Video Interview Transcript (February 26, 2007)
If you don't have the bandwidth to download the 230-megabyte Wing Commander Arena video interview from GameSpot, don't worry -- we've put together a text transcript. All the dialogue is from Electronic Arts Line Producer Sean Penney:

"You choose to be either Kilrathi or you choose to be human, and that's something you couldn't actually ever do in any of the previous Wing Commander titles"
That's a pretty unfair statement. For the original Wing Commander titles, playing the Kilrathi would have ment to do a completely new plot, FMV, missions. Like creating a whole second game. Also the statement is not true. You could fly Kilrathi ships in WC: Armada. Well, seeing this screenshot, I'm not too upset about it: http://www.wcnews.com/newestshots/fu...interview5.jpg "Sandman"? Looks like the developers played Wing Commander Saga. Which probably means they really are Wing Commander fans.

It's not a *criticism*, it's a statement.
The callsigns for the bots are all from previous WC games.

Yeah, I was rather impressed with some of the stuff they came up for the bot callsigns. I mean, "The Machine" - that's as obscure as you can get with WC references.
On the other hand, I'm not impressed with the random "x shot down y" messages that we see in some of the videos - the only thing in this game so far I haven't liked. The random texts in these messages are like something straight out of Quake or Unreal Tournament - I wish they'd come up with messages that fit the climate of the game better. |

Thanks for posting the transcript -- just finished downloading the HD video and it looks neato in 720p! Are you able to host the other HD Gamespot videos?
One thing I noticed in some of the earlier videos and which looks more visible in the capship vs capship portion of this video, is what appears to be a white map outline/border, presumably to indicate the playable map area -- is this the case or is it a rendering error? Regarding the "x shot down y" messages and taunting with 16-players online: not having played any form of Xbox Live before, if there is voice taunting/communication how will it work in practice? I thought Loaf mentioned something in another thread about the WC-esque way that comm chatter will function, but if there's 8-players on the same team all shouting different commands at the same time, won't it get a bit chaotic? Similarly, with 16-players taunting each other? Anyway, as I say I have no experience of Xbox Live and the voice setup, so perhaps it all works out smoothly. Cheers, Bryn

The first two HD Arena videos are at http://www.wcnews.com/arena
They're #1 and #2 in the video section. Comms in Arena require you to key the mic before you speak -- so everyone will only hear you while you're preassing 'down' on the d-pad. That frees up a lot of bandwidth, and makes it more like you're selecting WC-style comm messages.
