Wing Commander III and IV CapShip Weapons

Bandit LOAF

Long Live the Confederation!
Hey gang! I posted the first version of this to another thread recently, but I thought I'd expand it a bit and add Wing Commander IV. Consider this a work in progress... but there's some interesting stuff already!

Wing Commander III & IV Capital Ship Armaments

Errata

· There's some debate over what the three capital ship weapons are. The red bolts are lasers, the gray bolts are tachyon guns and the yellow bolts are anti-matter guns.

· While many of the specifications listed in Claw Marks are incorrect, all but one have the correct NUMBER of turrets. The exception is the Kilrathi Heavy Destroyer (Ralaxath) which is listed as 11 lasers and 3 tachyon guns but instead has 10 lasers and 1 anti-matter gun. I suspect that the tachyon guns are the complete error in the listing.

· The following are listed correctly in Victory Streak: both factions' transports and the human light carrier (Yorktown.)

· CapShip Missiles do not appear as the standard armament of these ships; instead, the game assigns them for particular situations. The Kilrathi Corvette can carry at least one, as it fires a Skipper in Orsini 4 and Ariel 3. The Kilrathi Destroyer (Scout) can carry at least three, which it fires (pandemic-tipped) in Locanda 2.

· Both of the human ships of the line, the cruiser and the destroyer, fire a single CSM when batting Kilrathi warships. In these cases, the intent may be more that the game needs to 'script' the ending to what's visually a gun battle between the two ships... but you could argue easily each way! The missiles are visible (and targetable.)

· The Concordia-class carrier in Wing Commander IV is something of an oddity. It has two fewer turrets than the Yorktown-class light carrier in Wing Commander III when displayed in-game, nine instead of eleven. It also clearly has a burned out ‘slot’ for a tenth turret, which appears on both the TCS Lexington and the TCS Princeton. Making matters more confusing, the ‘non turret’ clearly DOES have the 3D turret model in place on the cinematic model.

· Note that the Union of Border Worlds version of the Tallahassee-class cruiser lacks the ‘twin’ turrets on the center/top.

· The Terran Confederation Caernaven-class frigate can fire up to three CapShip Missiles in Orestes 1.

Nice work LOAF great info here. The cap ship missiles were almost certainly scripted rather than launched.

I have one 'possible' correction. I think the Vesuvius has 13 dual mount amg's in gameplay. The FMV with Eisen ordering the turrets taken out shows the 14th at the top back middle but I can't recall seeing it in game play. I could be wrong as I regretfully haven't played WC4 in a while.

Corect me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the Victory fire capship missles in one of the loosing path missions in WCIII? I think it's Delius 3, but I'm not sure

Ahh yes, that was in the original thread but I stupidly didn't port it back to the original doc.

The Victory fires two CSMs (simultaneously) at the Kilrathi base at Delius. Unlike other appearances of the weapon, they can't be targeted individually... (you can shoot them down and save the base if you want, though!)

I do think we should count it as having two CSM launchers, since it's clearly part of the mission design that you're escorting the Victory for this special attack.

Hmm I wonder why they removed the Antimatter guns from every IV class except the Supercarriers which actually have more Antimatter guns, though fewer guns overall, then the Dreadnoughts from III?
