This is a silly, stupid question but it is bothering me.
Whats the purpose of the big Runway in the Bengal Class strike carrier outside of the ship?
I mean , that during the takeoff or the landing they dont need it...
At least not so big..Its outside the ship,it doesnt have fighters on it (I mean to store like the Victory or other confed ships where the runway is inside and it has stuff on it).

I dont know if I described it well,Its hard to say exactly what I mean in English...:)

I understand what your saying, and to tell you the truth I don't think it served any real purpose. The Concordia had outside runways too.

Maybe it's to allow fighters that come in too hot a place to slow down? I'm thinking Rosie in the WC movie...something like that...there might be cables there to catch a fighter just like on carriers today...

I dunno...the real reason is Roberts probably wanted to make it look more World War 2-ish...

Thats What I thought.Me (TigersClaw:D ) and other ships disigned like that, cause they look like ww2 and nowdays carriers.
But I got to find some good reasons , even if ChrisRoberts didnt think about, cause everything must be Perfect in Wc univerce :)

I dont want to bother you ,but can you answer me ?
:(

hope didnt forget that THREAD , so I m reminding you:)

If nobody has answered yet, maybe they don´t know the answer (as I don´t). You have to be patient...

You only posted 10 hours ago... and you've had responses, if not answers... it isn't soon enough to start whining about not getting answers :)

I would assume they're there for approach. It's nice and easy to line up the approach if you've got big runways with lines going down the center.

Heh... that runway slowed Rosie down a tad too much to be helpful, though ;)

I agree with TC. It's probably a matter of making the approach easier, perhaps coupled with the carrying over of old procedures, even though they're not that much needed anymore. Kind of like wings on fighters that aren't capable of flying within an atmosphere.

Wings are used to hold thrusters and stabalizers so ships can get more torque and rotate more easily. It's mentioned in Freedom Flight.

Don't they also have the aerodynamic control surfaces that Bear used in End Run as well? Which gives them another reason to be there - they're meant to function in atmosphere as well as space, unlike the WC3 Ekapshi.

It depends on the ship. Many can function in atmosphere while lacking such surfaces.

Redundancy and fuel conservation, perhaps? Dont have to use juice to manuver in-atmosphere if youve got ailerons.

About the carriers... it seems that the designs that *had* runways were all designed as not-entirely-carriers: the Claw was a Strike Carrier with a LOT of big guns, and the Concordia WAS a big gun with fighters since they had the extra space. Easy enough to convert one of those big flat surfaces into a runway and hangar. The "pure" carriers, on the other hand, were simply runways down the middle of a hangar bay. I dont comment on the Snakeir carriers, since I dont know where exactly the bays and runways are on that thing.

There has to be some advantage to a runway, other than the "looks cool" part. Perhaps that it protects half the arc of the hangar from attack and kamikaze (the tube-ships could have the hangar entrance hit from 90 degrees off centerline) or that its another place to put defensive lasers and tractor beams?

Eh, the Confederation Class wasn't really a big gun that they put fighters on because they had extra space. It's primary role seemed to be more as a carrier that, quite handily, had a rather large gun on the front.

OK, I just wanted to remind you the Thread, maybe you didnt see it or something.:)

Thanx for the replies:p
