Oggy

Rear Admiral
Greeting Pilots!

Its that got to the point that my old XP (Yes, ancient I know haha, there is a story there) rig just isn't cutting it anymore and I am looking at building a new one
Any ideas on specifications for running Star Citizen at a decent frame rate and detail?
Cheers,

Oggy

Hi there Oggy.

Normally, I would start with a list of recommendations based on budget but someone at the RSI forums has done a damn fine job enough I'm willing to quote his post.

CynicalCyanide at RSI has worked up a really awesome guide in shopping for PC hardware.

This is actually a worthwhile guide, so much they stickied it. Give it a shot and if you have other specific questions we can likely digest them here.

Well, I have pressed the button and ordered the parts, really excited, I haven't built a new PC for about 5 years.

I've gone for a i7 4770 Haswell
An Asus Z87 Sabertooth
A WD 750GB Black
16 GB corsair Dominator RAM
and a Nvidia 770 2GB

I am going to reuse my Antec 1200 case and the Corsair PSU I have as that's only 2 years old, same monitor and all that jazz,
I've got Windows 7 with a an upgrade to 8.1 if I want it, so I think I got all the bases covered.

I really wanted a SSD, but the budget wouldn't stretch, damn!

Hope you don't mind me asking, how much are you paying out for that haul? Looks like a nice setup and I'm tempted to do something similar.

If I may ask, which seller did you go through? Someone like Newegg or TigerDirect?

I have reused my Antec Case and Power Supply and have keyboard, mouse and monitor already.

@Whistler, most of the kit has come from Scan.co.uk who I used about 5 years ago, never had any problems with them. Overclockers sold the cooler I wanted, and a few bits came from a local PC shop to where I live

Its not at the bleeding edge of technology, but its a robust build.
my budget was about £1000.00 so I blew it by about 75 pounds, hence no SSD, but I might go back and add that at a later date.

Well, after the wrong HDD turned up I sent t back and got the correct one.

All put together, some fun and shenanigans with the old Antec 1200 case, I had to cut the clips that hold the side fan in place and remove it, to get the H80i in, but other than that seems to have gone smoothly. Performance is outstanding compared to my old rig, but then It would be, comparing a five year old rig to a new one.

All set for Star Citizen now.

If you want a decent road test, get hold of GTA IV, even if it's not your thing. To run it at max settings take a monster PC even by recent standards.

I have bought Farcry 3 to give it a go,
Thanks for the tip on GTA IV, I'll see if I can pick it up

Let us know how she handles! I'm actually a bit jealous, I've long wanted to build a high-end PC, but as things are I just can't justify that kind of outlay. Time to start saving I suppose.

well, she is light on her feet and nimble, with plenty of fire power!

Seriously, its outstanding, its a long time since I have been able to whack everything up to High or Ultra settings.
Far cry 3 is pretty good, I have it on Very High (Ultra thrashes it too much) the only complaint I would have would be the UPlay shenanigans I had to install, but that's sorted now and its pretty unobtrusive once you've tweaked the settings. Downside of digital download I guess, I have Steam, Origin and UPlay now :(

Steam is the better one of the three imo (but then I am biased, been with it since the start).

Great performance for Rhino 5 and VRay 1.5 (which was part of the reason for the upgrade) far in excess of my laptop, which is no slouch.
