New Wing Commander Game?

If the next WC game were a sequel, then it'd only be proper to have a sequel to Wing Commander: Arena. You could create a new cast of characters for the hero group and still have existing tech to work with. If anything, the modified craft could even give us a choice in building our own ships so to speak.

I can easily see common WC working with a modernized control scheme. Taking previous games into account, I'd imagine the primary method of flight would be akin to the mouse control from WC1 for the left analog, and the right analog would allow us to look around. Click the left analog, afterburner, just like in WC:A. Click the right, camera lock on your current target. That's just an example of how I think it could work while being simple. Left trigger, missiles. Right trigger, guns. Left and right bumpers: Weapon change for respective slots. D-Pad? Comms menu.

Best part is, if this theoretical WC game got a PC version, I'd imagine it'd have a control scheme we'd all be familiar with. Also, in time, probably a lot of custom craft & missions if it's mod-friendly.

Thats one post full of horrorfull things for a full WC release.

If it does not feature decent Joystick support and keeps with some Space Sim conventions of "realism" its not deserving the name IMHO. If it goes down the arcardey trail ill just skip it.

And if it is a traditional WC game of flying your fighter/bomber from a carrier or base to kill some baddy I realy can live without that customization part. Ive yet to see military pilots start to build their own craft during a tour of duty. Maybe paintschemes for ones fighter or the squadron but anything else realy does not fit such a setting.

If its a privateer type game, maybe but, I feel much more comfortable with ships that have certain specifications that allow you to weld only so much of extra equipment to them before they start to fall apart by themselves.

I came up with a neat idea for a WC game that was a blend of the traditional structured storyline and Privateer style openness. It involved you, a confed pilot, escaping from a kilrathi POW camp with a stolen freighter and a band of beaten and all but defeated confed personel and civilians of various skills. It could be set at any time during the Kilrathi war really.

Basically, you would have a standard mission or two before being captured and then a more open concept where you choose which route, objectives, and wingmen, equipment to get back to confed space... I worked out some of the mechanics but I won't bore you with it right now.

I'd like any new WC game though I do tend to be more in favour of going further in the timeline. Fleshing out the Nephilim conflict maybe. And I think a Privateer-game would work very well with the Arena setting. You could fly human or Kilrathi or at least Kilrathi fighters and could fight every faction like in Prib with the Nephilim added.

But of course, the earlier war years also have a lot to offer. Just don't put the game in the period of 2665 to 2669, I think that period is rather crowded already.

I think it would be fun to go back to the WC1 time and do a semi reboot.
You could go back to the same time, to the Vega campaign but be a different pilot, flying off of a different carrier.
This could give an excellent opportunity to bump into characters like Hawk earlier in their lives and the story could include things that the claw had done ie 'thanks to a successful strike by the Tigers Claw in Brimstone, we have an opportunity....'

or you could impute a completed saved game from the original game, and what happened in a particular (lets say) WC1 game, would affect what will happen in the new one.

This might be a nice idea for a new type of multiplayer game. You could have a proper campaign, with 2 to 4 players taking turns to do missions (or maybe in real-time in a mmog) and each persons success impacts on everyone else.

Using a familiar mission, lets say (like most people) you could be the pilots that help capture that Ralari, then the 'Claw mission we all know and love could have been up to someone else, if that is failed, then it actuvates something for the next player to do, maybe they have to do the mission that the Ralari was going to do.

I actually really like the idea of this.

Eh, no MP-focused WC please.

I concurr. Though having something along the lines of a dynamic persistent multiplayer WC universe, that assigns missions to the players depending on where they are when they log in would be an interesting add-on to a single player game. If two players happen to be online at the same time and be on the same ship they might get assigned into one wing. If it would be possible to play on the Kilrathi side one might by chance get assigned to escort a ship that another player is assigned to destroy. But it realy should only be a multiplayer module, not the main game.

Not to be misunderstood: a MP component to a new WC game would be awesome, I just don't like games as much that are more heavily focused on MP than on SP. I realize that this is a very personal wish and nothing that can be taken as a norm.

I read this and thought of WC4. Good idea though.

I was thinking of something a little more elaborate than just which two out of three missions you get to pick in a choice of two systems, but yeah that's a bit of the idea. But rather than that, I was thinking of something more along the lines of the Privateer nav maps. and missions style, where you could essentially go anywhere.

You would be presented with story segments and specific needs. The story would branch depending on failures and whatnot but it's progression would also hinge on completing different goals etc or reaching specific places. You would have a choice of various objectives (stay undetected, get fuel, get materials for repairs, get intel, scout ahead) but you could lay it out in any of the nav points within range of your carrier. Later, jump capable fighters can let you scout farther ahead, perhaps, making jumping to the next system less risky. I would definitely limit jump fuel though a la WC2.

There may be more than one place to get certain items or routes to take to get to specific objectives. There could even be bonus' that you don't even have to discover or complete to finish the game.

I do get that, I like stand-alone games myself, but if WC is going to get a successful relaunch, you have to look at the market trends and in PC gaming it's all about MMO at the moment, so launching a new game that is only MMO may be a wise move.
We all know that the space flight sim is pretty much a dead duck in the industry, so making one is a huge risk for any developer and if a standard WC was launched and failed, that could very well be the end of our beloved universe.
However, if a WC MMO was really successful, it would then increase the fan/install base to such a level, that there would be the opportunity to release further games that were more true to the original WC game dynamic.

This utterance originated from the same talking heads that said all the PC game developers would go exclusively to consoles due to rampant piracy. And hey, lookit that! Wolfenstein? On my PC? How'd that happen?

Nevermind that MMOs can do so horribly they don't even survive an entire year. Like Tabula Rasa and Hellgate London. Hooboy! And in the latter's case the developer died with it.

Wing Commander could go any which way, but I have this notion in my brain that it's going to be a multiplatform single player game (maybe with four player co-op) with a story and perhaps even live action. Why? EA seems happy to keep its franchises well within their established stereotypes. Goodness knows the Internet cries otherwise.
