Time To Take Transport Tallies (January 28, 2008)

Today we're asking what kind of transports you had the best time escorting. There's some great options out there. Some people might pick the giant Monolith with its heavy turret guns and massive shields (were you escorting it or was it escorting you?). Armada players might have vivid memories of protecting their resource-packed Belleau Woods from Kor-larhs and Gorans. Still other Wingnuts might go for the classic Drayman that they managed to save over and over from swarming Kilrathi raiders. Due to the number of choices, assume derivatives such as Mark II variants are grouped in with their original design. Which is your favorite?
Will we see our third Wing Commander release in three years in 2008? A plurality of WC fans had their doubts, but with all the excitement that EA Replay and Wing Commander Arena generated, don't forget that this could be a record year for community activity. Look no further than our recent fan project nominees for a reminder of the awesome Wing Commander things cooking right now. And keep an eye on the front page for news throughout the year. No matter which option you picked, there's sure to be tons of surprises in the year ahead.

What kind of year will 2008 be for WC?

Belleau Woods are utterly useless to their own defense and they only take a few rounds to go up in flames.

The Monolith was less like a transport and more like a destroyer or even cruiser that happened to have a lot of cargo space (it's certainly better than many of the pirate cruisers in P2). One of P2's best features is that the turrets on cap ships are actually dangerous. I wish they wouldn't shoot their turrets at missiles other than torpedoes. It's really frustrating and they haven't got a snowballs chance in hell of hitting them.

I haven't played P2 since I lost half the discs about 3 years ago, but I remember the Monolith being a beast.

never played Privateer 2(just got the discs off ebay so hopefully soon I'll play it)
I say freetrader. I jsut replayed WC2 and maybe it's beause the freetrader was usually paladin so maybe it was scripted to be able to take more punishment but I never had to worry about it getting destroyed while I was taking care of the fighters

same can't be said for the WC1 drayman or the Clydesdale in WC2
the draman in Priv1 was a decent ship

Hm...

As for the pure and massive firepower... I agree with the choice of that Monolith. But my voice is for the Ilia...

Why?

The price. 390 credits for 750 tons!!!

The ogan? 240 credits (-160) for 550 (-200)... but only one turret.
The ilia MkII? 630 credits (+240!!!) for 900 (only 150 tons more!), 2 Turrets...

Often I don't find enough stuff to fill a monolith, leaving space in the bays empty... and so I use often the old Ilia for good.

The Priv Drayman is pretty heavily armed and I can't recall having lost to many in my journeys in the Gemini Sector.

On the other hand, it's not as easy to put a price tag on a ship that can not only haul cargo, but cover your ass, figuratively speaking, as well. If nothing else, given the difficulty of running away from the umpteen zillion enemies that keep springing up, you might as well stick around a ship that can put the hurt on bad guys when your attention is focused on someone else.

It is? Doesn't it only mount two forward firing Meson guns which are mostly worthless because of the low manoeuvrability?
Though I think the defense is not too bad.

IIRC it also has some missiles as well. I should have put heavily armored instead as that's what I was trying to get at.

Nope, no missiles on the Privateer Drayman. I occasionally found them to be deadly when they were in groups of four, though - they could box you in and make up for their lack of maneuverability...

I don't know if I ever encountered 4 Draymans at once. And of course, I mostly was on their good side, so that I don't have much experience shooting them down. I never really followed the Pirate route in Priv. That's the next thing on my list.

Ahh, just did a quick ships check, I seem to have confused the loadout for the Paradigm and the Drayman. Yeah I know real smooth.

Well, Paladin's freetrader is invincible in a lot of WC2 missions, so in that respect I suppose it's the easiest to escort.
Not counting indestructable ships, the monolith is the best hands down imo, it's the only cargo ship that is better than some wingmans. In some P2 missions u could wonder who's protecting who ;)

I would have to say the Bonnie Heather. Leaving the invincible thing aside:

(1) It looked really cool (I really loved the Free Trader design)
(2) Unlike the Draymans, or Clydesdales, or WC3/4 Transports, Free Traders (and especially the Bonnie Heather) sometimes managed to actually shoot Kilrathi fighters down.
(3) Cool name
(4) Paladin kicks ass.

Never played Privateer 2, so I couldn't comment on those, and always thought the Privateer version of the Drayman looked kind of dumb and poorly rendered...
