More Than One Way To Skin A Kat... (November 8, 2015)

We've got a fun new poll starting today that asks about your favorite method for carrying out a capship strike. Lots of people might generally prefer conventional guns or standard ordnance, but that just scratches the surface. There's different ways you can use the normal armament, plus there's a host of special weapons pilots sometimes have access to. Occasionally, you just feel lazy and get to sit back and watch your escort do all the hard work. I wouldn't recommend it, but I've even seen some kamikaze pilots out there!

The old poll asked how long visitors have been coming to the CIC. More than a quarter of you have been around since the CIC's grand opening in 1998 - or even earlier! Another fifth of the audience has been around at least fifteen years. Interestingly, almost one in six people is a new reader here, which is the highest proportion in more than a decade. Overall, it's a great mix of veterans and newcomers!

I voted "Mace" though that only counts for the SO2 Mace not the one from WC4.

Actually, my favourite method is not (explicitly) mentioned: Leech Missiles from WCA and then blasting the ship with guns. I love doing that! Close behind are letting other cap ships do it and torpedo runs.

Yeah, it's easy to get too many options. We debated whether the Devastator's plasma gun was different than the WC1 guns versus the Fission Cannon and had to just simply it down. Leeching is a pretty big one, but like the Mace, it's quite different in the game it first appears in versus WC4. So I'd group that into "Unload with missiles," which I'm surprised has almost no votes. I think it's an especially viable tactic with Dumbfires or HS missiles in WC1 and WC3 and maybe a few other places.

I absolutely understand just wanted to give the WCA Leech an honorary mention :).

Edit: I was confused by the option "Shooting turrets off first". I mean, I do that in the applicable games a lot...but it does not kill the capship.

I voted flying through the inside. Unconventional is my conventional. Lock up (or don't), 'burn, launch and buzz. Loved taking out the Dralthi's spotted on the decks of Bhantkaras at full burn. Flying inside the super-structure made Fralthi IIs a cinch too once you fly past the guns.

A certain Flashpak mission also involved flying through the flightdeck.

In WC3 I've been known to strip all the seekers for dumbfire missiles in my Excalibur. I used to salvo them (B key) while cutting into a capship with power system modded tachyons and reapers.

Did the same with a Longbow a couple times. I would lock up two torpedoes at once, go full burn into the bay, and just as the lock pipper would begin to drift from view I would launch. Soar through and Rear View. Eat your heart out Seether.

Flying inside also kept fighter fire off you.

We should record our stunts!

Now all the above is Realspace engine... if we are talking FX I'd go with the Mace. Maniac was on to something. Radioactive decay is hardly an issue in the void. Maceing Ayer's Rock was the best, and Minx's last comm she states that radiation is killing her. A mace in their face sounds canonical and mildly amusing.

I liked locking my torps onto the carrier then would fly right through them pull as tight a split s as I could and fire a volley of right into the carriers rear. After I got the editor for WCP I would add autoslide and then pull some B5 or BSG stunts fly down the side with the torp locked on and just as I passed the target shoot it off and watch the fire works
