Men, we have fought through the war together. I have done the best I could for you."

The battle is over, and I have placed... third - which means I've brought home an Xbox 360 Elite and 11,200 MS Points to give out to the Wing Commander community. We'll be figuring out a way for you folks to earn that prize in the next few days - be forewarned, you'll have to be a real WingNut!

The tournament was amazing, and remains largely a blur to me. I scored very poorly out of the gate - I began by getting myself stuck in the Boneyard's warren of caves... and ultimately managed to score only six kills! Luckily the second round was in the Space Station, where I managed to make up the difference somewhat, putting me into seventh place out of eight who would continue on.

Everything changed in the second elimination round. I flew a Broadsword Behemoth almost exclusively and then placed second (24 kills) and first (25 kills) in the respective rounds. The folks in #WingNut were watching via GamerTagRadio and cheering for me, my brother and my sister stayed up to watch me play, I was getting a constant stream of congratulatory messages via Xbox Live (I'm sorry - I couldn't read them during the fight!) and I was on top of the world.

... but it turned out we had to redo the last match! Someone had been left out. With some grumbling, we reorganized and fought again... and again I came in first with 25 kills! It was just amazing. I progressed to the fourth round, where I again picked the Behemoth... but came in only third. I won't lie, I relied pretty heavily on tractor beams and torpedoes, after finding that more maneuverable fighters didn't work in such a giant melee - but it was a heck of a lot of fun, regardless!

My sincere thanks to Electronic Arts for including the CIC in the contest. The goal was, after all, to gain some good press for Arena... so there was no reason they needed to include our site. They already know that we love the game for its merits and regardless of how the wind changes in the blogosphere.

Finally, congratulations to Super Dunners from xbox360fanboy.com, who won the home theater system! A special thanks to GamerTagRadio, too - Godfree did a fantastic job of covering the event (and Arena in general - if you haven't heard his interview with Sean Penney, check it out!).

And of course thanks to our wonderful community - for cheering me on, for believing in me and for putting up with me for ten years now. After the battle was over, everyone in #WingNut celebrated by playing three more rounds of Arena with me! It seemed only appropriate.

Way to go on third place, we were all completely riveted to our screens the whole time. The take-away prize is also seriously nice, and we should all be jazzed that Wing Commander Arena warranted such a contest, and that LOAF was included (and made a more than excellent showing.)

I'd just like to reiterate that you kicked some serious ass. And had the top-four match gone even slightly differently, I have no doubt in my mind you could have flown your Rhino to total victory.

This was one of the most intense and exciting things we've ever done in #Wingnut. People were coming in nonstop to wish you luck, and there was a huge crowd online to watch the live feeds of the event. Counting up to your 25th kill in those games with everyone was incredible. Here's just a tiny snippet from a roller coaster two hours:

    Congratulations LOAF!

Though I check the front page every day, I only saw the last two days' entries today (time zone differences, I suppose). So I had no idea the tournament had just gone by.

Still, third out of sixteen players is an incredible effort, especially considering (by your own admission) that you're not a gamer. All those hours of practice must have paid off indeed! :)

Personally, I favour the heavier fighters in the main WC series, so it was interesting to read of your choice of ship. Just a question: how do the tractor beams work in Arena? You said you use torpedoes, presumably against the fighters - are they like big fat dumb fires with massive payloads or something? Sorry for the rookie questions, but it's pretty hard to work out how you play just from watching videos and I don't think there have been many where the player chooses the Broadsword...

Congrats LOAF. I'm glad to know you did so well. I wish I hadn't had to go to bed, but work with no sleep 2 days in a row sucks. Again though great job I'm glad the CIC will be able to add the 360 Elite to the gifts it has giving us over the years.

    Eisen would be proud....

Yes, the torps in Arena are pretty much super-dumbfires. As for the tractor beam, when activated it projects a cone out in front several fighter-lengths, and any ship caught in that beam is unable to move until dead or released. With them captured in the tractor beam, you can fire a torp at them without worrying about missing, resulting in a one-hit kill.

I've noticed you can move a little bit around the cone, if you are in a smaller fighter you can try to avoid the torps, but it is still pretty difficult.

The intenseness in #WingNut last night was *unbelievable*. Reading that log may seem weird and ridiculous if you weren't there, but if you were, you know exactly why everyone was freaking out. Congratulations, LOAF!

I just mean we'll have to make sure the prize goes to a regular reader instead of someone who reads at an Xbox site that we're giving away a prize.
