WC4 The Price Of Freedom help needed with controls

Carmageddon

Spaceman
Hi :)
I got copy of the game many years ago from a friend I am no longer in touch with,
The full version of 4 cds (yes, original if some wonder  ).

Anyway, it was laying around for a long time, and for some reason (~~~, I duno why), I decided to try and play it :)

So, I installed it, encoutered problems running it here on Win XP SP2 laptop, so I googled, and it seems to work fine with the DOSBox solution.. a bit slow though, but if I add faster speed than the 20,000 cycles, it starts to go slow again...

Anyhow, my problem is with flight controls - there seems to be no place where I can redefine, or check what are the buttons to do things like fire, lock, cycle targets, afterburner etc etc.

I was wondering if anyone can be kind enough to post scan of the keys layout from the manuals? Googling for this info was not fruitful :(

Thanks!

EDIT: I'd appreciate a quick reply, noting the main controls so I can at least do couple basic missions, until someone posts something more thorough.

Here's the link to the quick reference card. You can check for game manuals on the CIC main page under resources https://www.wcnews.com/manuals.shtml .

Also, if you hit ctrl + o you can go in the options which will give you basic commands. You cannot, however, remap them in the game.

Also, if you wish to play it under windows XP. Change the compatibility to Win95 and download the patch available here. The URL for the file section is this : https://www.wcnews.com/files.shtml

edit : 8 minutes, how's that for service?

Thanks a lot, will that patch affect anything else than the game?

Well when I installed my copy a few weeks ago the movies were choppy and the gameplay was quirky at best. It smoothed everything out. As far as it affecting something else than the game.. i woudln't think so...

uhm, I just tried to install that Win95 patch, but it doesnt work, when I try to launch the install.bat via cmd, I see this:
Code:
Exiting INSTALL :

Please run down to your local software store and BUY it! :)

I tried to do them both from the extracted dir, and copying its contect to the WC4 dir.

EDIT: Btw the link to the quick reference card shows that I can use mouse to align ship and fire the secondary weapons, but in fact it doesnt work at all :( mouse does nothing for some reason.

never mind, all works perfectly and fast now! :)
Thanks a lot!

Except still the mouse cant be used for control :(
And I cant find in the manuals info how to fire missiles... or is it only possible to fire them all at once along with the blasters?

Heh, I thought WC4 was on 6 cd's.

The PC version has 6 CDs... The PSX version of WC4 has only 4 and is essentially abbridged.

There is 6 cds, I bet that Carmageddon didn't get the full package.

The PC version is 6 CDs, and the Playstation version is on 4.

The options menu is accessible by pressing ALT+O. I don't believe it gives you any information about keyboard commands.

You must go into the options menu while in flight and select mouse control, save the options and return to the game. The enter key (or right mouse button) fires missiles.

That's how DOSBox works. Once you exceed a certain number of cycles, your processor cannot keep up. If you return to using DOSBox, you can get around this by enabling the dynamic CPU core option in dosbox.conf.

Okay... I didn't know that. Well I did think of the possibility after I posted, but I didn't bother to edit. Thanks for the explanation.:)

If he has the psx version... then im utterly confused.

I remember messing around in the options and was able to get some info on what key did what. I'm not sure what's with my obsession with the ctrl key either but thanks for the save.

Thanks for the responces, never seen a community so dedicated and fast to reply on a game, especially that old!

Indeed it is 6 cds, I just missed 2 since they are 'hidden' inside the fat box ~~~...

I also finished the game, however most of the missions could only be done on the easiest level, otherwise its impossible to aim the guns (except the limited number of missiles) at the enemy ships... how do you manage to pass this game even on the default medium difficulty?

I also noticed in various guides, that there is something called autoslide [\] or holding caps lock.
I understand its somehow used to fire the dumbfire missiles or something? I couldnt understand what it does.. I tried these buttons many times and turn or something, couldnt notice any diffrence in ship turning or any behaviour.

Thanks a lot guys! :)

It doesn't have anything to do with missiles.

Autoslide causes the ship to maintain its current speed and direction while you can change the viewing direction. This has mainly two uses:

a) Accellerate to full afterburner speed, then activate autoslide and release the afterburner. You will continue to use AB speed without using up any more fuel
b) Fly away from the enemy, activate autoslide, then turn around. You will still be flying into the old direction, but can use your regular ship weapons on the pursuing enemies. Kinda like you are a flying turret.

It can also be done for dumb-fire (poor man's torp) flybye's like on that mission where there's jamming and you have to destroy the source of the said jamming. Pack a salvo of those and let it rip then you can IR them to death.

It takes practice to be able to aim the guns. There's people here who can play all the way through WC4 on the highest difficulty no problem. (I can, almost...)
