I was also under the impression that the device bored a small hole through the armor into the operational deck, then super-heated the atmosphere itself.
 
I thought it was something along the lines of Apollo 1. I figured that a ships oxygen could be released via micro holes were it would be mixed with other gases creating a Earth-like enviroment. Also I thought this would be done by having pure oxygen in the ships hull. Thus the FP would just ignite the Pure Oxygen. I had another theory that it carried or was made of highly volitile materials that would react (very violentley of course) with oxygen

So thew Fpak actually heats some point of the hull and that ignites the atmosphere? Interesting. I thought it made a small hole and them ignited the air. good to know.

I'm pretty sure it performs whatever it does to the hull itself... which is why the Vesuvius is immune (new alloy).

As far as I know, there's no reference to driliing anywhere. (Perhaps you're thinking of the Wing Commander IV novel, which explains that the detonator is screwed into the weapon by the fighter to avoid the possibility of it going off while in storage).

Robot was a GIS for "robot".
