Saving AFTER Beating Wing Commander

So, I just beat Wing Commander- got an uber cool medal and then I can't save my game and take it with me into the expansions. Now I figure I could use a save game editor- but that feels like cheating. Is there any other way to get the medal and the kills on my save game?

That always bugged the heck out of me, too, when I played WC1, and I never found a way around it.

It was especially annoying because, on my second playthrough, I played on a 286 (computers were expensive back then, and our real computer died, so I had to pull out an old one to get my WC fix), which had the effect of slowing down everything and making the game much easier--which led me to the most insane kill scores I ever got (I think I even beat the Kurasawa Ralari mission on the first try!) and somehow ended up with TWO Pewter Planets by the end of WC1 (not sure--it was a long time ago--but that was my memory). But of course I could only carry one through to the Secret Missions, because there was no way to save at game's end.

Was it because, when they wrote WC1, they didn't expect to be creating addons?

DOS, but the transfer works off of the save game. The last time you can save is before the last mission, therefore your kills and medal don't carry over to the expansion.

No, there's no way to save afterwards and keep your "legit" file. If anything, I was upset at losing my kills.

Well, I used the save game editor and now my expansion pilot has the medal- so I'm happy. The editor, apparently, also fixes the missing pilot bug- so it's all good.

To confirm, there is no in-game method to save with the last set of kills and/or the medal of honor. This was actually a huge issue in 1990-91, which ultimately lead the designers to award the same medal in Secret Missions 2 in the *next to last* mission, so it could be saved.

I forget...after you beat WC1 (it's been too long), I know you get presented with a medal, and see the credits roll, but is there a shot of your finalized set of medals? If so, you could at least take a screenshot to record your glory!

You are correct, sir - there is such a shot.
