Tropical Storm Rita Advisory

===============================================

Getting worse now. More computer projections show that Southeast Texas will be affect by Rita as a major hurricane. I expect it as a Category 3, 4, or even 5. Bad situation.

Any validity behind the claim that these tropical storms are being brought about by increasing temperatures in the Gulf of Mexico (global warming)?

Global warming? If you mean since the mid 1600's, yeah. If it gets warmer than it was in the 1100's, 1200's and 1300's then I might say there's a problem. It was warm enough back then for there to be vineyards in England. Until that's possible again, I'd say we're not back up to normal temperatures yet.

I like how we have a "hurricanes are going to destroy Texas!" guy now. (Here's his post for Katrina.)

Wait, what's the opposite of like?

Interesting observation. My major is history with a specialty in the Plantagenet-Capetian-Hohenstaufen era. I never thought about that before!

Define "this way..." :)

Another hurricane, another evacuation, at least this time you can be sure people are paying attention. :)

By the way, we here in Southern California are having the strangest weather ever!

I was born in Charleston, South Carolina and lived on the east coast of the US from Baltimore, MD to Saratoga Springs, NY. I moved to California when I was eight. Since then I have seen thunder and lightning here a total of 4 times, a storm never lasting longer than one hour. We are currently in our 20th hour of a thunder storm!

Has the world turned upside down?

No. However the world HAS turned upside down when and if the Day after Tomorrow occurs. Both literaly and politically. Hurricane Katrina was very bad. This storm could just make that situation worse. The big question though is WHY DO WE AS THE HUMAN RACE LIVE WHEREVER AND PREFERABLY WHERE DISASTER CAN AFFECT US THE MOST?

...Because there's nowhere else to live? There are no disaster-free environments anywhere on earth. You don't get to choose between living in a disaster zone or living in safety - you only get to choose which kind of disasters you personally prefer to face.

Historically, New Orleans was one of the most strategically important cities in the United States; located at the mouth of the Mississippi, whoever holds New Orleans has a strangle-hold on the output of industries and farms all the way up to New York. That's why Jefferson was so eager to purchase it from Napoleon and why the Union was so quick to take the city during the Civil War.

Anyone who seriously cites the movie "The Day After Tomorrow" or the events within said movie has only slightly more credibility than the head of the (now defunct) Black Panthers talking about racial harmony.

Other movies that will cause trouble for us when and if they become real include Alien, Aliens and Jersey Girl.

You forgot Big. Or Mazes And Monsters, which ever comes first.

They have it all wrong, the real threat is global cooling:

Yeah. Notice that in that 1975 article they talked about global cooling causing more tornadoes. Always with the "It's worse now than it's ever been!"

Same amount of tornadoes as in, say, 1250, but they weren't recorded because there was no one around to do 24 hour news coverage.;)

Personally, I like that bit where they admit that they actually have no data and no idea what they're talking about ("Our knowledge of the mechanisms of climatic change is at least as fragmentary as our data, [...] in many cases we do not yet know enough to pose the key questions."). If only some of the "global warming" idiots were willing to admit that, the world would be a much, much better place.
