It wears the skull of its dead mother on its head. When it becomes lonesome, it is said to cry loudly.

Six from Saga (February 8, 2007)

The Wing Commander Saga mod for FreeSpace 2 has released several new screenshots. Here's the official word:
Quote:
The first six are action shots from one of our simulator missions in which the player is desperately trying to save the carrier Ticonderoga from an intense Kat assault. In the next three screenshots (run through an ATI post process filter), some of our nebulae provide a backdrop for a conflict between Confed and Kilrathi capital ships. Confed comes out on top… this time.
The Confederate starships are rather dark, but the Kilrathi fighters look very impressive -- it's always great to see a Gothri!

The hold dark Confed starship thing is all baout the lighting in freespace. that bg ol sun/lasers/(explotions?) lights up the part of any ship/fighter that is facing it. Any part not facing a light source will appear dark/darker.

In the WingCommander games the technology wasn't aroud for this so there are no dymanic lighting on the ship modles.

If it still appers dark to you thats just the diffcultly of catering to two parties. The freespace guys tend to like their game dark.

It has nothing to do with technology and everything to do with style. Privateer 2, years before FreeSpace, had dynamic lighting, and also chose to keep everything dark. The main Wing Commander series, on the other hand, was traditionally brighter than might be 'realistic' (colorful cockpits, ships, space backdrops, etc.).

But you can change the brightness via a command line in the launcher.

I'm probably one of the biggest Freespace fans here, but I prefer the gamer brighter.

You should slow down when you type.

Yeah, that sounds like a nice and fancy thing to see in practice, but it makes for a bad screenshot. All this work went into integrating detailed Wing Commander models and putting nice new textures on them, and all you see is a dark shadow.

If you want to do something about that... go to directory where Saga is installed and start the 'Launcher.exe'. Click on Features tab and write '-ambient_factor 140' to the custom flags line and try the game again after that.

Yeah, by now we all know you can go dig into the settings and adjust command line switches and turn up the lighting if you want.. but if you could do that, then you wouldn't need to look at screenshots in the first place. The point of screenshots in this case is to share the game with people who haven't played it yet or give a sneak peek at new things. Making screenshots that are too dark defeats the purpose.
