYS or C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT, respectively. |
| GREEN: | Optional. These are not required to run the game. However you may like to have sound with your game, so leaving these out may not be helpful. |

Privateer
Common Issues
"1303-FFFF" or any message ending in FFFF"
- Try making a boot disk to run the game. After you have made the boot disk, run the game and see if the error appears again. If you have created the boot disk to the necessary specifications but continue to get the error message, you may need to delete the C:\PRIVATER directory and reinstall the game. Be sure to reboot your system with the boot disk prior to reinstallation.
"Error #1910"
- Solving this error message requires that you make a boot disk. Create the boot disk as per the instructions for the game. Restart your system with the boot disk and then try to run the game again. If you get the same error message, you must "EDIT" the A:\CONFIG.SYS file. Change the line FILES=25 to FILES=40 (if your FILES are less than 25, raise them to 25). Change the line BUFFERS=25 to BUFFERS=40 (if your BUFFERS are less than 25, raise them to 25). Reboot with the boot disk and try running the game again.
"80E8-FFFF"
- If you already have 2 guns on a Galaxy ship and bought a bottom turret first, the game will crash to DOS. To get past this error message, make sure that you purchase a turret for the TOP of your ship first!
"Can't find C:\PRIVATER" when installing Righteous Fire."
- Do not try to install the FLOPPY version of Righteous Fire over the CD-ROM installation of Privateer. The CD-ROM version of Privateer automatically installs Righteous Fire to your hard drive. You do not need to install any Floppy components to the CD-ROM installation.
"D002-FFFF" when starting the game (floppy version only).
- This error message indicates that there is a problem with your sound card configuration. Run the INSTALL program again and select NO sound and NO music. Run the game again and see if you can get past the error message. If you can get past the error message with Sound and Music turned OFF, then you will need to run the install program again to set your sound up a second time. Be sure to know the proper address, IRQ and DMA values for your sound card before you install the game again. Incorrect IRQ values can cause this error message as well. See our Sound Card Help Page for more information.
"EA01-FFFF"
- The normal boot disk configuration for Privateer may not be working in this case. Edit the A:\CONFIG.SYS file for your boot disk. Remove the line relating to EMM386.EXE (put "REM" in front of the line or remove the entire line from the CONFIG.SYS file). Restart your computer with the new boot disk and try running the game again.
"JPYI"
- This error message indicates a problem with your joystick configuration. From the C:\PRIVATER directory, type "DEL JOYA.DAT." Run the game again. If the error message persists, you may need to delete the C:\PRIVATER directory and reinstall the game.
The game asks for joystick calibration... but I don't have a joystick!
- Due to the way your hardware has been configured, Privateer mistakenly believes that you do have a joystick. In MS-DOS, go to the C:\PRIVATER directory and type "DIR > JOYA.DAT" Try running the game again. Set up your configuration to fly without a joystick (keyboard / mouse). If you end up buying a joystick for your computer system, you'll need to delete the JOYA.DAT file by typing "DEL JOYA.DAT" from the C:\PRIVATER directory.
"The game asks for a SECOND joystick, but I don't have one!"
- From the C:\PRIVATER prompt, type "COPY JOYA.DAT JOYB.DAT" This will copy the data file to the 'second' joystick and allow you to continue the running the game.
"When flying with the mouse or keyboard, I get stuck going in one direction!"
- Unfortunately, Privateer requires a joystick to run properly. The frame rate is balanced for joystick input and therefore, a joystick is highly recommended for play. Check the "typematic-rate setting" in your system's BIOS. It is likely that your keyboard "buffer" is over-flowing. Try 'tapping' the keys on the keyboard instead of holding them down.
"I'm continually getting 'Bad Calibration Data' when trying to calibrate my joystick!"
- It is very likely that you will need a speed adjustable game card. Due to the speed of your system hardware, the routine within Privateer that detects the position of your joystick may be getting erroneous data. Try making a fake JOYA.DAT file by typing "DIR > JOYA.DAT" in the C:\PRIVATER directory. If this does not allow you to eventually calibrate your joystick hardware, you will need to install a "Speed Adjustable Game card" that will allow you to control the speed of the joystick port attached to your computer. Once this card is in your machine, you can change the speed at which it operates so that it can calibrate within Privateer.
"CDR-101"
- The number of CD-ROM "buffers" may not be set properly. Edit the AUTOEXEC.BAT file and look for the line containing MSCDEX.EXE. There should be a "/M:" switch somewhere on the line. Set /M: to values of 5, 10, 15 and 20 (i.e. LH C:\DOS\MSCDEX.EXE /D:MSCD001 /M:20). Also, run the "DIR /S" command from the root directory of the CD-ROM (usually D:\ or E:\) before running the game.
