Crusader: No Remorse
Common Issues
"Can't get a 300K sound fragment. Halted File MEMORY\PROTMEM.C, line 1527"
- XMS amount is too low. Increase the amount of Extended memory available. See Boot Configuration.
"Fatal Error 286.2250 - Load Program Failed - Bad.EXE file. - C:\CRUSADER\CRUSADER.EXE"
- You are running HIMEM.SYS from \DOS and EMM386.EXE from \WINDOWS (Win95 version). Point both memory managers to the same directory. See the Boot Configuration for more information.
"Fatal Error 286.3330 - "
- Boot Configuration problem. See the Boot Configuration for more information.
"Fragment 0 below minimum size. Try the '-x 38' option. Halted file MEMORY\CPROTMEM.C, line 1417"

"Halted File: CRUSYS.C, line 266. You need to have at least 15 Megabytes of free Hard drive space." or
"Halted file CRUSYS.C, line 258. You need to have at least 5 Megs of free hard drive space."- Not enough hard drive space to create the files for the saved games. There needs to be at least 15 MB free under the Minimum and Partial installations, and at least 5 MB free under the full installation. NOTE: As a general rule of thumb, you should keep at least 2MB free on your hard drive at all times.
"Halted File: Kernel.C, line 1844"
- NEC triple spin (x3) CD-ROMs (Models 500 and 510) have problems such as lockups and stuttering while playing the movies.
- To work around this, press the Esc key to bypass the movies altogether.
- Try a Partial install. You must also turn off flics in the CRUSADER.CFG file.
"Halted File: MEMORY\CPROTMEM.C, link 1322"
- Not enough conventional memory free. See the Boot Configuration for more information.
"SCRIPT.C "
- You are trying to install or run the game through Win95. You must go to DOS. mode to work. See the Boot Configuration to make a Shortcut or Boot Disk.
"Unable to create destination directory. Please verify your setup."
- Trying to install to a directory, such as C:\GAMES\CRUSADER, and the 'GAMES' directory has not been created yet. Create it first.
If I roll on some teleports, they teleport me back and forth in an endless loop, lock up, kick me to DOS, or other weird things.
- Download the patch
- The only way to get out of it is to reload a save game or exit out of the game.
The gun only shoots one shot and then stops firing.
- You are probably using QEMM (Quarterdeck Extended Memory Manager). If you are, make a Boot Disk or Shortcut and remove it. See the Boot Configuration for more information.
- Make sure you are using a 100% compatible Microsoft mouse driver.
The system locks at a black screen after trying to run the game.
- Usually occurrs when HIMEM.SYS is not loaded. See the Boot Configuration for more information.

My mouse will only move in the upper left quarter of the screen.
- You need either a Microsoft, Logitech, or 100% compatible mouse driver. You can run Crusader without a mouse.
I heard that this game supported a joystick and the Gamepad, but I get an option in the game for it.
- There is only support for these on versions 1.10 and 1.21 (patched). Check the version by hitting ctrl-v. If you do not have one of these versions download the patch. If you do have one of these versions, run: C:\CRUSADER\INSTALL.EXE from the C:\CRUSADER directory, then select the control device.
Sound skips in the intro.
- This happens in the title screen, unfortunately nothing can be done. This happens on all but the highest end machines. If it happens in the movies, it may be due to machine or CD-ROM speed.
There is no sound or music in the game or, the game will play sound for a few seconds, then stop, but gameplay continues.
- Incorrect I/O address selected for your Sound Card. Change the I/O setting to your specific Sound Hardware. See our Sound Card Help Page for more information.
I got the CRUSND.EXE patch, and I'm still not getting sound.
- Be sure to run the install to reset up the sound. When setting up the Ensoniq, be sure to use the native Ensoniq addresses, not the Sound Blaster emulation ones. See our Sound Card Help Page for more information.
I get a number of random errors when Crusader is installing or playing.
- Update CD-ROM drivers. These problems are very prevalent with TEAC x4 (CD-55A) driver version 1.09. Version 1.18k seemed to solve all the problems.
Video is not playing at all. Sometimes the video would stop playing.
- If this happens, try reinstalling. You can copy the save games out to a temp directory and then back after you reinstall.
Why can't I open a door using the correct keycard when the alarm is on?
- You must turn off the alarm by using a wall alarm switch (glowing red box) and then you can use the keycard or keypad.
How do I control the Spider Bombs?
- When you use a Spider Bomb, the Crusader will kneel and release it. From this point, rotate the Crusader left or right to turn the Spider Bomb in the corresponding direction. It will move forward on its own. NOTE: If the CAPS LOCK or SHIFT key is down, the Crusader will rotate faster as will the Spider Bomb.
I finished the game on level 7 because the credits are rolling, where is the endgame?
- On level 7, you are setting a fusion pack to blow up a nerve gas center. Once you set the pack, you need to get to a transporter pad and get out quickly, because a countdown has started. The beeping gets louder as the explosion approaches. The credits are rolling because you died in the explosion.
The Silencer has walked off the screen and I can barely see him.
- Press Z to center the screen on the Silencer.
I can't open the control area at the beginning of Mission 2.
