Chapter 3 & 4, 'Scouts' & 'Why Not?'

Knight

Spaceman
Ok, here's chapters three and four of the story. I've tried to proof read these a little better, but I know there's still mistakes, in spelling, grammer, and action, but don't be too harsh
smile.gif
I have the Novelization of the WCM, and Pilgram stars (paid less than 6 bucks for both of them
smile.gif
), so once I get them read, I'll be better able to do battle scenes. And a few things, about Knight's quarters on the Nemesis, think of Paladin's quarters on the Tiger Claw in the WCM, and I'm hoping to have a ship similar to what the Knightfall looks like soon. Anybody willing to volunteer a little time with 3D studio, email me

Here you go:

(BTW, Chapter 3 is really short, and 4's not much longer, so they're pretty quick readers)

Chapter 3

Scouts
2683.239, 0700 hours, Knight's quarters, TCS Nemesis

Knight awoke slowly, not wanting to, since it was one of the most comfortable beds he had slept on in a long time. He looked down to see that he had fell asleep while reading some of the latest news on a datapad, and still had his uniform on.

"I feel like hell," Knight said to himself. He didn't know why either, it was one of the best nights he'd slept in a long time. That might have been the reason, he thought, he was used to being up and alert, but something about this ship made him feel a kind of safety he hadn't felt since he had heard that Blair had blew Kilrah to hell, when he was back home.

He stripped and walked into his bathroom, and took a quick shower, before the timer shut the water off. He was already feeling better, and pulled out a fresh uniform from his bag, he only had three with him, and once he was dressed he dropped his dirty laundry into the laundry chute at the end of the coorridor. He walked to the turbolift, and told it to take him to the bridge.

TCS Nemesis Bridge, 0730 hours

Knight strode onto the bridge like he owned Confed, feeling much better than he did when he woke up 30 minutes before. He spotted the captain over by the comm and radar stations, observing the action over there, he heard some excited radio chatter and walked over.

"Knight, your ship tour's just going to have to wait, we have trouble near the second wormhole."

"I don't like the sound of that."

"The Nemesis is due there tomorrow. You know of her objectives. We sent out some long range recon fighters to let us know of any activity around there, since we haven't been able to hail the ships that are supposed to be guarding the damn thing. They were jumped by an unknown number of enemy fighters. Could be a scout wing of Devil Rays, could be a fuckin' carrier full of them. We don't know. Since you and your bird are now on board, Scorpion wants you to go out. The nav map has been programed. We're sending you to just outside what we think is radar range for the bugs. Cloak there, then head on in. We have Phoneix squad prepped and ready, and they'll be 100,000 klicks behind you, waiting on the signal to move in. Watch your ass. Dismissed."

"Radio silence?" Knight asked.

"Yes, until you find out what the hell happened." Winters replied.

"Ok, and if I come upon a carrier full of bugs?"

"Well, if you follow instructions, you'll be cloaked, so they won't see you. Head in 'n get a torp lock on the carrier, then decloak and fire. After you do that, radio for backup, and start shooting. We'll have that squad get there ASAP to help you out. Anything else?"

"None that I can think of, sir."

"Ok, for the second time, dismissed. And quit calling me 'sir.' Not even the cleaning lackies call me that."

"Sir." Knight said with a nod and a grin as he spun on one heal and strode for the lift.

----------------------

2683.239 0745 hours, TCS Nemesis, Flight Deck, Secure Bay 313

When he got to his ship, he started the preflight routine, and checked the nav map Winters' had setup. It looked ok, but he has only set him to come in 100,000 klicks outside of the wormhole. He made a few adjustments, and set the nav to 150,000 klicks. Better to be safe than have a whole fucking carrier full of bugs at my heals, cloaked or not. He glanced at the preflight and seen that it was green, so he cued his comm to ask for clearence.

=======================

Chapter 4

Why not?

2683.239, 0830 hours, KnightFall

"Well shit." Knight said as he came out of his first autopilot.

He flipped a couple of switches and brought up the cloaking system to a warm up state. He then toggled the LRR to check out what was 150,000 clicks ahead of him. He got a reading of 2 faint capships, and what seemed to be a few dozen fighters, but that was all shaky info, because of the distance between his location and the Proxima wormhole. The thought of goin' in gun-a-blazin' and uncloaked trickled through his mind, but he decided not to, since that might not be good for him or his ship. He glanced down and saw that his cloak was giving him a green light, so he engaged it and shut down his LRR. He looked one last time at his nav-map and thought: "Fuck it; lets go for it."

