Wing Commander Audio Project Proposal (Voice acting roles anyone?)

Plywood Fiend

Rear Admiral
Stemming from my recent work reviewing WCA episodes (Thanks for putting that on the news by the way), I’ve had the idea of producing a Wing Commander Audio series. To that end I’ve written a short script as a kind of prototype to gauge whether or not the community would be interested in the like.

If anyone is interested, then there are places available for voice actors, with four primary roles and four additional minor roles with just a handful of lines.

Plot Synopsis: A backwater system guarded by two outdated Confed destroyers, the TCS Nottingham and the TCS Apache comes under attack by Kilrathi raiders consisting of a single modern Kilrathi destroyer plus escorts. The Apache is quickly destroyed, and pilots from the Nottingham fight a losing battle for as long as they can, slowly getting picked off, before the Nottingham rams the Kilrathi destroyer, saving the system.

Primary Characters:

Captain Stuart ‘Finch’ Campbell – Late 20’s to early 30’s, a fairly easy going individual. He is commander of a five-strong fighter wing that hasn’t had to fight in months and traces of complacency have started to sneak into his wing as a result, nevertheless he knows his duty and can stand firm in the face of pressure.

Audition Lines:

Don't let him get past you, just one torpedo hit will destroy the Apache.’

Maybe. Either that or we get to safeguard the meagre resources of another worthless system from unambitious pirates.’

1st Lieutenant Neil ‘Husky’ McCandless – Mid 20’s. Inexperienced and ill prepared for the war, and he knows it. At one time he was a shuttle pilot working as a courier for a small corporation on Earth. He’d never even flown in space until the Battle of Earth, when his small, unarmed shuttle was used as cannon fodder along with other civilian vessels. Miraculously, he survived and the very next day accepted an offer given to all survivors to join the Navy. Since then hasn’t seen a single Kilrathi fighter.

Audition Lines:

‘Tangier isn't self sufficient, and Logo is just a couple of asteroid mining bases. Both systems get... I mean got... all their food from Locanda.’

‘Shit! The bomber got a torpedo off.

1st Lieutenant Sam ‘Disciple’ Wynn – (Can be male or female) Late 20’s. A gloomy, sometimes snide but generally decent pilot. Feels very much like they’ve been put out to pasture and doesn’t adhere to regulations with too much zeal. He/she remembers his/her duty and priorities as soon as the Kilrathi arrive however.

Audition Lines

‘You mean we get to go back to the action after this lovely exile? Uh, I mean holiday.’

‘Sir, those transports are defenceless!’

Lieutenant Bradley – (Can be male or female) The Nottingham’s com officer. Business-like and professional, you don’t see much of Bradley beyond official communications.

Audition Lines:

‘Hellcats 1 and 2, you are cleared to launch.’

Okinawa and Helios, adjust your course and head towards the Nottingham. We'll cover you as best we can.’

Minor Roles – (Can all be male or female)

Confederation newsreader

Audition Line:These spokespeople declined to comment when asked to justify the evacuation of the sector HQ at Blackmane’

Apache Com officer

Audition Line: ‘Mayday, mayday, this is the Apache, we have taken major damage...’ (NOTE: This is this character’s only line, so odds are I’ll simply wind up using the best audition recording.)

Transport Com officer 1

Audition Line: ‘This is the civilian cargo vessel Okinawa to any Confederation vessel, we have Kilrathi ships pursuing us, requesting immediate assistance.’

Transport Com officer 2

Audition Line: ‘This is the Helios, we're heading towards you.’

If anyone’s interested, please send all recorded audition lines as separate wav or mp3 files to rmepaul@googlemail.com by 12th November and I shall contact whoever I pick shortly thereafter with further details. Feel free to audition for more than one role. If this project proves popular, I’ll look into doing a larger and more ambitious production.

Also, whilst I’m here, here’s a sample clip to give you some idea of what the finished product might end up sounding like (though with a different (better) voice for the finished version):

Thanks to the staff for the mentioning this project in the news.

If anyone's interested in auditioning, I'm extending the deadline for submissions to 25/11/12

One week left for anyone who wants to audition to send me their lines. At the moment there've been a couple of people interested in the project but it's very much a case of the more the merrier.

So this would be like one of those old radio shows just with a Wing Commander setting. Wish I could help, but I'll definitely be tuning in. Looking forward to it.

I'd be interested but I thought you needed the recordings by the 12th. Has this changed?

Iceblade - Pretty much. If this one goes well I'll look into doing a longer audio series, or else just a number of individual productions.

Malcolm Reynolds - It was, but I extended the deadline to the 25th after the project got a mention on the CIC news. I don't think too many people were aware of it before then.

Aaaaand we're done. Thanks to everyone who auditioned and showed an interest in the project, the roles have now been assigned and work will hopefully commence soon. I'll be making updates here as needed.

I'm sorry to say that I just noticed this. Should you need additional voices or begin another project, please let me know. I have some voice acting experience and would love to participate.

Will do. There'll certainly be more projects. This one started out as an experiment to see if there'd be any community interest in such things, and evidently there is, so I'll certainly be making more in the future.

When might it be finished? We talking about a release in a couple of days or will it probably be a week or two?

Just a quick update; all the recordings are now done and editing is well underway. As a vague guess I'd say the project is about... 42% complete. I don't want to make a guess yet as to when it will be finished, but we're making good time.

Finished!

Presenting 'Wing Commander: From the Jaws of Defeat', first of what will hopefully be plenty of Wing Commander audio productions.

(A quick warning to headphone users, this can get very loud at times. Also, for anyone who dislikes such things, be warned of strong language.)

I'd also like to take a moment to extend my appreciation to the quality team I had working with me on this project, specifically Malcolm Reynolds, Slim Jim and Fowl Firekkan. Their dedication, enthusiasm, initiative and suggestions have all been invaluable, and it was a privilege to work with them all. Thanks guys.

I suppose I'll need to get started on another script.
