I picked up my copy of Wing 1 and I am having some trouble on the Escort mission in McAuliffe, the one where you see Buhrak for the first time. Anyone got any tips on getting both myself and the Drayman through alive?

Your number one priority is to stay close to the ship you are escorting. In my experience, aces tend to run away after taking damage. If I'm thinking of the same mission you are, I think he's leading a group of salthi, and you are in a scimitar. A scimitar can tear up a salthi pretty well, and salthi tend to run. Hit Bhurak, and the moment he starts to run, attack the other salthi. When they bug out, they aren't a threat to the drayman or yourself. Its tough letting an ace out of your sights, but sometimes it is something you have to do.

edit: I just remembered, the cic has a guide section. Check out https://www.wcnews.com/guides/wc1mcauliffe.shtml. Good luck!

All of my experience with the Aces in WC1 pretty much encouraged me to avoid them first if I was on an escort mission.

Aside from thier running away they acted pretty much like other fighters with more armor and shields.

The standard approach is to damage Burhak quickly, which will drive him off, and then go after whichever Salthi your wingman isn't attacking. The transport will never be in danger, provided you route Starkiller quickly.

How I usually do it is to save at least 1 HS. I afterburn to meet Burhak, whip around onto his tail, fire off a salvo to knock down his shields, and then fire a missile off. That usually does it--he'll burn away and usually retreat at that point. Then quickly figure out which other Salthi is not being attacked by your wingman, and afterburn over to him. Assuming that your wingman is alive and the transport is in decent shape (i.e. you got the Krants before it showed up), you should have enough time.

Don't worry about Burhak getting away. He shows up again in SM1, I believe? and you get another crack at him.

I also had luck, once, with taunting Burhak, and then going after the two wingman. He concentrated on me, but didn't manage to kill me, and we got both his wingmen. Then I took my time and managed to actually kill him. Don't know if this is a repeatable strategy, though...

I've always played out that mission like this:

When you arrive at Nav 1 use your missles to nobble a couple of the krants quickly (Save one Dart DF though) , Paladin is pretty good, so order him to break and attack and most times I've found he will take down a krant or at least damage it badly so it is an easy target, take the remaining two Krants out as fast as you can, so focus on the Paladin isnt shooting at.

On the way back to the 'claw:

Bhurak will burn straight in on you, go for the head on engagement with him, he won't dodge, so fire off a Dart DF to bang his ship up, then a few mass driver volleys will finish him off as you fly past, with a bit of practice, you'll blow him away every time before he gets more than a couple of shots off at you (which your shields can take).
After that, chew the salthi's up as fast as possible, hopefully, you & Paladin can knock the remaing four down before the Drayman takes any critical damage
