Perry Naval Base was a Confederation Halsey-Class Naval Base located in the Perry system, Clarke Quadrant, Gemini Sector.

Perry was the military center of Gemini, located two jumps away from each of the "Blockade Point" systems and no further than three jumps from territory held by the Kilrathi Empire. Because of the strength of the military forces in the area, there were no large scale battles in the Terran-Kilrathi War fought in Gemini between 2658 and the end of the war. Most of Gemini's naval were based out of Perry during the latter half of the 27th Century. As might be expected, the system itself was heavily patrolled by Confederation military forces, a fact that made it one of the few systems in Gemini that the Church of Man and local pirate clans went out of their way to steer clear of during the period. Perry was a model of efficiency and was supported by a lively business in all industries. In particular the base was noteworthy for the sale of out-of-date weaponry; many gun-runners in the area got their start from sales at Perry, bringing in food, medical supplies and the like to the base in exchange. In the late 2660s, the base was commanded by Admiral David Terrell.

This Naval Base, along with 18 other Halsey-Class Naval Bases, was destroyed during the Nephilim War. The destruction of this base in particular set a chain of events in motion that led to the near-complete de-population of Gemini Sector by the end of the 27th Century, though it has since recovered.
The Midway-class was a class of Confederation capital ship which first entered service in 2681 and saw service in the Nephilim war. A 'megacarrier' designed to serve as both a launching platform for more than two hundred fighters and as a mobile starbase, they were envisioned to replace almost every ship in a traditional carrier battle group with one vessel. A total of ten ships were completed between 2681 and 2686. By the end of the war, four of the ships had been lost, with a fifth so badly damaged that she was salvaged as a refugee base.

Class Overview
The Midway-class represented a shift in the direction of carrier design undertaken by the Confederation towards the end of the 27th century. Still reeling from the massive financial cost of the Kilrathi War, the Confederation Navy realized that it could not afford to keep fielding large carrier battle groups. However, the need for force projection and the ability to interdict pirates and Kilrathi raiders still existed. Midway was designed to contain all the necessary aspects of a battle group within one hull. More of a mobile star base than a simple carrier, the class possesses its own research and development, intelligence and supply divisions, combining roles normally filled by specialist ships. One of the key purposes of the Midway design was the ability to operate unsupported in enemy territory, a feature that is shared with the Kilrathi war era Bengal-class. One of the biggest advocates of the class was Commodore Christopher Blair, who helped design the ship with the knowledge gained from his experiences in the Kilrathi War.

Design and Construction
Midway was laid down at the TSY Arcology circa 2676. Her features were designed around an ability to be able to operate behind enemy lines for extended periods without resupply or assistance from other vessels. Her launch and landing bays are decentralized, ensuring that a single torpedo hit cannot disable or destroy her ability to launch fighters, a problem that plagued many Confederation carriers during the war. Her hull is split down the middle from the bow to the bridge tower, creating a distinct flat profile with two 'wings'. The separation of these hull components limits the possible spread of damage, allowing one wing to continue operating even if the other has taken hits.

Unlike the preceding Vesuvius-class, the Midway-class is not designed with heavy energy armament. She is equipped with six capital-ship missile launchers, allowing a stand-off capacity against enemy warships should they enter range. With 25 dual mount laser turrets, six dual mount ion turrets and six IFF missile launchers, the class also possesses a formidable anti-fighter armament. Her armor, while still heavy, is significantly thinner than that seen on the Vesuvius-class, allowing more usable space for the ship's science and support facilities. Similarly, her engines are less powerful. The ship mounts six forward facing launch tubes and two landing bays. Midway has the facilities to field a wing of 252 spacecraft, though early ships often sortied with fewer fighters than they were capable of carrying.

The class is also designed to be adaptable to its environment. Many components are removable, allowing much shorter refit times than a conventional fleet carrier. Her facilities were designed with upgrades in mind, so that the ship could be continually updated to meet new threats. One of the best examples of this adaptability was seen when TCS Midway mounted a captured Nephilim ship killing device to its hull for use against an enemy fleet in 2681.

