Hey,

does anybody know of a place I can find the dvd version of WC IV?
For years I kept replaying the original cd version and I am still in love with the game. I'd kill for the dvd...

Hum, bad news.
Well, I wasn't really looking for wc4 DVDs after I got mine, so I didn't get to see that. Too bad. She was a pretty good supplier.
 
WC4 DVD is one of the Holy Grails of games. Try E-Bay. It was made for the Creative Labs DVD player in the late 1990s. Too bad they did not mass produce WC4 DVD.

They did, they just didn't sell them in retail standalone. It's Prophecy DVD that didn't get mass produced. :(

Cause pretty much no one had a dvd-rom then much less set top dvd players (which costed 800-1000 dollars then). So pretty much everyone who had dvd drives were buying packages like creatives DXR2 kits... Incidently, it wasnt untill the last year or two that it has become fairly standard for new pc games to be released on DVD

On top of that, video cards didn't have the necessary components to properly display the video back then. Just try playing some high definition video on today's PCs. They won't be watchable on less than a 3 GHz machine in many cases. So WC4 DVD beat that by utilizing a special hardware assistance piece called the dxr card which routed the data and decoded it to relieve pressure on the rest of the system. WC4 DVD was specificially designed to need that decoder board to work, so a retail release would have been useless unless bundled with the hardware. So essentially, the bundle with the card, drive and game was the retail release of WC4 DVD and everything required to make it play. Now that our computers are more powerful, gulikoza has found a way to trick the game to play without the hardware board, but this wouldn't have been possible seven or eight years ago.

Dang it! They must have cheaped out on my drx2 bundle way back when. My WCIV-DVD came in an envelope with a clear window... not that nifty slipcase.
 
There were two different versions of the mpeg2 WC4 DVD, and at some point they included those nice covers. I'm not sure about when the break occurred.. maybe for the 5x encore kit.

Computers have come a long way even today. The top of the line a few years ago was a Pentium II at 400 mhz, not bad even today.

Okay.

The P2 400 was top of the line seven years ago, around when WC4 DVD came out.
