TCS Devereaux?

Seventh Part of the Seal
Ok if we take a look at some of the ships throughout not only the WC universe, but other sci-fi series, the ships are appropriately named.

EG

Prison Ship: TCS Alcatraz
Science ship: TCS Tsiolkovsky

So is the Devereaux actually named after Angel, and if so, why is it a science vessel? She wasn't a scientist she was a highly regarded warrior by both the Kilrathi and the Confederation, with that shouldn't the Devereaux have been a destroyer or cruiser?

First, we have no info on if it's named after the same Deveraux. If so though, The devereaux was doing research on the leftover bits of Kilrah. It was Angel's sacrifice that made Blair's temblor bomb run possible. So perhaps it's a reference to what is possibly a specific mission detail that the Devereaux was commissioned for (regarding Kilrah).

I think you already mentioned the specific connecting detail in the players/developers' mind. The survey and prep work Colonel Devereaux did made it possible to destroy Kilrah. Years later, the TCS Devereax is there inspecting the remains. There's not really information for much futher in-universe justification.

I never liked this kind of argument; yes, you can make it in a void... but the intent is clearly there (like everyone who insists Star Trek's Enterprise is named after something obscure instead of the aircraft carrier).

I agree with you here Loaf. I think its pretty clear what the intent was. To me, you could make the same argument when Ben Sisko references the USS Sarek.

"Come on, we all know who it was named after!"

To me there was never any doubt surrounding the intention to reference Colonel Deveraux, although the Wing Commander Universe was reasonably large by the time Prophecy was released, I'm not even vaguely aware of any other character sharing her second name. Having said that, my knowledge of the Wing Commander universe is inferior to that of the 'hardcore' following, so if anybody knows of another Deveraux (perhaps a relative of Angel mentioned in the series) it might be an interesting point to add to the debate.

What I find particularly interesting, is that the TCS Deveraux was destroyed surveying the remains of the very planet where her namesake was slayed...Almost like the Spirit of Deveraux had returned, destined to be drawn to the place where she died and endlessly explore the lonely expanse of shattered Kilrah.

I am sure Jeannette Devereaux would insist on her name being spelt correctly... although I will concede that it's not even spelt consistently throughout the sources, if I recall correctly. ;)

Yeah... now that you mention it I have seen it spelled differently in a couple places!
