WC4-DVD questions

I already have WC4 on CD, but I recently saw a copy of WC4 on DVD at a local flea market. This item was a single disc (no manuals, boxes, or other discs). Not having a DVD drive, I'm not as familiar w/ these things as I should be, so I have some questions:

1) The most basic question, I guess, is: Does anyone know if the WC4-DVD product is supposed to be only a single disc?...

2) If no one can answer the above, lemme do some deductive reasoning. WC4-PC version takes up 6 (650 MB) CD's, which'd make a single DVD out to be betw. 3.6-3.9 GB capacity to contain the game. The copyright on this bad boy was '97. While there's several DVD formats out there (w/ several different capacities), does a date of '97 synch w/ any such standards (available then) that'd allow for 3.6-3.9 GB capacity?...

There are a number of different WC4 DVD's, but they all come on one disc. Is it single or dual sided? The dual sided DVD has MPEG-2 video, which looks a hundred times better than the CD version and weighs about 9GB I think. The single sided version is rarer, and has just the 6 CD's crammed on one side, no enhancements.

Thanx for the prompt reply!. Well, it was labeled "side a" and "side b", so it must be the 2- sided one you spoke of (cool!). And also, if you can tell me, what would be a reasonable price for them to ask for it?...

To be honest its not that good news :( I have the DVD and I can't play the video back :( Although since theres a little dll to play the video... maybe if we could replace the dll it could be made to work, who knows?

Whoooaahhh!... $250?... Check this out (you're gonna die): I bought it for $1.00!!... That's right: one crisp, green, dead George Washington! Unbelievable. All I can say is, thank God for flea markets. They obviously didn't know what they had!. This is a better deal than "1 800 call att". Woohoo!... Just goes to show ya how it pays to be patient & keep looking, I guess. Well maybe now I have the leverage I need--mayhaps I can trade it to someone for a copy of KS (And if not, maybe KS will turn up one o' these days at one of these local flea markets...) :D

No fair :( , I my countryu U only find non use stuff on the flee markect, plz someone there buy me a WC4 DVD, i will pay it back, plz plz :D

Before DVD-ROM drives were common they often went for $5-10, but lately they've been hovering around $100 on ebay. Wait a while for the freaks to get theirs and they should come back down to around $20-30.

I got my wc4 DVD with Creative Labs Encore DXR2 card.It is dual sided, picture qaulity is near perfect but it only works with my DXR2 card.I tried to play it on my friends computer, but it wouldn't run.I think it was asking for some dll's,though.Oh,yes,BTW,did I mention that the movies look GREAT!!!:)

As far a I know you'll need a CL Dxr2 or Dxr3 card. The Dxr3 is suppose to be the Hollywood card with CL name on it. I upgraded from Dxr2 to Dxr3 and I believe the quality of the Dxr3 is better. CL said the Dxr3 will work with any DVD player. The newer ATI graphic cards may work since the use a hardware DVD decoder. All other graphic cards use a software DVD decoder. You can get a Dxr card from CL web site or Ebay. Also if you get a CL DVD player the Dxr3 card comes with it.

Which is all nice that the dxr and drive are still available, but does it come with WC4 DVD?

The only reason I would be buying the kit is for WC4 DVD - I would probably just let the card and drive sit there and gather dust (especially since my Pioneer A303S and GeForce2MX do a better job than the two).

I don't believe so.

Your wrong about that. Read the following review
http://www.3dspotlight.com/reviews/hardware/hollywood-plus/index.shtml Remember the Dxr3 is the same as the Hollywood card. Hardware decoder are better the software decoders. It's always good to has documentation to back up ones point of view.

A GeForce2 can do hardware motion compensation, but not IDCT, which still has to be done in software. Hardware decoder cards do IDCT also, as does the Radeon.

Here another review. The Hollywood/Dxr3 card has better performence and quality.

I can post at least ten reviews all stating the same thing. I have a Hercules Geforce MX 2 card and I've seen the difference with and without Dxr3 card. You may be happy with what you have. But when you seen just how good the hollywood card is you'll just do know what you are missing.

Jetlag have you tried WC4 DVD with the Radeon card? Does it work with it?

Hrm, I'm a little confused over that one... I had always thought it did full Hardware decoding - just found out, through both the GeForce 2MX specs and other channels that it does do hardware MPEG1 and MPEG2 acceleration, but for the most it's done at a software/driver level.

However, I still don't see why everyone insists hardware decoders are so much better - I've seen no noticable difference with a hardware decoder, or my Viper V330, Viper V550, Viper V770 or Tornado2MX - on both a P2-350 and Athlon 1GHz CPU. Seems like a waste of money to me :D

I understand your confusion.:( Hardware and software each have there advanages and disadvanages. The main thing is prices. Read this guide.
