What if?

Let's suppose that Origin released a new WC. What if it was not interactive like 3,4 and 5 but like Freelancer, where you dont have actors but "robots" trying to pretend they are real. Personally, i hated Freelancer, it tried to match Privateer but it's much worse. NO VIDEO(unless you call that video)? NO ACTORS? are you kidding me? am i playing tomb raider or something? but the question is not that. what if the new wing commander was like Freelancer. would you still buy it? i wouldnt even want to see it!

I have not played freelancer but I would have to agree that it would be wing commander, and as such I would buy it! (especially if Chris Roberts was at the helm)

so, that means that even if they named quake III or another game(which has nothing to do with WC) as wing commander, you would buy it. i really dont understand this logic guys. it's not the name that makes it good.

Well, so far all the games named Wing Commander were good, at least I think so :p

Of course if "Origin released a new WC" game, it would definitely have something to do with previous WC games. Like, if they made a Quake-like WC, you would probably play a Marine fighting the Kilrathi on Repleetah, or assaulting a Kilrathi cap ship, or infiltrating a Kilrathi base to steal documents. I´d SURELY buy something like that, wouldn´t you?

As for having "no video" and "no actors", like LOAF said, you´re talking about WC1 and WC2, where we have only cartoons and, nevertheless, they are my favourites WC games. Freelancer sucks for other reasons than not having real actors.

Right now, Eder and Co. are developing WC Standoff, which looks like will be amazingly GREAT, and they ain´t using actors, but nicely drawn cartoons which I think will work perfectly in the game, specially if you consider their total lack of funding.

WC success, I think, is not based on having actors or not, but on solid and interesting plots/stories and great gameplay. Bring back a game with the WC1 cartoons and I´ll be the second to buy it (LOAF will beat me :( )

I'd buy it. Especially if I had a machine that would run it. I might buy it even if I didn't.

The next official WC game had darned well better have some sort of multi-player. As cheesy as it may sound, I'd like to play deathmatch against other pilots. I'd love to actually fly ON someone's wing for once. I'd also love to fly as two opposing teams in some sort cap ship action. A clash between two carriers, from far enough away that the carriers can't see each other. But everything with a real mind behind it. Cap ship drivers, turret gunners (maybe even turrets on bombers). All of it. Actual squadrons with actual leaders. Tactics! Skills! Sheer choreographed chaos! . . . okay, I'll calm down and be good. . .

ok, the idea of multiplayer game is cool, but im talking about the videos. Starkey is right for the most part, but i think that wc3,4 and five are better than 2 (i havent managed to play 1, it goes too fast, lol) not becuz of the graphics, but becuz of the video and their atmosphere. i think that the video adds depth to the game, and makes you think it's something else(for me, WC is not just a game). and how can you depict Maniac's or Vagabond's or Blair's character in cartoons? IMO it's impossible. and especially with those ridiculous 3D graphics that they make now(Freelancer for example) i think the game loses its character. they look like robots:p.

Actually, after the novelty of FMV wore off, I thought the videos took away from the gameplay. It quickly went from being a game with movie clips to being a movie with game interludes. Neat idea, but, by its nature, bound to fail.

Eh?
WC2 (SO2)´s Maniac was great, pretty scary, he has those bloody eyes, the demential face, the skull earing, he was pretty psycho and in some parts better than the WC3 or WC4 one.
Look at WCM people complain about Shaggy (i can´t remember his name) being Maniac, some say that the acting was bad or terrible. SO being a FMV doesn´t grants you a good game or a ''sentimental relation'' with the character.
I don´t care if the next WC game is cartoonish or FMV if it has a good story and/or (i prefer both) gameplay or even if itsn´t a space-sim at all

Yeah, some people think that this ruined WC4. On my turn, I like to see each game with its own special characteristics. In WCP, since the whole Nephilim story is still a mystery, you don´t need much talking and FMVs. But it would be very difficult to understand a complex plot such as WC4´s without those movies - which were nicely done, the best videogame FMV sequences I´ve ever seen, IMO.

Also, the gameplay in WC4 was actually better than WC3. Not much different I admit, but enough to live up to WC standards. Kinda like the gameplay improvement between WC1 and WC2.

Not really cartoons, though - 3D models with textures that are either photos of real people (Freyers for instance is JarJarThomas, the guy who did our space background graphics) or crazy faces I've come up with after mixing a few different famous people in Photoshop (Bradshaw's a good example of this). Not the best looking thing in the world, but it's what I could put together without having to buy any new software...

But yes, I see your point. Technology nowadays is enough to get some shitty acting out of CGI characters (or some decent acting, if you're on a high budget)... and personally, I think Freelancer had a good idea which was simply executed very poorly (like most of the game, if you ask me).

The problem with Freelancer's "actors" is that they don't have enough variety - I mean, there were what, like 3 different faces and 3 sets of hair for each gender of each faction? Was that really needed? How about 50 faces shared by most factions, and 10 special faces for factions which have specific needs? At least I wouldn't see two people who look exactly the same in a Navy base just because they're restricted to using the 3 "navy" faces. Sure, so maybe their CG character models had heads which couldn't be cut from their bodies (a big mistake in itself) and attached to other factions' uniforms... but it isn't that hard to at least use a few different textures on the same 3d model, and this can add much more variety than it may seem at first glance.

Aside from that, what really, really, really ruined Freelancer's character interaction part for me was the fact that it has the most incredibly dull and amateurish dialogue I've ever seen in a computer game, period. Sure, all conversations must follow a certain pattern, due to their random nature - but they didn't even try to disguise this pattern... it's left very clear to the players. Also, the sound files themselves had clear flaws. I've heard things like "Well,I Work f <pause> orthe Bounty Hunters" so often it made me turn the sound off after a couple of days playing the game. Really, how hard can it be to fix the timing of a couple dozen sound files? These are things which couldn't possibly have escaped the beta testers.

To sum it up, the problem with Freelancer characters wasn't the fact that they were real or not (for a bunch of 3d models, they had superbly fluid animations, IMO... a big thumbs up to whoever their animation guy is). The problem with Freelancer characters was that everyone in Freelancer looked the same, sounded the same and, in some cases, sounded way too artificial (due to a clear assembly of sentences from various sound files, which didn't always fit in too well). Just my 2 cents anyway.

Actually, the other day I found 33 cents on the sidewalk near the bus stop - yay for Standoff's newly increased budget!

I would like to see a C+C mod, but alas that would most likly not happen. I can not picture EA releasing their code for the game so some dedicated fans can model it on he wing commander universe. I think it would be intersting setting up a marine bas assaulting the kilrathi with different weapons, even calling in air support from a carrier. Hmm Starcraft would be a better frame for a mod just replace the aliens with kilrathi rename the marines and make it mor WC'ish. To bad I don't have any programming skills to speak of and even less free time.... oh well.

But yes I would buy any new Wing Commander product

Movies make it look prettier thats a given, but at least with cartoons the voice acting can be decent with movies u may have to get porn starts to play mechinics........ for example.

id buy a cartoonish wing commander, the first 2 games were fun in my oppinion, though i did like 3-4-5 better, i really only liked them more because of the sweet in cockpit graphics, though the movies did add a cool demension