Service History
Midway entered service in 2681 and was deployed to the territories of the former Kilrathi empire to combat piracy and aggressive Kilrathi raiders. When the Nephilim incursion occurred in the Kilrah system, Midway was instrumental in defeating the initial Nephilim push, giving the Confederation enough time to mobilize its forces for the coming war. The carrier was able to sustain operations behind the lines for an extended period, showcasing the best traits of Midways 'all in one' design. Her sister ship, the Mistral Sea, entered service shortly thereafter. The final ship of the class, TCS Port Broughton, was commissioned in 2686.

The class grew to a total of ten ships, all of which saw service during the Nephilim war. They distinguished themselves in combat, though at a heavy price. Mistral Sea and Jutland were destroyed at some point during the conflict, while Bataan is still listed as missing in action. Also missing is TCS Tripoli, which never returned from her patrol and is assumed lost. Port Broughton was scuttled in 2694 after fighting a delaying action to allow Confederation relief forces to arrive and defend Firekka. Salvaged by local militia, as of 2701 she is a home for thousands of displaced refugees, her combat capabilities removed.
During the Vega Sector Campaign, the TCS Tiger's Claw participated in several missions in the system as part of a large Terran Confederation offensive. These missions included:
*The siege of the Kilrathi planet Kurasawa IV.
*The assault on several Kilrathi transports including one Command Staff Ship.
*The escort and defense of a captured Ralari-class Destroyer.
*The escort and defense of the TCS Formidable.
The TCS Kipling was the second Bengal-Class Strike Carrier. The Kipling was built by the Trojan Four Spaceyards and launched in 2645. Because of design modifications the Kipling was ten meters shorter and several tonnes less massive than the earlier TCS Tiger's Claw.

Fan additions
The TCS Kipling appears in Wing Commander: Standoff, which is based on the novel Fleet Action, in Episode 5. There she was in the Sol System in the process of being decomissioned. When the Kilrathi broke the Armistice in 2668, the Confederation wasn't able to reactivate her in time for the Battle of Earth. However, her complement of Rapier IIs were transferred over to the Wake-Class Escort Carrier CVE TCS Firekka.

The TCS Kipling is also the homebase of the Player in Wing Commander: Unknown Enemy, which takes place during Wing Commander: Prophecy. There she was sold to the Union of Border Worlds and renamed into BWS Dauntless. She was meant to be decomissioned and her fighter wings to be transferred over to the BWS Intrepid in the Kurasawa System, however the former one was destroyed by the Nephilim and after their Invasion in that System was stopped by the combined efforts of the BWS Dauntless, the KIS Zu'Baka (a Fralthi-class Cruiser) and the TCS Eisen, the Decision for Decomission was revoked.

The BWS Intrepid (CV-06) was a Durango-Class Heavy Destroyer in the service of the Union of Border Worlds, and served as the flagship of the Outer Worlds Fleet.

She was nicknamed the Evil I.

Terran Service
The BWS Intrepid was originally the TCS Delphi, during which she was an ordinary heavy destroyer in the service of the Terran Confederation during the Terran-Kilrathi War. At some point, she was reconfigured by the Border Worlds Militia to serve as a light carrier. She was subsequently rechristened as the Intrepid.

Border Worlds Conflict
The Intrepid had a prominent role to play during the volatile Border Worlds Conflict of 2673. Early in the crisis, her captain was Raul Dominguez, a veteran of the Terran-Kilrathi War. By this point in time, the Intrepid hosted wings which were captained by several prominent Terran war veterans who had grown sympathetic to the Union's cause.

During the crisis, a number of Confederation officers from the TCS Lexington, among them Colonel Christopher Blair and Captain William Eisen, defected to the Border Worlds. They suspected that illegal combatants from within the Confederation had been instigating the conflict. The Intrepid was informed of their defection and arrived in the Masa System to collect them, but was pursued by the TCS Achilles, which fired a pair of torpedoes at the vessel. The hull around the crew quarters and bridge were breached, killing two-thirds of the crew, including Captain Dominguez.

