Captain Blair of ISS service Record

Seventh Part of the Seal
Do we know anything about his time on Caernaven station? He spent 10 years of the war there, do we know what he did during that time? I would think he'dve at least done some pilot work as Captain "Shadow" Norwood talks so high of him to Angel when they arrive on the Concordia.

We don't know that he spent 10 years on Caernaven. We know he was 9+ years in the ISS and that's it. How much of it he spent flying isn't clear either. He *is* a pilot but Tolwyn was pretty set on him not flying.

Maverick and Shadow's opening lines in WC2 seem to imply that it's mostly just routine patrols in Ferrets, without even pirates to make things interesting. That, and boring paperwork (or the electronic equivalent), plus monitoring station communications (as it was Blair who answered the Concordia's distress call).

Although, given Shadow's remark about destroying an enemy garbage ship, there probably were a few Kilrathi around at one point, but that was "years" before the start of WC2.

As for Shadow complimenting Maverick's skill to Angel, she may just be referring to the couple of combat missions Maverick flew with her just before arriving on the Concordia (remember that Shadow was understandably rattled about encountering Kilrathi, compared to Maverick's composure in reporting the incursion to Caernarvon). Shadow also would have known that Blair was a great pilot on the Tiger's Claw before being dumped on Caernarvon - the trial relating to the destruction of the Tiger's Claw would have been highly publicised and Maverick remarks that Shadow was one of his few friends in the aftermath.

I wouldn't even take that literally - it's a joke/cute remark about something she said earlier in the conversation ("no one's spotted so much as an enemy garbage scow within twenty parsecs of here.")

... she was apparently a combat pilot at some point, though - she's on the list of pilots transferred to the Concordia in 2656, in the Kilrathi Saga manual.

As for what Blair did in those years (it was actually only nine years) - the Wing Commander I & II Ultimate Strategy guide claims that the period was entirely boring. There's an analogy that I forget exactly - less exciting than the Congressional record of the late 20th century or somesuch. It was all paperwork and the occasional patrol to help keep his sanity.

That patrol scared me, Christopher... I’m just a reservist! I’m not supposed to fly combat missions! All I think about is getting home to my family. Now the Kilrathi are here in the Gwynedd system… I don’t know if I can face them again, Maverick.

I just hope that you get that transfer to the Concordia, Maverick. She’s a beautiful ship. If I wasn’t retiring next month, I might try for a transfer myself…
I don't dispute the Kilrathi Saga manual, but these words hardly sound like someone who's seen combat duty, on the prestigious Concordia, no less.

My guess is that list was provided to give the player insight into the various characters' personalities.

Oh, no question that that was the point of the document...

(Although, note that this would have been the Concordia supercruiser and not 'our' Concordia... and we don't really know what the status of that ship was at that time.)

I apologize if it has been explained before, but what is the Concordia super-cruiser? Is that the vessel from the movie?

What is a supercruiser in general...is that the term for the *battleships* favored by both sides before the importance of carriers and wings was established?

Yeah, it's the one from the movie - it had a small fighter complement (and her pilots apparently included Chris Roberts...)

I think a supercruiser is basically just the heaviest kind of cruiser - similar to a battleship, but maybe a little bit more maneuverable and with some fighters. "Super" isn't a real naval designation on Earth, but it gets used a few times in Wing Commander - Sorthak Superfighters, Concordia Supercruisers, Snakeir Superdreadnaughts, etc.

Oh yeah, I have recorded in my collection that the TCS Confederation was laid down in 2660... though I can't remember what the source was!

Still, interesting that Jazz, Stingray and Downtown were together on that ship too.

The fan guess is that the Confederation would have put to space in 2660 or 2661, given the five years needed to build a new carrier. We know the Concordia was in service by 2661, so the Confederation was probably done then or earlier.

(Laid down means they just started building it, though, so that note probabl isn't right.)

I'm not familiar with the contents of the Kilrathi Saga manual. That's pretty neat that it references items from the movie...

I always loved the manuals. I should try and collect more of them.

EDIT wait, I think I may be confusing sources above... we just know from the timeline that Shadow would have been in service on the supercruiser Concordia...OK, I think I got it.

It's not really referencing the movie specifically (it was published two years before the movie) -- it was just referencing another ship named Concordia which the movie later made the supercruiser.

I'm willing to bet that they were built at the same time in seperate facilities (I know I've made this argument before... somewhere). The Confederation class, had the PTC not been so unstable could have been the ship to end the war. Imagine had the gun been a success, they would have continued building these ships, more and more of them would have been on the front lines.

They must have been built in separate facilities (or separate berths, anyway) -- since there's not time for two consecutive five year ship-builds.

I wouldn't be surprised if the initial production run had been for 3-6 of the ships to be built simultaneously.
