i was lookin around on Gamestop's site and i came across this...

note at the bottom it says "* Renew at your pace with or without a credit card" does this finally mean i can play Live without a credit card? it seems that way but I had thought that with the regular XBox Live subscription cards and those require credit cards anyway. yeah i know this sound stupid that i don't know but i just want to make sure that's all

Although some subscription services have experimented with non-credit card plans, I don't think there's any real reason to believe this is one of them. Many subscription cards for many different things have been sold with wording that would seem to indicate no credit card is required, but most all of them still need a credit card for verification. If you didn't need a credit card for xbox live, then you could just keep popping those 2 month free trials indefinitely. And if you got banned, then you could just snap your fingers and create a new account. I really don't see xbox live going credit card-free.

The problem isn't the USA. However I quite expect that there will be a credit card less solution for Europe. There aren't too many people with cards here.

i see. ok thanks for the info. btw Chris. im assuming in order to transfer my saved games from my current Xbox to the 360 (if possible) i'd have to get a memory card?

Why would there be? You need a credit card for X-Box Live right now.

Well, memory cards are the only practical way to transfer saved games off the xbox hard drive, but it doesn't look like XBox 1 memory cards will hook into the 360. Backwards compatibility itself will be limited, so transfering your hard drive data over is a pretty low priority for them.

so i'll pretty much have to play all my games that are backwards compatible all over again from the beginning then?

I will build an extension to my house so I can keep the X-Box 1 around for my older games.

I guess. I don't really see why you'd need/want to do that. That doesn't seem to be the point of the backwards compatibility. Major XBox Live titles will be the first to be backwards compatible on the 360, so there's really no need for old savegame data. And years down the line, when more games are compatible, if you feel like going back and playing an old game you finished, then it'd make sense to start over from the beginning anyway. If there's any games you're half finished playing now, then finish them before the 360 comes out, because you'll be busy playing new games in late November. Many games like Dead or Alive Volleyball or Steel Battalion, where you collect important stats or items, can't even be transferred between original XBoxes, so it's a moot point there.

i see... it's just that i've been playin Forza for a while and if <big assumption> it was backwards compatible then it'd be a minor pain for me to go back and race all those races again to get back all the cars i had. but i mainly see your point. i guess i'll end up trading in my xbox for the 360 after all...

edit: on second thought. there's always forza 2...

Well, there may yet be a way to transfer data from the Xbox 1 to 360, I just don't think they've established one yet. Forza should be one of the first backwards compatible titles, as it's one of Microsoft's own flagship titles for 2005. Your situation is one of the ones that would warrant a data transfer. Technically, I'm pretty sure there are adapters to modify an XBox controller to standard USB which could plug into the 360, but I'm not sure the system would accept controller input or recognize an XBox 1 formatted memory card. Best to wait and see.

i guess i can wait til the price drops a lil. it'll be better for me and halo 3 doesn't come out until next year anyway

transfering saves

well just read in the XBox 360 Guide magazine i found in Borders that XBox games will not be transferable to the 360  so it looks like im gonna trade in my XBox earlier than expected. :p

This is why, IMO, Playstation has the corner on Console Gamers. They were the first Console unit to switch over to CD format, and as a result PS1 Games are Backwards Compatable with the PS2. Not to mention that memory cards go both ways too (though you need a PS2 memory card for PS2 games).

If Sony is smart at all they'll make PS3's backwards compatible with PS1 and PS2 games, and memory cards. And then they will be the only Console to support three generations of games.

Some people say that the newer games for the PS2 are better...and I think for some of them, that's true. But some are just getting worse. Like the Spyro the Dragon Series (Say what you will about that game, it's still fun) or the Crash Bandicoot Series. The games they made for the PS2 just aren't up to par with the originals.

Well, if backwards compatibility is king, then the revolution will be the new ps2. It will play all nintendo games from the NES up. I just hope they make up their minds on whether we will pay for those vintage games or not. I keep reading conflicting reports.

No it wasn't.

That's not the reason.

It doesn't.

No it won't.

More important is whether the player will care to use the feature.

When has Nintendo ever passed up a chance to charge money for something twice?

Yeah, plenty of other people beat them to the punch.
It's worth noting that your vaunted Playstation actually started it's development lifecycle as a SegaCD style plugin for the Super Famicom in Japan.

That's not the reason.
And the reason that your PS2 is backwards compatable is that they stuffed a PSX in there too. Thats why you can't interchange the memory cards for the two systems.

More important is whether the player will care to use the feature.
As far as I'm concerned, it's the only reason to want one now.

It really wouldn't make sense for anyone to not charge for the games. But who cares? I look forward to being able to play Jackal again with friends.

They've sold in the area of about 8 million copies of the classic NES line of GBA cartridges, so I think there's a decent market for people downloading and playing old games. If the price is even better, say $5 (more likely $10 I guess) instead of $20, I expect there'll be lots of people doing it as more people become accustomed to buying things online in general.

I think the general procedure has been clear for a while now. You'll definitely be buying games. Like many other services, there will be all sorts of various promotions however. A couple key games might be free, certain games will be free at certain times, certain games will be free with the purchase of regular Revolution games and so on.

Backwards compatibility helps a number of people justify the purchase at launch, but it really loses its impact very quickly as the system gets older. The PS1 game market has been dead for years and years, ever since you could get PS2 games for $20. Why would you get some dated PS1 Spyro game from 1997 when there's already a couple budget-priced PS2 iterations? Frosty addressed the rest of the points. The PS2 was the best selling non-handheld system this generation for a variety of reasons, many having to do with marketing and marketplace positioning more than technical capabilities or game lineups.

If you take a quick look at the emulation scene, it will be plainly obvious that people REALLY like to play NES, SNES and N64 games (among several other old consoles). PLaying them all on one console is a lot easier and more fun than having to maintain and plug 6 machines to one (or more) tvs. Heck, one of the most popular use for those PSPs is running SNES emulators.

Of course the Revolution is not meant to be just the uber-emu, but the EXTRA appeal of that feature is really great. This is not simple backwards compatibility (that would include the GC, basically), this is a lot more. And it can help boost sales at launch. After all, you can trade in your cube and keep games like Mario Party and Donkey Konga (to cite the ones Chris likes best), while getting a shinny Revolution with Metroid Prime 3 or Super Smach Bros Online.

Actually, my comment was in reference to the shitty controller options available for the Revolution.

Anyone who can't be bothered to invest the pocket change it costs to actually buy an old Nintendo system and some games probably doesn't deserve the feature in the first place.
