365 Days of Astronomy has profiled the tachyon, a wonderful time traveling subatomic particle that moves faster than light and has a cool name. If the powerful Tachyon Cannon wasn't famous for its market value in the Gemini Sector, its inclusion on the F-103 Excaliur definitely brought it to the forefront. Scientist Craig Robertson has recorded a podcast that discuses some of the theory behind the physics. The Wing Commander series is later mentioned as using the concept in popular fiction. Check it out here. -- Original update published on July 8, 2010
Yeah when I was young the Tachyon Cannon in Privateer was my favorite cannon. Great price/performance ratio... nice re-fireing rate. Nice range... However now I'm 15-16 years older and however the Tachyon Cannon is no longer my favorite weapon. I prefer the simple Laser now. This might be due to the fact that my favorite all time ship in Wing Commander is the Arrow. So I always end up buying a Centurion with 4 Lasers and thanks to RF add-on a gun cooler and all those stuff. Don't get me wrong I still love the Tachyon Cannon but my personal experience tells me: "Go long, go fast, go faster, go for Laser!"
I do two combos... either Lasers and plasma (range and power), or Tachs and Particle (Wing Commanders "Super Weapon Past/present"). Both kicked ass!
