Difference between Neutral and Friendly in Priv1

I have just played a bit of Privateer 1 and got from neutral to friendly with almost all groups (apart from kilrathi, pirates and retros)
I just have a question about the terms Neutral and Friendly. Of course, the comm messages are different in these two cases, but is there any other difference between Friendly and Neutral, such as help during combat situations?

I also noticed that the Confed sounds more friendly when being Neutral compared to their rather unfriendly "Patrol to civilian craft, keep your distance" when being friendly.

I haven't noticed much difference between Neutral and Friendly in combat situations. The reason for that is because the groups attack their enemies. Basically,

all attack each other and everything else:

Kilrathi
Retro
Pirate

attack the above three:

Confed
Militia
Hunters
Merchants

Of course, your character is different, it depends on who you are friends with as to whether you are attacked or not. But there really is no help in combat situations. It is mostly every man for himself.

BTW, Was there any way to get the Retros friendly? It was possible with the Kilrathis and the Pirates

I dont think anyone helps you in combat in Privateer except for that mission where you take on the drone and the fleet is there attempting to throw their useless weapons at it, they are helping you there, if they call it help! Sometimes if you jump into a system where Kilrathi are around and a few Confed fighters, they are simply fighting their war, and not actually assisting you.

I have a pilot saved from Privateer and RF where the only enemies were the Retros. I managed to balance out the kills between the Kilrathi and Confed/militia so they all became neutral. So by the time I got to the game RF, it worked out fine since the main enemies in RF is the Retros. I also have pilots saved where one pilot is a good guy, the other is very very bad!! He attacks anything, everything. Didnt take long before the entire universe was an enemy.

I don't know if you call it help, but I recall missions where I was bouny hunting retros and milita would join the fight. I still got the reward, which was always nice. Or doing some kind of cargo run and the Militia or COnfed would mix it up with Retros and I would AB past. (Usually early in the game when I was more interested in running cargo to make money than in fighting) Of course I sometimes got dinged on the jump out. Seemed sometimes those jumps took forever to start :)

People help you out all the time, perhaps except for the merchants. Well, obviously anything hostile won't help, but you know. Often when I'd arrive at a jump point when there was a group I was supposed to fight (for whatever mission) and militia or whatever, sometimes bounty hunters, they'd be engaging them before I got in to range. And when I was friendly with the Kats and the Confeds hated me, the kats and Confeds would fight first, then turn their attention to me.

Well they are actually attacking the pirates/Kilrathi because they are natural enemies. If you were on the side of the pirates, those mercs and Confed pilots be after you just as much as the other pirates around the nav point. They do not act as your wing at all. Otherwise, you should be able to call to one of them via comms and ask for help, which there is no entry in the comms window pointing to "help me out here!"

Hell, does the concept of role playing not come to mind at all?

So what if it's not meant to be set up that way? When the militia guy that looks like Michael Palin of Monty Python kills some retros and then sends you the "Let me know if you hit trouble in my quad" message, don't you even let your wretched little mind think for a moment that they may have been trying to help?

I think they are just reacting to the enemies as they would if you werent around the nav point to begin with. If there was a selecton in the comms window with "attack my target" or "please help me!" and you see a Confed or militia break off his target and attack the one behind you, Id say yes they do in fact help. I have yet to see that tho! :( But interesting if it was set up to do that, a bit more interactivity. Hey! A good idea for the next Privateer game!

Are we hitting a nerve there? Settle down boy!:) Sometimes they seem to help you out, but maybe LOAF could shead some light on this. Do they actually help you out in a nav point full of bogies?

Another thing. When you comm that way. They will help cuz their programmed to folow orders in the WC games. In Priv it would be the same. Also, the game is based on governments, some are enemies. THey will always attack their enemies. Some missions ships are programmed to be in teh same place, so they will fight..

Yep, in WC there is definately entries in the comms selection to ask for help, in Privateer and RF, there is none! Just general BS talk and taunts. No "help me" or "get this guy off my tail" entries. To me they seemed to be doing their own thing. Still lots of fun, especially that drone!! Love that Steltek Endurance mission!!

They were doing their own thing, though... that was one of the points of Privateer <G> (One of the advertising slogans, in fact, was about how you didn't have a wingman to save you in this game:)).

Pff, not that a wingman ever did... :(

Most of the time I find that the bad guys gun for me first, especially when there's pirates, me, and a whole convoy of merchants ready to burst with goods.

Pity the Retros don't bother with you on escort missions. Namely, Hunter Toth. (Why was he called Hunter? :))