The Intrepid survived the attack and command of the vessel was accepted by Captain Eisen. After the devastating attack, a replacement bridge and Combat Information Center were installed in the Auxiliary Control Room. Command later passed on to Colonel Blair when Eisen decided to pursue an internal investigation into the Confederation's military activities. Accommodations were primitive, as the crew had to use what little space was available as makeshift sleeping quarters. However, the vessel, despite its age and technological inferiority, served her purpose well and fought in many major engagements. She hampered enemy activities across the Border Worlds and intervened in the civil war in the Circe System. She was the first ship to respond to the disaster on Telamon.

When Colonel Blair discovered that a faction known as the Black Lance was responsible for the conflict, the Intrepid travelled at all speed to Earth in an effort to dissuade the Confederation from declaring war on the Border Worlds. She was pursued by the TCS Vesuvius but was rescued by the TCS Mount St. Helens, commandeered by Captain Eisen and his allies. The Intrepid managed to reach the Sol System and allowed Blair to expose the conspiracy to the Terran government, preventing a war.

After the conflict's resolution, the Intrepid was refitted as a training ship for potential pilots with the Terran Confederation, and stationed in the Sol System.
Apocrypha
In the fan-made Secret Ops modification Wing Commander: Unknown Enemy, the Intrepid participates in the defense of the Border Worlds against Nephilim invaders at the beginning of the conflict in 2681. The carrier BWS Dauntless (formerly the TCS Kipling), which was about to be decommissioned before the conflict began, was preparing to transfer her remaining fighters to the Intrepid when she was destroyed.

Torgo is a star system in the Epsilon Sector, and one of the major military strongholds of the Terran Confederation. It is known to the Kilrathi as "Ko'bar Yagar".

Torgo is located near the Terran-Kilrathi border, and is a vital asset to the Terrans in the ongoing Terran-Kilrathi War. Torgo was the center for dozens of major military operations and vessels across the Terran Confederation, and it hosted a jump point that led directly to Kilrah. It hosted the Epsilon Sector Command. The holding of this system was vital to Terran security. It is unknown what its civilian population was.

Torgo saw extensive action throughout the War, but came to the spotlight in 2669 when Admiral Geoffrey Tolwyn unveiled the TCS Behemoth, a super capital ship designed to destroy entire planets, namely Kilrah. The vessel was to be escorted to Kilrah where it would destroy the Kilrathi homeworld and end the War. The vessel may or may not have been constructed entirely within the system, but it was here that its service began.

The Behemoth was to be escorted by the TCS Victory and her task force, seeing as Colonel Christopher Blair was serving with this fleet. The task force joined Tolwyn and the Behemoth at Torgo, where they defended the massive vessel from Kilrathi attack. The Behemoth was then deployed for its first major test in the Loki System.

Torgo was captured by the Kilrathi during the final days of the War, and they still occupy parts of the system. Torgo's Sector HQ became the scene of the historical signing of the Treaty of Torgo on 2669.275, which officially ended the Terran-Kilrathi War following the destruction of Kilrah. It is unknown what has become of the Terran and Kilrathi forces within the system since then.

