Favorite fighter.

If you compare WC ships to pens, the Victory is a soccer ball....

I think that the Orion is the most useless ship in Priv. It is too underarmed to be of any use, even though it is heavily protected. It doesn't make much sense among the dedicated fighter (centurion) and the dedicated small freighter (Galaxy). The tarsus made sense because it was the mandatory crappy first ship, but with some upgrades it wasn't THAT bad... to be trully crappy, it should have just one missile launcher hardpoint. But then it wold be REALLY hard to play the game. The Orion should hae had 3 guns or 2 missiles HP. or maybe even 3 missile HPs, and then it would be a slow, heavily armored misile boat. Then it would have a role.... I NEVER buy it, because I'm better off with the Tarsus' twin missile launchers. I just save enough money to buy a Cent or a Gal.

The speeder would be interesting. moreso than the orion. Sigh. I like the name orion, i use it a lot as callsign in games.

Interesting point. I always thought: I need better protection than shield/engine level 1/1 the (level 2 shield = no gun energy) to do anything outside Troy. I'll try sticking to the Tarsus 'till money for the Cent arrives in my next playthrough of classic Privateer.

Anyway, my favourite fighters:
WC1: Rapier (Hornet on steroids describes it pretty well. I like flying Hornets like they are used in SM1/2, so...)
WC2: Rapier II (This thing is cool, as long as you can turn off that cockpit)
WC3: Arrow (Nice missile armament for a light fighter)
WC4: Avenger w/ experimental cloak (Real stealth tactics rule!)
WCP: Black Wasp (brrrrrrrrrrrrr... Boom! 'nuff said.)
Priv: Centurion

I advocate that this thread be permanantly stickyed to the forum page so we don't have to worry about any new threads.

Oh, sure, you need more shields to leave Troy. But I'm making good money just taking 3 "patrol all nav points"... Sometimes I get as much as 30k for them. But it is usually between 16k and 20k. I already got me 2 tachyons, the hunter 6i (which is all you need early on), the repair droid (major money saver), cargo exp, Ab... No need for extra maps or jump drives for now. Although I could use the drive for the hunting missions in neighbouring systems. The drive is moved to the new ship anyway...

BTW, off topic....I remember reading that the Tarsus was basically an out dated ship. Around in what time in the WC timeline was the Tarsus considered the cutting edge of ships?
About the same time that a Volkswagon Beetle was considered a cutting edge car.

or the arrow for patrol, escort, scout missions...
I have to say, the Arrow did rock. Not because it was an awesome fighter, but more because of the fact that it was the first light fighter Confed built that wasn't a death trap. (Hornet, Ferret, Epee, etc.) The fact that it actually had *speed* allowed you to plow in and out of an engagement without a scrape. And its sizable armament meant that you could sting your foes while at it. :)

The ferret had speed, but I found it is not effective to fly faster than 320 in it as you end up ramming everything (which as you know is suicide in a ferret). But you can outrun and outmanoever almost any other wc2 ship and are a small target. The biggest fault of the Ferret is no missiles making it useless if you have to come up against a significant number of heavies. The Epee had some goog points but lacked the recharge rate of the Ferrets mass drivers.

I dont think that, when given the choice, I ever flew an arrow.

I have to agree with Bruce Wayne, the Arrow V is the BEST light fighter we ever got for Confed. Good guns (four of them!!!), awesome missile loadout (better than many mediuns), the mandatory speed and maneuverability... Only the UBW Banshee is as good. Hornets, ferrets, Armada arrows, Epees and Piranhas would get whooped by arrows and banshees.

Wow, then it seems like we've degressed from that point. Unless you'd rather choose a shuttle over a Tarsus.

I agree, I allways thought that the Arrow was a ok ship, but it was diffently the best light fighter that came out of Confed in a long time.

My point was the the Tarsus was never a "cutting edge" ship. It was a popular economy ship, just like the VW Beetle was a popular economy car. :)

WC1: Rapier
WC2: Sabre
WC2 SO: Morningstar
WC3: Tossup between the Arrow, Thunderbolt, and Excal
WC4: Tossup between the Banshee, Bearcat, and Dragon
WC5: Vampire
WCSO: Vampire

It was such a crying shame that as soon as you got to fly the bearcat, you instantly found Dragons, making the Bearcat practically obsolete.

The Vampire was such a fun ship to fly. Roll and pitch, and you could clear out neverending bugs without breaking a sweat. I used to prefer the Panther, but once I bought a joystick with a roll-axis, the vampire rocked.

For Bombers, it'd have to be, in this order, the Devastator, Longbow, Avenger, Shrike, Crossbow, Broadsword.

The Tarsus was originally an exploratory craft... It was meant to go into unknown (and probably empty) places and return. That is why it is kinda jack of all trades... BUT even in that job it is obsolete.

Yeah I know what you ment, I was just pulling your leg :)

WC1: Scimitar (Groovy vessel)
WC 2: Broadsword (Just felt chunky!)
WC3: Arrow was fun to fly
WC4: Hellcat V /Excaliber (I saw the excal in a cutscene but its been a while since I played WCIV was it playable?)
WCP: Panther
WCSO:Wasp

UBER GAMES! :)

Nope, it wasn't a playable ship in WC4 (not counting any fan mods, since they're not official).

The most FUN ships are:

WC1: Hornet (Yeah, let's take down 3 Fralthi with lasers)
WC2: Ferret (Mass Drivers + speed = mayhem)
WC3: Arrow (blowing up corvettes with lasers and ions)
WC4: Vindicator (All power to shields and stormfire)
WCP: WASP (MIRV)
SO: WASP (Dust Cannon)

Pity Excals Im sure would have wiped the floor with a Hellcat or pretty much anything apart from the Dragon!

Wow, took me a few seconds to understand this post...

WC1: Rapier (kinda weak especially in SM1, but still ace)
WC2: Rapier (I could kill faster than Sabres)
WC3: Thunderbolt (Excal is cheese)
WC4: Bearcat
WC5: Wasp

I'm also enamored with the Ferret but less than the Rapier.
