I {Bleep'd} At Chris Roberts And Did Not Get Fired (March 3, 2008)

Long Live the Confederation!

Gamasutra has posted an article about artist Paul Steed's recent Game Developers Conference lecture. Mr. Steed got his start in the game industry working on Privateer and Wing Commander III and went on to greater fame as an artist on various high profile FPS games. His speech included an interesting (and slightly unbelievable) anecdote about Chris Roberts:
“I was at Origin for four years. I’ll tell you a funny story about developing Wing Commander III. Does everyone know who Ginger Lynn is? Well, she was a porn star. Chris Roberts had no idea, and didn’t believe me when I told him. This guy, my boss, didn’t know it. So I took him to the video store and we watched some stuff. He gained a new respect for people in the adult entertainment industry!”

I'm not sure how to take his not knowing who Ginger was. It is pretty unbelievable.

Hey, I didn't know that when WC3 came out... but then I was only (14?) and it was at least a year until we would have internet.

Not knowing a particular porn star doesn't seem especially unusual - it just sees like the sort of thing that would have come up during the casting process (or been discussed during the shoot in LA.)

I "discovered" Ginger when my friends and I discovered my Mom's boyfriend's stash. I don't recall putting 2 and 2 together back then, but once it was known I was like "Oh, yeah that's that chick!"

That and I see her every day at work. She's still quite popular.

It might have been that it wasn't brought up because it wasn't relevant to that project. It'd be like bringing up my year+ working in construction when being interviewed for a CG job at ILM.

It would have been great if Origin had embraced her past. Can you imagine screen credits on the back of the WCIII box? "Best remembered for her role in ...." That would have been classic.

I remember sitting in Adam Foshko's office looking at audition tapes - I recall that either Amanda Wyss (the girlfriend from Better Off Dead) or Jenny Wright (from Near Dark and The Wall) auditioned for the role. We got Ginger's tape and there wasn't a soul in that office didn't know who she was. I have to say we were all somewhat surprised to find that her audition genuinely was the best out of the lot!

Ha! I guess all those 3 seconds of acting she had to do before taking her clothes off actually gave me some talent.