Sometime between 2669 and 2681, Torgo became part of the Union of Border Worlds.
Description
Wing Commander Prophecy pushed the cutting edge of technology with 3D acelerator cards. The game was designed for the 3dfx Glide technology which is no longer prominent, its use of 3d hardware makes it stand out in the graphics department many years after its release. The cinematic storyline focuses on young Lieutenant Lance Casey aboard the newly commissioned TCS Midway. Commodore Blair is overseeing the ship's maiden voyage when strange signals are detected from the Kilrah System. An alien fleet is pouring out of an artificial jump gate and seems to be fulfilling a Kilrathi prophecy about the end of the universe. Casey and company must halt the invasion force and learn more about their enemy to counter future incursions.
Description
Wing Commander: Secret Ops is an unprecedented episodic game release available exclusively over the internet.
Secret Ops is a stand alone space combat action game with 56 new single player missions split into seven downloadable episodes. A new Secret Ops episode, consisting of 6-8 missions, will be posted on the Wing Commander Secret Ops web site each week beginning later this summer. On the days leading up to each episode, new fictional experiences will be posted from the Secret Ops story which sets the stage for the upcoming downloadable episode. Over a 7 week period, a new episode of missions will be available for download on each Thursday.
The actual game incorporates a new story, new weapons and more intense battle scenarios than ever before. The Secret Ops story is a continuation of Wing Commander: Prophecy, released late last year. It introduces the Cerberus, a quick-strike cruiser and many other surprises. Players will be propelled through the story via all new cinematic scenes rendered on-the-fly in full 3D, plus gripping new in-flight coms. Game play will include new, enhanced weapons and multi-stage capital ship strike missions. The game universe is packed with unique environments including dense asteroids fields, new Confed star bases and remote stations to explore. There are even cameos from past Wing Commander ships.
And by the way, you can experience this unprecedented gaming event for FREE*.
* (except for standard Internet connection charges).

STORY:
Wing Commander: Secret Ops is set in the aftermath of the alien war that took place in Wing Commander: Prophecy. The super-carrier Midway's very best pilots are assigned to escort the Confederation's first "quick strike" assault cruiser: Cerberus. The Terran Confederation Intelligence Service (TCIS) has slated Cerberus for 'deep cover' duty in foreign systems. Her specific capabilities remain TOP SECRET.
But, to the Ace pilots from Midway, it is no secret that unrest is brewing in Sol and Vega sectors, that Kilrathi space (now littered with Alien debris) is a hotbed of looting and that the real WAR has just begun.

Fan Made Games
There are two notable Full length games fans have made off the Vision engine. Unknown Enemy in 2002 and Standoff in 2010

Unknown Enemy (2002) doesn't have all the video cutscenes and impressive graphical improvements that Standoff features, but the game did pioneer much of the underlying modding techniques. The game takes place during the Prophecy timeframe in the Border Worlds. Many familiar ships play central roles as the crew of the BWS Dauntless finds itself in the midst of the Nephilim invasion. Cockpit voiceovers augment over one hundred pages of in-game fiction to detail the story. Their FAQ details a bit more of the foundation and potential issues some players may face. Once you grab the Secret Ops starter pack, you can download the 74 megabyte Unknown Enemy pack here. Check out their download area for an additional patch and a number of neat bonuses for the game. And finally for all the programmers out there, the UE source code is also available.

Standoff (2010) brings new content to Secret Ops. The branching storyline is based on events from the novel Fleet Action, and the graphics, audio, and gameplay attempt to recreate a WC2-like setting. The game features over fifty missions of various types in a branching campaign, ten simulator missions, in-game cutscenes and fiction to develop the story between missions, more than 50 ship designs from the classic games and an online scoreboard that records your simulator mission scores.
History
The P-64 Ferret was a patrol fighter that served throughout the Terran-Kilrathi War. Ferrets were actually part of the first official encounter between Terran and Kilrathi forces in 2629. The TCS Iason had two towed Ferrets that were lost when the Kilrathi destroyed the vessel. Throughout the war, Ferrets served in the role of patrol craft. Joan's Fighting Spacecraft - 2664.128 UPDATE provided stats for the P-64C Ferret. The C model was lacking in a second VDU, missiles or ITTS. It was, however, then the fastest ship in the fleet. Faster models of the F-27 Arrow V, F-97 Wraith, and F-71 Stiletto, as well as others, surpassed the Ferret's speed record in the years before the war ended.

