Please consider the following:
Privateer had turrets available to some craft. However, to operate them, you would have to switch to the turret view. I have a couple ideas to bring this to something "nifty"...
1. Hire crew. You can hire a man to operate a turret, possibly putting him under contract. He would get a percentage of your mission pay.(this would be similar to the Privateer 2 pay structure) These guys would vary in skill, but you would be able to hire them for a certain number of missions(and drop them off at the location of the last mission)... and you could re-sign them from there. Perhaps even an experience structure could be put in place... (the more missions the co-pilot has run (and each one would have a semi-random number to start with), the more accurate his shots may be, and the more conservative he is on using your precious gun-power. (mission one, random spraying, constant fire at any craft in view, only occasionally hitting. mission twenty, accurate shots, always leads targets correctly. never opens fire until he's sure he has a shot.) Their contract could go up in base pay/percentage based on thier experience... and have a loyalty/greed factor in there to boot. If the gunner gets greedy, he may want a higher rate next run.
2. Turret AI. This could operate on a similar principle to the co-pilot, however... the device would be a buy-n-fly device. Pay once, and go. Never improves on it's own. (There can be AI upgrades available to make the tracking system more accurate, and the AI never functions with the base-line radar because all blips are grey, it can't tell them apart)... this could lead to interesting combinations, such as a fully upgraded AI and a fully upgraded radar having the ability to have the AI gun down missiles.
Could be neat, indeed!
