Notes

Smartdrive
The following sizes are recommended for smartdrive caching:
8 MB RAM…………… 256K (if possible, 128K if not)
16 MB RAM………….. 1024K
Keep in mind that 7104K XMS must be available in order to run Longbow reliably.
UNIVBE
Longbow CD does NOT include UNIVBE v5.1a, which may be necessary for VESA 2.0 video compliance. For more detailed information on UNIVBE please refer to the UNIVBE (Scitech Display Doctor) web site at www.scitechsoft.com.
Installation
The installation program performs several diagnostic routines when first run. It will only display results that fall below 0200, (which indicates poor performance). In order to display all of these results use D:\INSTALL.EXE /T.
The installation sizes are labeled according to detail levels. If the you want to run the game with medium detail, you must install the game using these options. However, even with low detail, the larger installation sizes will improve the games overall performance.
Windows 95
In order to run Longbow in Windows '95, you must have at least 16 Mb RAM and FILES and BUFFERS set to at least 45 each in the CONFIG.SYS. See Boot Configuration for more information. It is strongly recommended to run the game under MS-DOS instead.
Screen Saver
If you are having problems with the Screen Saver, please call (703)683-3700 ext. 204 for support, 9am-5pm EST.

Jane's AH-64D Longbow
Common Issues

Error Messages

"DOS/4GW error…"
  1. This is a memory error. A Boot Disk or Shortcut will most likely correct this. See Boot Configuration for more information.
  2. Try using UNIVBE. Sometimes 5.0 works, but 5.1 is recommended. Version 5.2 will also work if you use the -R switch.

General

How often are the terrain maps decompressed?
Any time you go from one theater of operation to another, or progress to certain areas in the campaign, a map will be decompressed.
I've tried EVERYTHING else and the game still doesn't work. What can I do?
  1. Add DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE (no switches at all) to the CONFIG.SYS and then try to run the game again.
  2. If 1. does not work, try removing the HIMEM.SYS line from the CONFIG.SYS and run the game again.
  3. On 8 Mb machines, set DOS=LOW.
I have used cheat codes and I keep getting random error messages and gameplay is erratic.
Cheat codes may corrupt the game. You may have to completely delete and reinstall the game to solve this.

Sound

Why is my speech and sound effects in flight all messed up after I did ALT-J to calibrate my joystick?
Calibrate using ALT-O while in flight instead of ALT-J.
I am getting a popping sound with my Ensoniq Soundscape Sound Card.
Ensoniq Soundscapes give a slight popping sound in Sound Blaster emulation mode. Set up the sound in native Soundscape mode and it should work fine. See our Sound Card Help Page for more information.
The movies have a sound popping effect.
While running the game under Windows 95 the sound may pop. The only way to fix this is to run the game under DOS. This is a DOS native game. To fix this you may also copy the MOVIES1.TRE from CD1 to the game directory by typing from a DOS prompt COPY D:\MOVIES1.TRE C:\JANES\LONGBOW\MOVIES1.TRE. This file is 185mb in size.
The sound is garbled in the movies and in flight.
If you are running the game under Windows 95, the only solution is to run the game under DOS. This is a DOS native game. Make a shortcut or boot disk using the Boot Configuration.

Video

How do I improve my frame rate?
Try removing sky texturing, shadows, and detailed helicopters from the "Flight Options" menu. Hit ALT-O while in-flight to get to this menu. You can also try turning off dithering and lowering the mesh detail and far clipping range. Using UNIVBE 5.1 VESA driver may also help speed up the frame rate.
Longbow frame rate is slow with or without UNIVBE 5.1 or 5.2.
A number of video cards were tested on this game and it was found that ANY Cirrus Logic video chipset card will run Longbow slower than other chipsets. VESA 2.0 compliance does help a little, but the same comparable card without Cirrus Logic still runs Longbow faster. Some cards that have this chipset are the #9 Imagine 128 and P Pros. Try installing using the largest install option (3), loading Smartdrive, and making a clean Boot Disk or Shortcut. See Boot Configuration for more information.
I have UNIVBE 5.2 and I'm still having problems.
Make sure that you are using the -R switch to load UNIVBE by typing UNIVBE -R. This works most of the time.
The movies are very pixelated.
Unfortunately, there is nothing that can be done about this.

CD-ROM

Occasionally my game gives me a CD-ROM read error while I'm in Windows 95.
Check your Boot Disk or Shortcut to see that you are using the proper Boot Configuration for the game.
I keep getting CD-ROM hits and hard drive hits that really slow down game play.
If you are using a Future Domain SCSI controller card, there is no fix for this. Future Domain was bought by Adaptec and they are not supporting these cards other than troubleshooting installation problems. They do not intend to upgrade the software for these cards.

Controller

The joystick will not center when calibrating.
Increase the Dead Zone ("+" and "-" keys in the calibration screen), this is a common problem while running under Windows 95 or running the game on a fast machine with out a speed adjustable game card. See page F4 for info relating to input device problems.
My Microsoft Sidewinder 3D Pro won't calibrate correctly.
  1. Make sure that the switch is in the "one dot" position, and set it up as a Flightstick Pro.
  2. Try increasing the joystick's dead spot to 25. This is done in the calibration screen by pressing the "+" key.
I can't program various keys to my input device.
Using Programmable Thrustmaster equipment (TQS, WCS, FLCS) can be difficult programming special function keys (such as Insert, Delete, Home, Page Up, etc.). You must use RAW codes to program these keys. Refer to Thrustmaster for more information.

Gameplay

I can't win the first four campaign missions… in fact, I keep getting a court- marshal.
The first four campaign missions are reconnaissance missions only. If you destroy any enemy units in these missions, you will be court marshaled. The point of these missions is to go completely undetected.
No matter what I do on this mission, I die in a nuclear explosion.
This happens if you lose too many missions. If you manage to reach this mission, your pilot will be killed in a nuclear explosion. It is the losing endgame, and it's kind of cool to watch. You must start over and win more missions next time.
I never get medals or promotions.
If you use either Invulnerability or Unlimited Ammunition, you will get points in the debriefing screen, but these will not count toward medals or promotions.
The Autopilot won't fly below 100 ft
The autopilot will never fly below 100 ft or above 500 ft. It will also never travel at less than 65 knots or more than 135 knots. These are limited by design to avoid terrain, not structures.
I keep getting shot down.
Flying a helicopter is not like flying an airplane. In order to survive fly low and slow. Try and stay below 50ft or you will risk being engaged. If you can stay at about 20-30 ft, you will be able to destroy most threats before they even know you're there.
The game said I got a medal and attended the CIS surrender, but I received no medal.
You have lost the last mission in the campaign (CAMP029). If you win this mission, they will get the Baltic Hammer Service Ribbon. Otherwise, you won't. Either way, you still have won the game.