In 2664, the P-64D Super Ferret was introduced. Featuring new control systems, and heat-seeking missiles, greatly improved the combat efficiency of the Ferret.
* Inquiry Into the Loss of the Odysseus-Class Naval Exploratory Vessel CS Iason Reg E-1456
** "1 long-range Pelican-class shttle refitted for research, 1 standard Tern-class shuttle, 2 towed Ferret-class scout fighters with enhanced sensor arrays, 19 lifeboats."
** "At 0715 hours both Ferrets were scrambled. One, piloted by Captain F. Izmuti, was ordered to begin a pattern of concentrated fly-bys of the Kilrathi ships, while the other, piloted by Commander J. Taggart, was ordered to commence long- and medium-range scans of the area."
** "At 0743 hours, on an approach within 2 kilometers of the Kilrathi ships, one of the Kilrathi opened fire on Capt. Izmuti's Ferret, damaging the right wing array, including cameras and stabilizers. She was ordered to return to the Iason. Commander Taggart remained in space apparently until after after the Iason was destroyed. His precise fate is unknown."
* INQUIRY INTO THE CAPTURE AND SUBSEQUENT ESCAPE AND RETURN OF COMMANDER TAGGART
** "There were only four pilots, and two Ferrets. We spent most of our time in the shuttles, ferrying the scientists around. The Ferrets had stripped-down armament and hyped-up sensors . . . really flying cameras more than anything else. Solar patrols are fully loaded with escort fighters, but not the explorers...of course, they had no way of knowing we'd meet anything alive that wasn't single-celled and growing on a rock."
** "...the captain was good about keeping us informed about events. Every fifteen minutes we'd get an info-byte about what was happening. After about an hour, Farrah Izmuti and I were ordered out. If the Ferrets had been sent out when it first happened, I'd have still been off-duty, but I went on the clock at 0700, and we went out at 715. We were laughing at the guys who had just clocked out..."
** "Impact didn't destroy my Ferret, but it completely drained my shields and damaged my repair array. The first thing I did when I saw that the Iason had been destroyed was hit the self-destruct. You know, it wasn't that difficult a decision. I always expected it would be hard to make myself do it, but it seemed like a really good idea. I slapped it like a bug, and when it didn't work, I hit it again. I really got angry that all systems were down. Totally down. The only thing I can think of is that some shrapnel must have punched through my shields, past my armor and actually opened both of my power supplies."
** "(The Ferret has one less display than other ships.)"
** "Note: The Ferret is the most primitive patrol fighter in the simulator and has no left VDU in its cockpit."
** "Note: The center VDU in the Ferret functions as the right VDU."
* Improved Targeting and Tracking System (ITTS)
** "The Ferret and Rapier are not equipped with ITTS."
* Spacecraft of the Terran and Kilrathi Fleets
** Epee
*** "The design of the Epee is very similar to that of the Ferret. It also demonstrates excellent acceleration and velocity, and maneuvers even better than the Ferret."
** Ferret
*** "The Ferret is the fastest light fighter in the Confederation fleet. Only the Wraith, a Confederation ship model currently in development, will be able to fly at higher velocities than this basic fighter. The Ferret has very simple cockpit features, e.g., only one VDU, and it's the ship most graduating rookie pilots will be first assigned to. The Ferret demonstrates good acceleration and maneuverability, but it is only equipped with mass drivers and has very weak shields and armor. It is not equipped to perform rescue-and-retrieve missions or to attack capital ships."
** Sartha
*** "The Kilrathi Sartha is a light fighter comparable to the Confederation's Epee. The Kilrathi fighter is slower and not as maneuverable as the Ferret or the Epee."
* Chapter 1
** "He cleared the energy field airlock and felt the slowing resistance of air on his wings. There was barely thirty meters of maneuver room inside the hangar and the deck was packed. To his port side was a squadron of F-54C Rapiers."
** " "Doomsday will be squadron commander for the Sabre fighter bombers, Starlight will be in charge of the recon and patrol Ferrets. I'm taking personal charge of the Rapier squadron. Are there any questions?" "
* Chapter 2
** "One after the other the ships went out, after the sixth recon the first three Rapier fighters, and then the second six recon Ferrets. Next went six more Rapier fighters to form the close-in combat air patrol, and by this time nearly a half hour had passed, exacerbated by the abort of two launches, one with an overheating engine, the other with a full power shutdown, made worse by several seconds of panic on the part of the pilot when he wasn't sure if he had toggled the eject system back on, or had secured it to full off.
*** The launch cycle continued and dictating in some last minute notes on his wrist-mounted memo pad Jason turned away from Doomsday, went over to his Rapier, and climbed into the cockpit."
* Chapter 4
** "He hated atmosphere fighting, where anything much beyond a click a second was far too much. He bled off speed, watching the nav screen which was plotting out his trajectory, a thin blue line on the bottom of the screen showing the edge of the atmosphere. He felt the controls go mushy, the Rapier's computer automatically switching from thrusters to wing control surfaces. Fuel was now going to be a constant concern; flying inside the atmosphere, the hydrogen scoops would simply create too much drag. He closed the scoops and soared in."

