I don't think they actually ever say, but the teacher/astronaut is indeed more likely.

I had always thought it was the astronaut as well, but today I read in a book on WW2 about an Air Corps General McAuliffe, and that got me thinking.

Well, like Quarto said, it's never said in the novels. But it would make more sense if it is named after an astronaut.
