Scimitar fans

Really, the gameplay balance isn't so much that the Scimitar is slow as it is that the Raptor, which has stronger shields and armor and weapons, is FASTER than the Scimitar. If the Raptor had a speed of 320/1000 instead of 400/1200, then the Scimitar would have been marginally faster and felt more balanced on the light/medium/heavy scale.

Well, by WC1 standards, the Raptor is crazy fast for a heavy fighter. Amazingly fast compared to the Gratha and Jalthi. The only Kilrathi fighter that the Raptor is slower than is the Salthi. The Raptor deserves a fan thread of its own.

I never got the sense that the Confed fighters of WC1 made any real attempt at balancing on the light/medium/heavy scale. The Rapier and Raptor were "reward" ships and as such, being assigned to either was a near-total upgrade compared to flying a Scimitar or Hornet.

The Hornet is actually the best ship in the game (EDIT : I mean in a dogfight - it's of course not the best escort ship) against most enemies... Once you learn how to fly it, you're almost impossible to hit. The Grathas are the only ships that might give you some trouble.

Hey guys! We're risking to go off the topic here.
Howewer nice Hornets or Raptors are, we're here to congratulate the old trusty Scim. Had you ever blown the enemy with a rapid fire while flying Hornet? Had you survived a Jalthi's full salvo? Yes, the Scim would be wounded heavily, but she'll survive.
I'd repeat again and again - the Scim is a symbol of durability. She rarely comes home without burned marks - but she does come.

I LOVE THE SCIM!
I LOVE THE SCIM!
I LOVE THE SCIM!
I LOVE...

The scimitar always gave me the feeling that with one more shot, it should fly apart, thanks to the lack of indicators- which made me tense enough to fly a lot better and avoid more shots. I think that's what made it come more often- if it had armor indicators, you could rationalize "Just one more pass and another hit to me, and this one'll be down"; without them, you HAVE to be on edge since the shields are too thin.

I personally like to take a scimitar against everything but salthi light fighters.
Those squirelly little bastards are always getting behind me!

Maybe I just suck at piloting. But having three heat seekers at my disposal is definately a strong point, not to mention the armor, however the lack of manouverability tend to balance out the heavier armor.

So I must say, the scimitar is a ship i love, but only in certain situations.

Good news for all you scim fans. I just calculated the number of missions each fighter has (gotta love insomnia), and the scimitar comes out ahead with 16 available missions vs 8 each for the other three fighter. Most of these missions are on a losing path; if you stick to the winning path you fly 2 in the hornet, three in the scimitar, five in the raptor, and eight in the rapier. I.ve spent most of my time in the scim mymyself- always had a hard time staying on the winning path when I first played the game-and I've grown rather fond of the lead sled's armor and mass drivers. Raptor pilot has a good point; those heat seekers are handy in a dogfight.

When computer-flown, you can't help but notice the Scimitar's awful manoeuvrability. It can actually take quite a few hits to destroy it, but it doesn't matter because you can both hit the Scimitar and dodge its hits very easily.

Well, there are some caveats there -- whose AI is flying those Scimitars? The Kilrathi profiles are all designed for faster, more maneuverable ships with longer range guns and less missiles... they may not automatically switch flying styles when someone hacks apart the game.

One of the really surprising things I've encountered is people who love the series because of the movie. You don't find them online, but whenever we're plugging the site at a convention we get a steady stream of old school sci fi fans who come up to us to say they loved the movie and want to see another one... I guess it takes all kinds..

I loved the movie... That's the reason I got the games