source:=Wing Commander: Fleet Action
* Chapter 1
** "He was damn near hanging still in space, sparing a quick glance to his tactical display, filled now with a swarm of blue and red dots. A Kilrathi Gratha heavy fighter flashed by, followed by a Rapier. He heard Jonesy in the turret behind him, stammering out a curse as she snapped off a quick volley. His Broadsword shuddered, damage information blipping red for his rear starboard stabilizer. A spray of mass driver rounds arched up from the carrier as it twisted away, and he nudged up the throttle to follow the ship as it continued to turn."
** "Hunter swept past the edge of the fireball, and then turned back towards Munro, ready to offer backup support for the Marine landing operation. The red blips of the few remaining Kilrathi fighters covering the carrier were winking off the screen as the Rapier squadrons finished them off."
** " "I hate losing people, but trading a Rapier, a Sabre and two of your Broadswords for a light carrier is a damn fine piece of work in my book. I wish it had always been that easy." "
* Chapter 3
** "He closed the door behind him and walked down the now dimmed corridors. He passed the flight ready room and had a flash memory of his first day aboard, chewing out his new pilots, and passed on into the hangar deck. The Rapiers, Ferrets, and Sabres lined the deck and it felt strange to hear the silence. No engines humming, no shouted commands blaring over the loudspeakers, the hissing roar of the catapult or the thunderclap of engines kicking in afterburners on a hot launch. It was a silence that was as complete and deeply disturbing as if he were walking through a tomb."
* Chapter 5
** " "They had some problems getting the four, the peace commission kicked up a royal stink. We're lucky we got what we did."
*** "It figures," Jason sighed. "That commission really screwed us up."
*** "What do you mean?"
*** "That report that we'd have ten squadrons of Rapiers and Sabres, well forget it."
*** "What the hell happened?"
*** "The shipment was blocked by the commission. Seems that the Kilrathi ambassador caught wind of the deal, screamed holy hell, and the Baron even got into it, threatening to end all peace negotiations if the ships were allowed to leave Earth system. Rodham, of course, caved in. The three transports, loaded down with fighters and spare parts were blocked from leaving moon orbit. So now we've got to scrounge up whatever we can find around here." "
* Chapter 12
** "Kevin tightened the grip on his joystick, his Rapier G jiggling slightly from his nervous hold on the stick. It was certainly the biggest strike group he had ever flown with, more than two hundred and fifty fighters and attack bombers launched from four carriers. The extra fifty heavy strike craft from Saratoga were missed, the carrier still half a system away with a main engine fuel pump acting up. Two hundred and eighty fighters were being held in reserve as protection for the fleet carriers and as a second strike wave."
** " "This is Tolwyn. Good luck to all of you and good hunting." The image winked off and Kevin smiled. Typical Brit understatement. The forward edge of Rapiers, Raptors, Ferrets and Hornets, running ahead of the attack wave, slammed into the opposing wall of opposition defending the Kilrathi heavy carriers."

Wing Commander: False Colors
* Chapter 12
** "Wing Lounge, FRLS Karga ing MM VII, Vaku System 1925 hours (CST), 2670.358
"Break leftl Break leftl" The voice in Bondarevsky's helmet receivers was urgent. "Come on, Captain, you can nail this guyl"
Bondarevsky pulled the joystick hard over, rolling to the left and trying to spot his quarry. The Strakha bucked and kicked as if it resented the very idea of a human pilot flying it, but he fought the controls and forced the fighter into the turn. He reached for the sensor controls to narrow the focus and try to get an accurate position estimate on the cloaked enemy fighter he knew was closing in for the kill, but a split second too late he realized he'd instinctively reached for the spot where they would have been located on one of the Ferrets he'd flown back in his days as Tarawa's Wing Commander. The sudden realization made him try to shift in mid-reach, but that sent his bionic arm into a feedback spasm."

