Our new poll asks which Wing Commander game introduction is your favorite. There's a lot to choose from, so we're just looking at the main series titles here. Even narrowed down this much, it's a hard decision. Hopefully these images jog your memory to help you pick just one.

  • WC1 - In the distant future...
  • WC2 - Assault on K'Tithrak Mang / Abandoning Ghorah Khar
  • WC3 - Angel meets Thrakhath / Assignment to the Victory
  • WC4 - Blair recalled to duty
  • Prophecy - Nephilim enter Kilrathi Space
  • Secret Ops - Launch of the Cerberus
  • The Kilrathi Saga - Trilogy highlights

  • The old poll asked which missile lock tone is the best. When the question was asked recently at Crius.net, the results were almost flipped opposite. Wing Commander 3 & 4 won on the front page, but the piercing shriek of Armada's tone won at the forums. If you've never heard Armada's tone, hurry up and go grab a copy of the game!

Which game has your favorite missile lock tone?

WC3. The loss of your second carrier, Angel missing in action, Luke Skywalker - what could be a better setup to a great game?

I also choose WC3 for several of the same reasons.

Although the KS trailer is a very very close second. I remember everybody spending hours on 28.8 modems to download it for the first time. Such a great sequence.

If you're talking numbers, WC3 has the highest number of views(from my ongoing YouTube recordings) and seems the most popular. But that was not my vote. My vote was for the intro from WC2.

I was struggling between WC2 and WC3 - the WC2 intro was brilliant for it's time (especially with speech) but WC3 had the most cinematic experience to me - still a tough decision but WC3 got my vote.

I went for WC1. It was... pure. All those remaining sequences (KS excepted) were lengthy, in most cases divided into several scenes, and had a lot deal of information to get across. None of that is a problem as such, but it makes them less memorable, in my opinion.

The WC1 intro was, for lack of a better word - iconic. It was short, it got to the point, and it was clearly separated from the rest of the game. It was basically nothing more than an animated title sequence. In the other games, it was hard to tell at which point the intro ends and the game begins (e.g. - is the "ten years later" bit in the WC2 intro still a part of the intro, or is it the game already? Or how about the WC4 intro, where you actually make choices during the intro itself - is that already the game?). WC1 just plain stood out. It's one of those intros that you can watch pretty much every time you start the game, and it's short enough not to get boring.

Hmmm....
I liked all of them very much.

But the hardest decision was between WC3 and WC1

I vote for WC3. WC1 is the close 2nd. Then Prophecy, then WC4 and WC2.

WC 1 for me, that opening with the orchestra (even though it's probably not the intro per se), the text, the chase scene and then the title, all along with the most fitting music I ever experienced, WC 1 just has a simple and yet great intro.

WC 2 is second because of the great voices..."Rise grandson." - "Speak of your plans not of your toys!" - "Excellent! Without him the Terrans cannot stand against us!", I simply love the WC2 Kilrathi emperor.

Its style is sort of reflected in the Privateer and Armada intros as well. They all sort of invoke that same simple feeling while providing a satisfying introduction.

I never thought about it but I agree with you that Armada's intro is similar to WC1's though Privateer is a lot more elaborate so I don't see them as similar. Though granted, it's a fight between ships.

Priv's intro was also great - though I always wished a single laser would be as powerful as in that intro. :)
