FB-202 "Ghoul" Long Range Fighter/Bomber

Howard Day

Random art guy.
I honestly couldn't help myself. The concept art by Feng was just too good - for those who don't know what I'm talking about, the original image is here:

Anyhow, it's not done yet, obviously - the whole back end hasn't got any details yet, and the underside of what I'm calling the "weapon pod" is also lacking in any great detail. No textures. I did take some liberties with the "bussard collectors" as it seemed like they were a staple of all the fighters in the Prophecy stable and it felt odd to leave them out of a fighter from a similar era. As for the name, just going with something down the Banshee\Vampire\Shrike path.
Rip 'er apart. :p

Any chance of getting a model release? I've been talking with the 'other' Jason about porting this sucker into WCSO for some time now.

I think it would look better without the bottom fin, with that pod being flat on the body of the ship. Other wise pretty cool.

I don't see why not. I really doubt that it would help you guys any - this is not a game model, as the un-sub-divided mesh is easily 150,000 polys.

As for the pod - I can see what you're saying, but I'm trying to follow the concept art. :D

Great, great, great!

As for the name, just going with something down the Banshee\Vampire\Shrike path.

The Banshee, Vampire and Shrike are all named after aircraft, though. Maybe "Goblin"?

If its a purely space based fighter, maybe it is designed to be held in some sort of rack? assuming that the wing is fixed and can't fold back or anything.

Either way, it looks very interesting

Mmmmm, very pretty. Still can't figure out how this thing lands, though :).

Perhaps it uses the "Sparks" method of stowage. Just attach some null gravity units and hang it from a hook on the ceiling of the flight deck :D

Holy frak that is sexy! :)

And I like the "Goblin" monker.. if I recall, the Goblin had no landing gear either..

You know.. now that I do a GIS for the Goblin fighter (Mc Donnell XF-85).. I can't help but think it looks a bit like the Rapier from that movie..

Anyway.. Awesome job! Please consider doing up a nice 'action render' similar to Feng's sketch.. pretty please?

- Capn

First off, great job.

Now, I don’t mean to raise a ruckus, but might I suggest using one of the ship names mentioned in Star*Soldier? I nominate the Fury.

If you want it named after an actual aircraft, well, the list is long and distinguished:

FJ-2/-3/-4 Fury ( jet fighter)
Hawker Fury (fighter)
Hawker Sea Fury (Naval fighter-bomber)
Felixstowe Fury (Long-range flying-boat)
LoPresti Fury (prototype sports plane)

In regards to spooks and spirit namesakes, Fury could very well refer to the roman spirits known Furies (‘Erinyes’ to the Greeks), chthonic deities of vengeance or supernatural personifications of the anger of the dead.

Just food for thought.

Anyway, two big thumbs up to you, Howard Day. :D

It looks awesome. It reminds me a bit of the "Sai" fighter that appears with the Japanese fighter squadron in StarLancer.. but yours is better looking. Maybe that fin beneath the pod could fit missiles on it (which I think is what the Sai did in StarLancer). Otherwise if people think it looks better without that fin, it could be something that has to do with radar, communications, or jamming and it could fold or retract like a switchblade when enemies are near.

Quarto:
Thanks - got an idea on how that landing could take place...going to have to get a little further along to see for sure.
Oggy: That's the plan - fold the lower wing back.
Dundradal: Cheater solution. :p
Capn Johnny: Glad you approve - and I definitely plan on making at least one action image with this - perhaps even an animation.
WCX: Huh - I think I'd like to stick with the "Goblin" Seems more mischievous. I like it quite a bit. But thanks for the suggestions, all the same.
Mjr. Whoopass: Well, as this is a WCP era fighter, the missiles are launched from tubes. You can see all 6 tubes in this next set of pictures - the four on the wings are for conventional missiles, while the two large ones in the pod are for torpedoes. Top Wing guns are Lasers, and the two Pod guns are Tachyon Cannons.

I could use this model.. even out of games it makes a terrific artwork reference.

you still owe me a 3d file of that ship you made off my 'TCS Falcon' drawing too, y'know ;)

Looking at the new set of images, the first thing that came to mind was strapping a few of these to the hulls of transports and other like ships and using them as point-defense/recon ships. They could be launched from some kind of attached launching tube (the impression I'm thinking of is similar to the Japanese I-400 subs).

They certainly are gorgeous.

I still have no idea how they would land though. I wouldn't call it cheating Howard, just an imaginative "spark" :D

As always, amazing work...

Looks great. Can't wait to see how it lands.
Hopefully I can mock that up soon.

You shall have it...and Sorry about that Falcon thing - I'm going to get that to you soonest. :D

It's an interesting idea - similar to something like what they did to the Morningstars on the Gamal Gan? Could be interesting... :D
I like it.

Looks like a mix of Prophecy style ships, and the Banshee.
My thoughts exactly. :D

So here are the latest updates...basic, very basic textures, more details, and engine flares.
Went for the the greenish flares shown on the cover to Armada.

Basically all of Paladin's ships fit the bill, but yeah something along those lines. It looks like a ship that's designed for the long fight. It doesn't look like a ship designed with a fast turnaround time in mind. :) I could see one or two of these being attached to some Pelicans and used for escort between jumps.

I just have no idea how else you'd launch or land the damn things :D