* Chapter 4
** "Tallyho," Maniac replied cheerfully, "four Ferrets in two-by-two diamond formation. Alpha flight—break and attack. Beta flight—stay behind the transport with me. Alpha, execute attack plan White."
The four Arrows peeled off, blasting their afterburners to close on the four startled Ferrets. One Ferret died at once, cut apart by an Arrows twinned ion cannon and lasers. The rest of the obsolete light fighters tried to scatter, but were out-performed by the newer, more heavily armed Arrows.
The last Ferret exploded less than a minute later. "Scratch four bogies," Maniac reported, his voice flat and professional."Standing by to assume top cover. It's all yours, Green Leader."
*** "Blair's communications scanner locked on Maniac's tactical channel. "Colonel,"Marshall said, "I got trouble. I got lots of Border reinforcements inbound. It looks like older stuff, Ferrets and some Rapiers.
We can hold 'em, but don't waste any time. Okay?"
* Chapter 5
** "Colonel," Maniac said, "I've got bogies inbound from the jump point up ahead. I'd say from their speed that they're light jobs, maybe Arrows or Ferrets. What do we do?"
*** "The leading Hellcats closed enough to take the trailing edges of the fleeing group under fire. Blair watched from far astern as the Hellcat leader singled out one Ferret for attention,then methodically picked it apart. He was relieved to see a yellow blip appear on his tactical screen as the Ferret's pilot ejected. "Now we'll have some answers," he mumbled."
* Chapter 6
** Blair knew that in spite of everything he'd seen,his loyalty had never been tested. He thought back to the dark times, after he'd been relegated to flying Ferrets on leg patrols. In those days he'd been suspected of being either a turncoat, a coward or, worse yet, incompetent. Yet he'd remained loyal, and eventually had been given the opportunity to rehabilitate himself on the Concordia."
*** "Approximately twelve bogies," Strike King said. "It looks like a motley mix of Ferrets and Rapiers, with a couple of Sabers. There's a second group inbound.Probably about the same numbers. Stand by telemetry."
*** "He checked his scanner, unamused to see the Border Worlds ships falling back to protect the frigates. The much faster Ferrets and Arrows were already past him, vectoring towards the frigates before turning. The Lex's Arrows raged after them in hot pursuit. One Arrow caught a frigates defensive bolt in its teeth and vanished. The rest, undaunted, fired as they passed him, their pilots clogging the radio channels as they tried to coordinate their attack. He caught a quick signal burst as Colonel Fans wave plowed into the far side of the battle, catching those Border Worlds ships that couldn't disengage in a pincer."
* Chapter 7
** "Two fighters, a Rapier and a Saber, angled in and joined the queue over the carrier. Blair looked around at the firefly glows of the little ships as they swirled around, waiting their turns to land. Another cluster of fighters, this time Ferrets and what looked like a single Arrow, filtered through the jump point and aimed for the two fast transports."
"What the hell are those?" he said.
"What the hell are what?" Maniac replied.
"The transports," Blair said. "It looks like they're taking on fighters."
"They are," Maniac answered. "We're staging smaller ships, Ferrets mostly, and a few Rapiers, off them."
"Those're too small to have launch tubes!"
"They don't," Maniac confirmed, "they just kind of push their birds out the back and let them fend for themselves. They lose one occasionally." He clucked his tongue. "They do shuttle runs, picking up fresh birds and pilots when we get low, and transfer 'em over here to fill in our losses. They'll eventually empty out. Then they'll go back to the boneyards and pick up more rehabbed ships and the latest graduates of what they call flight school." He frowned. "Most of the rookies don't last long, or so I'm told."
Blair stared at the transports, appalled at the waste. "Half-baked pilots in obsolete craft—that's crazy."
"Welcome to the lunatic fringe," Maniac replied dryly "The Border Worlds don't have the numbers the Fleet does, so they have to get more creative more quickly to keep going. A lot of what they're doing gets pilots killed, but it does allow a magnum launch of more than six birds."
*** "We're down to thirty-one front line strike craft, with seventeen obsolete models—Sabers, Scimitars, and Ferrets—still in storage belowdecks. The flight deck is operational and we've got nine fighters, mostly obsolete, that we can fix, more or less. They're mostly older jobs," he looked at Blair, "with some notable exceptions."
*** "The carrier behind Blair opened up, the heavier weapons of her anti-boat batteries lancing out to engage the fighters that wandered into range. A trickle of light ships, Ferrets and an odd Arrow, still emerged from theIntrepid's bay as ground crews brought them up from below and spotted them for launch. The latecomers were fed into the blazing fight in singles and pairs, adding their guns and missiles to the Intrepid's weight. The frigates and smaller escorts began to creep closer to the dogfight, interposing themselves between the fighters and the battered, vulnerable ship behind."
* Chapter 9
** "Four hours later Blair sat in his command chair, worrying a thumbnail and wondering if he had made a grave mistake in trusting Bean. Maniac had launched, backed by a full magnum launch. Only a few light fighters, mostly obsolete Ferrets were left to guard the ship. Maniac and the strike force had vanished into space, following Bean to god only knew where. Had they been duped by the old man?"
* Chapter 11
** "Got it," Wilford replied. He looked at his aide de camp, whose face was pale as a sheet. "Order all personnel back to their ships, and make ready to move the fleet to Telamon." He paused. "Transfer as many of those new Hellcats over from the Princeton as we can fit. Then move whatever Rapiers and Ferrets we can to the escort carriers. Their groups suffered pretty heavily in yesterday's attack."
The KIS Karga was a Bhantkara-Class Carrier in the service of the Empire of Kilrah. He was named after the Kilrathi-Hero Karga.

