What works, what doesn't

Hi All,
I am planning on writing a history of the Vega Campaign of 2654 as seen from the eyes of a historian 60 years after the end of the Kilrathi War. It will, if successful, will read as a detailed but interesting order of battle or after action report. While replaying WC1, I became aware that so much was going on in the campaign that we were not able to see. If possible, I want to show where specific ships were serving and what they were doing, like the TCS Victory or the Concordia super cruiser (if you guys think it wise to include movie references). I plan to include the movements of the Tiger's Claw, the Kyoto, Eagle's Talon and any other ship or fighter squadron, human or alien that is referenced in the novels, games, manuals or other source material. I want to explain the variety of military forces Confed used in the campaign and explain why flying off the Claw we saw very few other Confed capships.

What I'm looking for is what you guys as the fans would want me to include or not include. Should I add movie references or not? Did Confed Army have a role to play? Should I include Icarus TCN base as home to the 6th Fleet (Confederation Handbook)? Did the Torgo HQ station exist in this time?

I know that alot of this can be speculation, but I am looking to make it as close to canon and as far from simple fanfiction as possible. Any assistance would greatly be appreciated. If you wish to send me documents or large files, my email address is mbjr1@consultant.com.

Thanks

You know, I don't think I've ever seen any fanfic that would try to integrate the movie with the game - so I think it's definitely a good idea to try to include movie references.

(and don't let anybody tell you otherwise :))

You might want to grab a copy of the WC1/2 official guide as a reference, it basically does the same thing around a character called Carl LaFong....worth the $....

I own that book Dundradal, thanks though for the advice. Also, this is my spin on Confed's various fleets:

3rd- Sol sector strike fleet

4th- Vega sector close action groups (super cruisers and raiding light cruisers primarily), was based at Pegasus TCN base until its destruction. I'm thinking of making either the Vega, Proxima or Eddings system the new HQ, any thoughts?

6th- Vega defense fleet (older battleships and Ranger-class Light Carriers). The 6th fleet based out of Icarus TCN base will be responsible for escorting Marine Forces, convoys and providing general heavy fire support.

7th- Primary Vega Sector Strike Fleet (Concordia and Bengal-class Carriers). This Fleet will be split between two main task forces, TF72 and TF75.

Task Force-72 will consist of the Concordia carrier battlegroups. These CVBGs will be responsible for knocking the Kilrathi Fleet out of the Vega Sector and providing a distraction for TF75 to engage in the primary objective of the operation.

Task Force-75 will consist of Bengal-class Carriers and advanced Exeter-class Destroyers that will be operating in semi-independent Task Units. These units will bypass the primary fleet actions and attempt to enter the Venice system through various 'Backdoor' jump nodes. The Kilrathi station in the Venice system will be the primary target of the entire operation.

For example: In many canon sources, it has been acknowedged that the TCS Tiger's Claw, TCS Kyoto and TCS Eagle's Talon were operating in the Venice system during the last mission in WC1. I propose that all three carriers were part of a task group of TF75, and that because they appear to act independently of eachother in the game, that they were each catagorized under separate task units. Tiger's Claw could have been Task Unit 75.3.1, Kyoto was Task Unit 75.3.2 and Eagle's Talon was Task Unit 75.3.3.

Any thoughts? I know this might seem complex, but I'm sure a full-scale military operation in the 27th century would be. Also, this may explain why Blair doesn't come up to too many friendly capital ships.

Might not want to call them "fleets" instead stick to task forces and task groups. Fleets tend to be for large areas of space, and have a strike and defense fleet seems a little weird as this is not shown in WC....

The 'Fleet' thing I got directly from Wing Commander sources. The 4th and 6th were based at Pegasus and Icarus respectively (according to my newly purchased Confederation handbook), the 3rd was referenced in Fleet Action and the 7th was referenced in both Fleet Action and Action Stations.

The strike and defense roles of the fleet I took from the WWII fleet model. Nowadays, naval fleets are actually areas of responsiblity; i.e. the 6th Fleet is the Mediterranean, the 2nd is the Atlantic Ocean Area...so on and so forth. In WWII, when the numbered Fleet system evolved from the US Atlantic Fleet, US Pacific Fleet and Asiatic Fleet they had certain areas of responsibility, but they were far more fluid. On many occasions, multiple fleet task forces (the combatant forces of the said fleets) would operate in the same area together. In the Pacific for example, the 3rd Fleet and 5th Fleet were principal striking formations with the newest Fleet Carriers and Fast Battleships, whereas the 7th Fleet acting as the naval component of McAuthur's command was made up of the old Dreadnought-Battleships and Light/Escort Carriers. The 7th Fleet effectively acted in more of a defensive role than 3rd and 5th Fleets. The ships assigned to the 7th screened McArthur's landing forces and covered naval supply lines.

I figured there was so much in parallel from the WC universe to that of WWII that this system of organization might work. It also may explain why we see so many canon sources for fleets that are appearantly operating in the same sector or region.

Boom, dude, boom.

This might be relevant, if not, please ignore, but I'm trying to set up a fanfic revolving around Thrakath's victory in Deneb which occured concurrently with events in WC2. Has this been done to death? Also, does anybody have any information on ship deployments? I can't play WC2 anymore, and all I can remember is a backhanded reference meant to somber-up the Mega-happy ending of WC2.

Sure you can. Just get the windows verions of WC1, WC2, and WC3. They are all in one package called "Wing Commander: The Kilrathi Saga".

......They play just fine on Windows XP!

:D

......You don't need "MyJemm" or "DosBox" to play them.

I wish somebody could examine the files to convert WC4 from Dos to Windows, and make similar files for the original "Wing Commander: Privateer".

(If such files already exist, please give me the link!!!)

Dosbox isn't working in XP very well.......The game is way too slow to play, and of course, MyJemm won't work in Windows XP.

:(

Something that most historians face is either a LOT of sources or NO sources at all and, if it is a LOT of sources, they tend to disagree over what actually happened.
So, I say, if you have a lot of sources. Then skip some of them and use your imagination to fill the gaps.
