WCIII for PSX

I was in GameExchange yesterday, and happened across a copy of WCIII for PSX in the old BIG paper box. I never could get it to work right under DOS, so i nabbed it. I recently got a PS2 so i'm kinda interested now in acquiring WCIV as well, since i haven't had any luck with getting it to work under WinXP. My PS2 is at home and i'm at school, so i haven't been able to play it yet. I have a couple of questions.

1. can you use the analog stick(s) in WCIII? Be nice to fly with at least some sembiance of a 'stick.
2. what's the major differences as far as scenes and gameplay? I've been out of the WC Life far to long to remember them all, i used to be able to do most of'em from memory...

3. Are there any other realeased on PSX other than WCIII AND WCIV?
4. Any other recommendations on some good PSX/PS2 games?

I wish they'd rerelease KS in some way shape or form, PC or PS, hell, with DVD tech they could probably put KS, WCIV, and WCP/SO on one dual layer or double sided disc...

Anyways, thanks for any answers guys. and yes, i have been stopping in from time to time.

I have Wc3 and wc4 psx version too.The analog stick works only with wc4.I know a few difference between the PC Version are You get a Hobbes explantion on CD 4 & all the 14 or so TCN New Briefs in WC3. In wc4 you can't go to Circe System and some of the cut scene were cut.

I thought the first Colony Wars game for PSX was a pretty good game. It didnt' have the depth to the story or the cut scenes. But the plot was decent and the actual gameplay was pretty cool. The briefings on the different types of fighters and capital ships are also pretty funny to listen to.

I like WC III and IV better. But if your looking for another space combat game for PSX, you might take a look at Colony Wars.

The second game in that series though, Colony Wars: Vengence was a big disappointment. There were no real improvements from the first, in fact some of the background info that helped you understand the overall game were missing. I think there is one more game in the series, but i haven't played it.

Other PSX games i liked: Driver, Gran Turismo, Gran Turismo 2, Metal Gear Solid, Silent Hill.
PS2 games: Gran Turismo A-spec, Metal Gear Solid II, Red Faction, Silent Hill II.

What kinds of games do you like?

WC3 for the PSX is a pretty good port, but the controls take some time to get use to. Scrolling through your VDUs is a pain.

The WC4 port to PSX is terrible. The graphics are muddled, the controls lack and doesn't have much going for it. Skip it, unless you're a completist and can find it in mint condition for $10.

Other PSX/PS2 Games?

Final Fantasy Tactics remains the greatest game I ever played and you can get the re-release for under $20 now.

The aforementioned Silent Hill is GREAT too, esp since its more of a thinking survival horror game than Resident Evil. RE is to a zombie shoot-em-up movie as Silent Hill is to The Shining.

SOCOM too. Um... The original Syphon Filter is fantastic; I liked it more than either of the Metal Gear games.

Zone Of The Enders 2 is great.

I have SoCom and now Half Life (I bought it with WCIII, forgot to mention that) I'll look at colony wars and MGS. I looked at the RE games, didn't see silent hill...i'm goin back to game exchange this weekend sometime probably, i'll look for some more then. i'm too broke to buy any, but i'm gonna at least look.

Nah, you've got it backwards -- WC3 for the PSX is the worst WC3 port (out of four or five total). The people porting it refused to change the game -- so it's got the same 3D graphics. Now, that's fine for the Win9x port or the Mac port, but the PSX can't handle it... you get long load times and an annoying slow-ness in combat. It doesn't support an analog stick, so you have the same painful controls that you suffer through in early SNES and Genesis WC ports...

WC4 PSX cuts a lot of stuff from WC4 PC, but taken individually it's a lot more fun a game on the PSX. It's quicker and easier to get into. If you can get your hands on one of Sony's dual-analog flight sticks, the controls are amazingly fluid.

OK, now I'm conflicted.

I could get WC for PSX and play them (and actually play them, rather than watch the movies like I did with WCIV because I can't play it), but then I have this very nice flightstick for my PC sitting idle... ah decisions decisions. I wonder if my local EB has a used copy around.

If it's a USB stick you might be able to use it if you got a PS2. According to my halflife book, PS2 supports most Logitech and MS Keyboards, Mice and Sticks...Don't ask, you probalby get rudimentry use, but that's waht hte manual says, i'll post my findings of whether or not it works this weekend when i get home to where my system is.

Hey LOAF, long time no speak. Anyway, question: will the updated PSX engine that is used in the PS2 give more playable/faster load times in WCIII? Has this been tested? It will be friday night/saturday morning, but i'm curious as to if you've seen it yourself?

Hey -- I've played WC3 on the PS2 and haven't noticed any increase in quality at all... and I've been quite anal about getting the best system for the job for my WC computer setup :) Ended up sticking with one of those tiny PSOnes...

Yeah, theres a good amount of slowdown, but to me, thats synonymous with WCIII to begin with. I played it for the first time on a 486/80 and the load times took quite some time.

The lack of analog is a serious detraction though.

As much faster as the WCIV port is, the graphics are too muddied and blurred for me to enjoy it.

The third one is Colony Wars: Red Sun. It takes place at the same time as Vengeance, and you play as a merc pilot. Actually, it remembers me a bit of Privateer! It's interesting that, as a merc, you can fight for both sides of a conflict! :Þ One day, Unisoft hires you to raze a Dirty Warriors base, the next one, you're escorting a DW tank squadron as they assault a Unisoft base! Funny.

The only problem is that it's too easy... Most enemy fighters are WAY too fragile.

Actually, has anyone tried any of the PSX emulators out there? Last time I did, it worked out quite well (and decent quality - some of them upsample the resolution, so textures look worse, but runs at a decent resolution).

And quite possibly, no slowdowns too :).

If your looking for good PSX Games.Resident Evil series is the best of all time.Four different Games in the series on the PSX.Although the RE1 Gamecube Version is a thoudsand times better.

The Third Colony Wars game. It's easy the Colony Wars series is way to hard to get the right stroyline ending.I can only get to the last Plot mission in CW3 where you and Diva try to steal a Pirate Mission Decoder.

I disagree, in my opinion Silent Hill for playstation, and then Silent hill 2 for PS2 are better than the Resident Evil games. The resident evil games are more of a simple shoot the monsters game. Silent Hill has offers a lot more in terms of mood and atmosphere.

Resident Evil is like a cheesy B movie you see on cable late at night. Silent Hill, on the other hand is true horror game that leaves you wondering whats waiting in the darkness that you can't see.

If your looking for another solve the puzzles and kill the bad things game, go with Resident Evil. If your looking for something different, give Silent Hill a try.

Ck9791, all the things you don't like about Resident Evil is extactly why I like it.I've been a wacked out RE Fan since It's intial release on March 22nd 1996 and I will be til the day I day.

Everyone has a right to their Opinion.

Fair enough Raptor Leader. We all don't have to like the same things and have the same tastes. If we did, the world would probably be a lot duller.

I have both WC III and IV for the PSX, it's a bit anyoing that you don't get cockpit frames in these versions. I also have all three of the Colony Wars Series, which I thought was very good.

ok i know this has nothing to do with the thread, and I'm positive its been posted before.
I played the 3DO version of WC3 and noticed that in the bar,you can see the current status of the war on t.v. every now and then.

but on the KS version it never comes up at all whats up with that?
