I just played the Kilrathi Saga version of WC3, and it holds up amazingly. Although I fondly remember playing the original 1 & 2, the graphics do not hold up as well. Has anyone used the WC3, 4, or 5 Mission Editors to recreate the WC 1 & 2 missions in the newer games? The animations and audio clips from 1 & 2 could also be linked in, with the spaceflight graphics, and sound from one of the more modern games. 1 & 2 were truly amazing in their time, and updated to one of the newer games, we could play them all over again, like it was the first time.

Welcome to the board. While I totally agree with you, wouldn't it make sense to create some new gameplay based on the games instead of a conversion?

For me it is pretty simple. What would I prefer: A game with completely new content like UE or Standoff or a remake of WC1?...

The poll options were rather limited. I don't want a remake, and who wouldn't want to replay the originals? (I fixed your vote Karl)

As I've said many times, remakes just aren't the best way to go. People always add "improvements" and leave out features that they didn't like. And then all sorts of work goes into this thing that's purporting to be made in the spirit of the original but has all sorts of arbitrary changes that some fans don't like. The same amount of effort can go into a fan project that builds something new and creative instead. Then nobody has to be annoyed by what the dev team didn't get right, because the entire project is exactly what it's supposed to be.

WC1&2 are still truly amazing games today. I'm in the middle of replaying through them again right now and they're better than ever.

I'm afraid i'm with Chris on this one. Although the Privateer Remake actually reminds me of WC after the 1.1 update, theres still a few bizarre "fixes". I like standoff because it show you the story of WC2 from another guys perspective, which is far more intresting then the old story with new graphics.

A "classic" car with an new engine, new electronics, and all kinds of gadgets isn't a "classic" anymore. I'd either drive an old car as it is, without fancy new stuff, or buy a new one that gives me new experiences in technology and form.
And the same holds true for games. Quit remaking something that's good on its own.

I would enjoy WC 1 & 2 updates in the Vision engine. So long as there aren't any major changes. I can understand if something needs to be changed to accomodate the engine in question otherwise it pulls the end product away from what originally was and had that made us fall in love with it.
The otherside to the equation is the engine in question. WC3 4 and Prophecy's engines are not always that easy edit. If they were as easy to add new stuff to as say BUILD then I would have done this long ago. So if your going to put that much sweat and tears into reviving the older games, particularly when we DOSBox and KS available, wouldn't you rather put the effort into something new?

Hmmm. I don't think a remake is necessary. As long as I can get those games functioning, I have a blast. That and I think the WC3-4/Prophecy engines might take away from the overall effect of the game. I'm not sure what I am trying to say, but It wouldn't feel the same, ya know?

For me, part of the charm of WC1 was that you affected the outcome of the story they tried to tell -and- that there were so many little things that helped with the immersion. Seeing the joystick move on the screen with your own joystick movements was a neat little touch, for example, along with the 'eject' movie and the 'running through the corridors' animations.

Exactly.

Even though many of the remakes/new content are very well designed, they still replicate every little detail.

I vote for the remake, although my choice is probably more affected by the fact that I have never played the first two WCs. So for me to get into it retrospect, the game would have to look nicer.

Of course, this would not be much of a base to substantiate a remake--and I don't hope for one, either.

Say, didn't somebody else already get into doing a remake/conversion for WC1?

The engines are so different... A remake would have to make so many changes in terms of fighter´s quantities, mission balancing, etc. that the remake would be very different.

You want WC2 in the Vision engine? Go play Standoff, it´s the best mix between Wing Commander past and future!

I think is better to add some of the best WC1, Wc2 mission even Wc3 and WC4 mission as simulator mission of a new fan made Mod. like a "History missions" or something like that, where they can tell, "this are a recreation of the missions of the Vega campaigns so you can live the experience the pilots have on that time, we know that the mission may varied from the original but we make it the closes possible to the real one"

Oh, what a horrible fate you've suffered.

Well, Flight Commander is designed to let people do something just like that if I'm not mistaken. You're still doing it from a quasi-Vision engine standpoint, and so features available in each game varied. Recreating missions from several different games would be quite a bit of work to achieve real decent accuracy.

I agree with christ too, but i think it will be a cool Idea to do them on the sim, making a small note that the are a recration a not the real one

To be play Wing Commander 1 and 2 in new engine would be nice.
Even in a motion picture game would be very nice with the development of the CD-Rom and the release of 3, 4 and prophecy

Just because you can read fast doesnt mean you should type fast. Think about your posts for an extra second and it will do wonders, Dahan.

By the way, what the heck does "Even in a motion picture game would be very nice with the development of the CD-Rom and the release of 3, 4 and prophecy" mean?
