The Fat Man

I have a question regarding the composer of the majority of Wing Commander 1 and 2's music, George Sanger. As I understand it, his nickname was 'The Fat Man'.

Was this an ironic reference to a man who was in fact skinny, an accurate description of Sanger, or something completely different?
