    Fellow Wingnuts,

I am not sure if someone already posted this. I did a quick search on the forum and couldn't find it, so apologies if this is a double post.

As you probably now, G4TV aired a 4 part show with their list of the top 100 games of all time.

Wing Commander II made the list as #71.

Ok cool, but is this serious? Where are the Commander Keen and Monkey Island series'? It seems they only put one title per series to the list, as in Doom 1 or Quake 1, 2 missing, yet some games like GTA or Zelda got multiple entries? This is confusing.

I give absolutely no credence whatsoever to any of those list shows. At best, they reflect the opinions of the show's staff, and if there's one thing I've learned about the folks in Hollywood, it's that they have absolutely no grasp on reality whatsoever.

The list show that really sold me on the worthlessness of list shows was one on VH-1 of the top ten TV and movie villains of all time, one in which Freddy Krueger got beat out by the villains from Batman (the ones from the 60's serial - the one everyone involved with Batman seriously wants to forget).

Yeah, this is exactly one of those lists that nobody should care about. Bioshock at #3? Well, gee, check back in ten years and see how that's going. Doom 2 at #12? Seriously? Not the original Doom, but the lackluster sequel that disappointed everyone? Uncharted 2 at #14? Why not the first Uncharted, the one that actually impressed people? Etc., etc...

Also, putting Minecraft on a list of top games is like putting Lego on a list of people's favourite sports.

I agree that the list is awful. No Dune II? No SimCity? No Falcon 4? No Monkey Island? No Tomb Raider? No Need For Speed? No Fifa?

But anyway, this being the repository of everything Wing Commander, I though it was worth posting.

    Regards,

    Vic.

I agree on SimCity--it was my most-played game in the late 1980s, and one of the first major titles that did not have a defined victory condition yet was still wildly popular. Even if it doesn't count as one of the most-entertaining games of all time, it was definitely one that had massive impact on the way that both designers and consumers thought about gaming.

We do appreciate it! It is nice to see Wing Commander remembered in the mainstream (?) media, even if it is part of a very poor list.

I also wonder why they didn't have Robin Williams (who shows up on some of the others) to do the Wing Commander II talking head; he was a big fan back in the day.

This reminds me of an internet comic: http://chainsawsuit.com/2012/02/20/minecraft-and-other-labors/

Funny but true: Chris Roberts wanted to get Robin Williams to play the Merlin hologram in the WC movie... I don't know how that would have turned out. I don't really see that character as working with Robin's usual comic stylings. I always read Merlin as being more or less dry and straight-faced ironic kind of humor.