History
Raid on the Landreich
In 2670, the Karga was the flagship of Admiral Largka Cakg dai Nokhtak. He was leading a fleet on a Raid on the Free Republic of the Landreich. Only the Karga and the destroyer KIS Frawqirg had survived the Battle and retreated into the Vaku System, pursued by the Terran Confederation Cruisers TCS Dover and TCS Juneau. During the Battle, the Frawqirg crashed on the surface of Vaku VII's Moon, Vaku VIIa (later called Nargrast). The Karga's flight deck was damaged so he couldn't launch any fighters. He managed to destroy the Dover but the Juneau crippled him. As his shield were about to fail, Admiral Cakg dai Nokhtak ordered many crewmen to abandon ship, including his nephew Murragh Cakg dai Nokhtak and to activate the self-destruct sequence to take the Juneau with them. The escape pods reached Vaku VIIa but due to a computer failure, the self-destruct sequence was aborted and the shields failed. Because of Vaku VII's radiation, all remaining crewmen, including the Admiral, decided to commit Zu'kara. The Karga would remain in orbit of Vaku VII for at least half a standard terran year.
Attempted coup d'état of Murragh Cakg dai Nokhtak
In 2675, Murragh Cakg dai Nokhtak took the FRLS Mjollnir to Pasqual in an attempt to take the Kiranka throne for himself. Support from the Free Republic of the Landreich had been expected but it never came and as a consequence, the planned invasion didn't take place. After being pursued by Chancellor Melek nar Kiranka's police forces, Murragh lives in the Landreich in exile.

In the fan-made Secret Ops modification Wing Commander: Unknown Enemy, the Intrepid participates in the defense of the Border Worlds against Nephilium invaders at the beginning of the conflict in 2681. The carrier BWS Dauntless (formerly the TCS Kipling), which was about to be decommissioned before the conflict began, was preparing to transfer her remaining fighters to the Intrepid when she was destroyed.