-------------------------------------

He dropped out of auto-pilot this time just under 20,000 clicks from the wormhole. He immediately did a full sensor scan of the area, and commenced his visual sweep, using his side and rear view VDUs to get a full 360 degree view of what could have been his worst nightmare. He was somewhat pissed to find that the two capships he had detected were the remains of the carrier stationed to guard the wormhole, and the other was a god damned Hydra class cruiser. The remaining carrier was the fifth Midway class made, he couldn't remember the name of the damned thing at the time. He had more important things to worry about anyway. The entire space was nothing but fighter debris and ejection pods it seemed. He didn't see how the lone cruiser took out the Midway class, but then he saw. Blocked from his radar by the wormhole itself, was a mighty and powerful Kraken Ship Killer.

"How many of those damn things to they have?" Knight asked himself.

Judging from the position of the Cruiser, it had just come through the hole. The Kraken must have come through first, and took out the carrier, then manuvered out of the way for the cruiser to come through. He mashed full throttle and hoped the bugs couldn't detect cloaked ships. You never knew what they were going to do next. He reached across where his co-pilot would be sitting, and flipped through his armory until he had one of his 2 large torps up to bat.

"Lock up so I can blow this bitch to hell." Knight said as the lock started on the engines. He slowed his flight to a stop slightly above the engines, giving his gun aray full access to the pitifully placed shield emitters. The torp lock chimed in his ears as he flipped the safety on his stick up with one hand and toggled the cloak with the other. His view flashed for a brief second and the turrets immediately locked onto him. He mashed his trigger and unleashed a volley of streaking light towards the shield emitters. A second later the light impacted and he saw the surface of the ship shimmer as its protection vanished. The turrets pecked at his shields as he massed the fire button on his stick and swung the ship away. Less than 3 seconds later, the torpedo impacted, sending explosions ripping through the ship. Less than a minute later, the Kraken was deader than the Midway class 15,000 klicks away.

Knight cued his comm:

"TCS Nemesis, this is Knightfall, send in the help. I have one cruiser still active, a few dozen fighters, and a dead ship killer for you guys to look after. Step on it. I'm not that good!"

"Roger Knight, fighters from Phoneix Squad have been scrambled from their location. ETA 3 minutes."

"Clear Nemesis. I'll be waiting."

Knight flipped his com off and set his mind on the task at hand. Getting as many of those fighters as possible on his way to the cruiser. He went ahead and set his next large torpedo up.

-------------------------------------------

The Phoniex arrived to find the cruiser dead, and the fighter total down to about 2 dozen, rather than the 3 or more thought. Just then a blue spot appeared on the radar, a red one disappeared, and then the blue one disappeared again.

"Son of a bitch...." Trent 'Scorch' Yarbrough said as he watched his radar.

"Phoneix Squad, you are weapons free at this time, if this guy doesn't get them all first....." Scorch stated over the com.

The battle was joined..........

---------------------------------------------

"Phoneix lead to Knightfall"

The blue dot appeared on the scope.

"Go ahead Phoneix lead."

"You've got a shadow."

"Really, I hadn't noticed."

"You need help? I can break off and help if you want."

"No, I got it."

"You sure?"

"Yeah, just stay on your target, I'll get this guy and the one behind me too."

Inside his cockpit, Knight reached across the seat where his would-be co-pilot would sit to flip a couple of switches. Almost everything could be controlled from his pilot's station, but there were just some things that couldn't fit, and this was one of them. In the center of the entire front control panel, set the main defensive computer, the only control being a keypad and three switches. Knight flipped the first switch, then the third, then hit "45#" on the keypad, then flipped the third switch. He then switched to his rear VDU and armed an Imrec. He adjusted his shields to keep the fire coming from behind him behind him, and waited on the Imrec to lock onto the ship he was chasing, not the one behind him. He looked into the rear VDU and saw that the 2 Imrecs were locked already, and flipped up the safety and launched 2 missles backwards, and 1 forwards. The Devil Ray infront of him caught the missle right in the engine, and it went up immediately, due to the weakened shields and armor by his guns. The Manta behind him saw the imrecs launch and tried to evade, only to fail, the first Imrec caught him in the belly and the second caught him more rearwards towards the engine.

Scorch was watching this, wanting to know how in the hell he did that. He made that thought vocal.

