Hello,
I'm new to this forum, stumbled across it looking fo help getting WC3 to run in XP or I'd been here a lone time ago:)

Is there a place to go to get directions on getting WC3 to work right with joystick, sound, ect? I tried DosBox and VDMS and straight compatability settings.

Thanks for your help

Welcome to the forums.

There are a number of threads about getting various WC games to run in XP in the Tech Support section of the forums : http://www.crius.net/zone/forumdisplay.php?f=3

For example:

For us to diagnose your specific problem though we need a little more info about your system setup and exactly what steps you took to get it to run properly.

I'm assuming you have the DOS version (since you tried dosbox) though. Are you using Dosbox ver. 0.65? THe dynamic core option is much more stable now so turning that on should aleviate any speed/ framerate issues you may have had.

Also, dosbox defaults the sound setup to IRQ 7 so you need to watch for that while setting up the sound.

If windows is detecting your joystick, make sure no other usb game controlers are plugged in before starting dosbox other than the one you intend to use (THis is a windows bug that affects a wide assortment of games including brand new ones because of the way directx works I assume...) Once in the game you may have to turn it on inflight. Once in space, hit alt-o and choose joystick as your controler and don't forget to click "save settings."

ok I got it running, but with a few problems

can't find the dynamic core option in Dosbox 0.65

my sidewinder joystick is all over the place

and it is running very herky jerky on my P4 2.66g with 2g ram and a ATI radeon 9600xt vid card

and VDMS can't find the CD even when installed with VDMS

You need to enable it in the Dosbox.conf file.

Make sure it's calibrated in windows first... There is a calibration think in WC3 but if that doesnt work then it's also possible that it may not be compatible. I seem to remember this coming up before in the tech support forum

That should be plenty to run it smoothly as long as the dynamic core is enabled. Even with out it, you would need to adjust the cycles to a point where it is close to smooth. A bit of experimenting would be needed to determine the right value for your PC however without the dynamic core getting it to play smooth is only possible on very powerful PCs. (though you shouldnt have any trouble with WC1,2 or Privateer)
