Name that ship!

Alrighty, so i've started working on one of the ships that may be seen roaming around the cosmos. Some may know it, others may be like 'what in the world is that from?? Well, I leave it to you all to 'Name that Ship!' search high and low the stores of WC information to find it...that's the only hint you'll get.

Here is the rough model right now. working on getting the proportions down at this stage, I think its pretty solid, and i'll move onto the next stage of actually making it look cool here soon (i.e. tommorrow, gotta study now)

Now Im no wing commander expert or nothing like that but it looks like that could be one of the magical shape shifting transports from armada.

Also looks as though your one of the first to model it. I always loved those ships as they are rarely seen. Now Im also curious are you going to arm that kilrathi transport or leave it as it was?

Of Course I could be wrong

Yeah I started to second guess myself after looking at the rear of the ship.

easy one, it's the Scarab

The Scarab is the merchant ship described in the opening story contained in the PRIVATEER manual.

I don't have this manual. What is this Scarab about as a ship -- besides that it's some merchant ship?

As far as I know it was never put into the manual. It's a piece of unpublished art that is in the CIC archives.

Thanks a lot. The story is evolving in a promising way. It's a shame it is finished shortly after it has begun .

I get the message
I'd like to share the PDF file, but I can't host something like that on my own, just images. Here's the rest in smaller images ( best I can do, sorry).

Both the Privateer manual (with the story) and the cartoons they opted not to buy are available at the CIC.

Published manual: http://download.wcnews.com/files/man...ide-Manual.pdf

Unused art: http://download.wcnews.com/files/doc...l-Art_High.zip

Great pictures and a lot of info. Thanks!

P.S.: BTW I neither believe that Americans are out to get me nor dislike them in general... I wouldn't even post here if that was the case, right?

So this weekend i'm looking at picking this back up, been busy with classes that are draining my brain of all thought power. Learn all that nifty pilots mission planning stuff this week, lots of time in front of a computer. Looking forward to the weekend.

Thats really cool, even if it reminds me a little bit of the Cerberus.

What sort of stuff is going to be added to the bottom, since you don't get a good look at it from the reference materials?

I could be wrong, but that looks like Glen Johnson's work to me...

The artist for the unused manual stuff was someone named Greg Follender, who wasn't with Origin -- he was based in New York City and did the stuff on commission. There's some copies of faxes between him and Joel Manners in our archive section. I'm certainly curious about why they ended up dropping the art (he also did art for the rest of the manual, including line drawings of all the ships, which also didn't get used).

Glen Johnson's Claw Marks artwork was certainly the basis for it.

Weighing in...

Howdy folks...

This is Greg Follender... the artist in question in regards to those unused Freebooter manual illustrations.
Incidentally, some of the artwork sandwiched in between the game images is an excerpt from an old graphic novel I created and sent to Joel Manners as a sort of tryout for the job when he first pitched it to me.

Very strange looking over that stuff after so long... oh... and damned painful as well.
Some of it is just plain embarrassing. Still... I was very young and hopeful and it was one of my first paying freelance gigs. Too bad it never went anywhere. They never even really told me why they dropped the finished manual from the project... money issues are all they would offer for an explanation.

As far as the name of the artist you mentioned in prior posts regarding my works influence... I've never heard of the man. All I was given was basic schematics of each ship and idea sketches for basic costuming. The rest is all me... in al it's lackluster glory. If the images do seem coincidentally reminiscent of another artist's work... then I truly feel bad for him, poor bastard

I'm glad someone posted those images though... all I have are the loose originals (which look a HELL of a lot better than those low-res scans, I must say... relatively speaking of course) and they are a pain to handle because of their age and fragile condition.

Thanks for the kind words though, folks...

Regards,
GREG

Thanks for the info Greg. It really is a shame the art never got used. No matter how much better you are now, they're certainly a whole hell of a lot better than I could ever manage!

Also I'm certain the CIC guys would gladly host higher resolution scans of the images here as well.

Woah, very cool that you found us! I'm the guy who scanned all that -- they're from a folder of photocopies that was still lying around the Digital Anvil/former Origin offices in 2003.

Everyone we've shown that art to agrees that it would have been a lot cooler than what they went with (screenshots from the game and big blocks of text without much art at all).

Let us know, if he contacted you back (or other way around) about his art and possibility of scanning it in better resolution.
