Privateer in Grandad's Taurus?

Curious to know how many of you veteran WC pilots have been able to finish Privateer (Privateer 1 - Steltek Drone plot) in the Taurus. I tried out the newest version of VegaStrike last week, and the music that is played while I'm in dock made me homesick for Privateer to the point I had to play it again, for about the 16th go-around of the Steltek/RF plot missions. This time I wanted to try and use a Taurus for the whole campaign, something I have not done before. Typically I'll dump the Taurus the very first opportunity my finances allow, usually before I ever leave the Troy system.

I made around 1 million credits running various 'random' missions in the Taurus before I launched into the Steltek plot. In the Centurian missles are almost superfulous, but in the Taurus missles equal life when faced with 3 or 4 to 1 odds, even with lowly Talons. The Palan mercenary embargo busting and escape from the Kilrathi with Monkhouse off of Palan was extremely difficult, at best. That Taurus with Level 1 shields/engine just has no 'oomphf'. Add in the relatively easily damaged tachyons, and you frequently might as well "dump your cargo before you blow".

I am heading out to Rygannon presently to do the survey missions, and who knows, maybe find an alien drone. I don't know if I can take on the pride of Kilrah out in the asteriods in this underpowered/undershielded/slow 'power-house' of a space-combat ship, the Taurus.

Is the RF plot easier or more difficult than the Steltek plot missions flying in a Taurus, since in RF you at least can upgrade your engine/shields/guns/repair bot/armor?

Wow . . and, damn. I salute you. I don't think I could pull that off. I'd have to at least upgrade to a Galaxy. If there's another Privateer game made, it needs to have the Tarsus. Really, that would so rule.

I can't get past the third mission for the Exploratory Service with Miss Cross as the fixer ( the mission right before you discover the Steltek derelict). By the time I reach the target system to run through the nav points, I'm either too low on missiles to effectively fight the Kilrathi who are predominantly fanatical pros and aces, or too shot up for my 'pinked out' guns to be effective in their damage to the Kilrah ships.

I am curently on good terms with the Kilrathi, but the pirates you have to fight are too much in this system for the Tarsus to handle, and then take on these tougher Kilrathi at the actual mission system. Flew this mission without too much trouble in a maxed out Orion after about 4 tries with failure in the Tarsus. The best I did in the Tarsus was making it to the last nav point before sucking void.

It would appear the next mission where you travel to Delta Prime would actually be easier than this one that has me ending my Tarsus carreer. I considered trying to kill enough Confed and Militia to have the pirates neutral, then pop Retros until the good guys can stand me again, but there is only so much time in a day.

I wonder if you can survive a single hit from the Steltek Drone guns in a Tarsus if you were successful in completing the Taryn Cross missions.

ah im back, overmortal, u post to much slow down im having trouble keeping up with your posts, id also like to thank LOAFie for unlocking me.

the tarsus sucks i always hated that ship i salute u for getting that far

Lord Nathrakh! (Actually, I just announced your 'welcome back' in another thread. oops)

If you think I'm so slow, then, obviously, the one who needs to change is you. Start reading more quickly! Good to have you back.

Yeah, you really want to be careful fighting the Steltek in the Tarsus... it's rather painful.

Haven't ever played Privateer in a Taurus, or any Ford vehicle for that matter.

(Snicker!)

I finished it in a Tarsus, I also did Righteous Fire in a Tarsus. You can really hop it up in RF. :D

Actually, Bob, it's "Galaxie". It's a Ford thing.

A Ford Orion, Ghost? Never heard of it. Must be a Brazilian model.

Orion!

I had to sell the Torus for the more powerful centurian during my privateer days. Taurus just couldn't cut it against that drone. I mean heck, it took out an entire Confederation Fleet!

Actually, I'm pretty sure it's an argentinian model. The closest thing to that picture we have here in Brazil is the old Escort model.