"Phoneix Lead to Knight, How in the name of Sivar did you fuckin' do that?"

"I'll tell you later, Phoneix Lead, if you're cleared to get near this ship."

"I want to know. ASAP if possible."

"Talk to the Rear Admiral."

"As soon as we are done here, we'll all sit down and have a chat." Scorch said with a grin over the VDU as he finished off his current target. A quick glance at his radar showed that the 3 Panthers and 2 Shrikes that were sent for backup, along with Knight's ship had cleared the radar down to just 1 more fighter, which vanished as he was looking.

"Phoneix Lead, I'm outta here, you comin' or you want to enjoy the view for a while?"

"Right behind you Knight, lead the way," Scorch said. As he finished he switched comm channels:

"TCS Nemesis, Phoneix Lead."

"Copy Phoneix, what do you have for us?"

"Knight's one hell of a pilot. All bad guys gone, no friendly ejects from our fight, but we need a few SARs here, because there's eject pods out the ass. We also have a dead Midway class, better call HQ. We're inroute back now, I'll give you a full report later."

"Roger Phoneix Lead. God have mercy on those souls that were aboard that ship."

"Agreed Nemesis. G'night!"

Ok, give me what you got Matrix and Quarto. I tried to do a little better. Don't know how much better it is though. Reason I put them together is that they are so small, that one doesn't really make up a chapter.

<Nasty grin> Why should we? I don't remember you posting any comments in my story.
But... all right, just this once.

Actually, as usual, I'm too lazy to bother with the nitpicks the first time round.

As for the story itself... aren't you overdoing it _just_ a bit? I mean, what's he going to do next? Destroy the rest of the Nephilem fleet and their homeworld by burping in their general direction? I don't know how powerful that ship of his is, but I do know that the destruction of a Kraken, Hydra, and escorts would take more than one fighter - cloaked, or otherwise. Don't overdo that sort of thing. It makes it impossible to build up any tension in a story.

Come to think of it ye didn't read my either, did ye. No more comments for you.

Ok, here's this: When I started seeing your stories, you were already in like chapter6, and I don't have enough time to read the first 5, since I have other things to do, and I feel lost whenever I read yours. Matrix, I just can't "get into" yours. It's nothing personal or anything, its just one of those stories. I hope you know what I mean.

Quarto, I'm kinda mixing WCIV and WCP games here. In WCIV, you could take down a ship with 1 torpedo, or with lasers if you had time. That's how he took out the Kraken, whether the physics work or not, I don't care. Should I post the ships stats here, so you'll know what I'm talking about? It has 2 large torps, 4 small, 8 IR, and 8 FoF. This isn't a fighter, it's more the size of teh Diligent, or maybe a little bigger, from the WCM. Same basic design, mine's just a little fancier. BTW, About taking out a Kraken, Hydra and escorts, I've taken out a carrier, a hydra, AND a shitload of fighters from a devastator. Something with a slightly bigger powerplant than a dragon, speed of about a tigershark, and payload of a Devastator should be able to do a little bit of damage. When I get more time, I'll post teh ship stats, and if I can find someone with 3D studio Max and a little bit of free time, I might try and get a pic. Think of this ship as a cross between the Falcon from SW, and the Diligent from the WCM.

No excuse

. Read them one at a time. Nobody says you have to read the whole thing in five minutes, you know.

Knight, you're missing the point. First of all, you could do that in WCP because the AI was lame. But lame AI is not an excuse for wholesale slaughter in a story. It just doesn't work that way. And secondly, it really doesn't matter if it's possible - to put it simply, it's the equivalent of reading about somebody spraying insecticide on an ant-hill. Not very exciting. Now, you're writing a story, not a report about WCP combat. Make it seem more dangerous - persuade us that he's in a warzone, not out on a picnic.

No actually I don't. That's why you supposed to post comments.

Do you guys really think that if I have that many mistakes, etc in my stories, and cna't find them, that I'm going to find them in yours? Anyway, be ready, I'm working on Chapter 5 soon, hopefully.

You're missing the point, Knight. We don't need you to search for mistakes. If you see one, then point it out, but if you don't, <shrug>. What we do want is to see people reading our stories, and telling us what they think in general. Now seriously, how can you expect us to read your story when you won't take the time to read ours?

Quarto took the words right out of my mouth. I write because I enjoy doing so; but it's nice to have somebody actually read it, and give comments on their own interpretation.
