It Sure Was Good While It Lasted (December 4, 2007)

Yeah, Strike Commander didn't have much to distinguish it from bigger flight sims of the time. I still have nightmares about Falcon. At any rate, my biggest point is that the IPs themselves were viable, not necessarily the gameplay genres. There were many a creative direction these could have...

    Rapier Gripes

Enter the StarLancer 'priviledge of rank' ship selection. Definitely an evolution of pain and sorrow while being stuck in your least favorite fighter on a difficult mission. I agree, the Rapier missions in WC2 were akin to flying a paper airplane in an oven.

It Sure Was Good While It Lasted (December 4, 2007)

I was speaking of the time after the final release in any of those franchises. Sequels were in the works, but subsequentially shot down - for whatever respective reasons - by EA. Crusader was actually a fairly successful franchise at the time, but hit a hiccup during that transitional era...

The Movie. Jump points. Cats. and so on...

Even if that were indeed the case, there is nothing below the deck-plane when the Rapier leaves the runway. That being said, if the artificial gravity were still affecting the craft, it would pull it toward the 'Claw like a weak magnet, rather than just 'down'. An argument against the...

Jump capable pan-cake & agile cruiser...

Just goes to show that I need to try and order End Run again. Last time was a few years back on Amazon, and the order got cancelled since the third-party no longer had the product. :( At any rate, the Venture analogy still standing, the maneuverability of the craft doesn't much matter in this...

Jump capable pan-cake & agile cruiser...

I think the concept behind the corvettes was that they were World War II corvettes. ;) Light, point-running gunships with AA. But your analogy still stands; I only interject because the Broadsword is said to be inspired by the B-17, which was a much larger craft - that inspired a much more...

The Movie. Jump points. Cats. and so on...

Yep - it had its place in the original script / novelization. The threat was real, it was there, and it made sense. Like in WC2, all the finger pointing is at Blair while the real jerk is pulling the strings. Without that, the "Pilgrim hatin'" was, plot-wise, inconsequential and drew too much...

Jump capable pan-cake & agile cruiser...

I can't speak too much to the book, since it was written based on author perception of the source material and artistic license. Speed and maneuverability aren't everything, however, and if a pilot is green enough, they'll flight straight into defensive fire if they're under the impression that...

The Lonesome Death of FreeLancer 2 (December 5, 2007)

Even if they didn't want to pour money into another Wing Commander Proper game, I could have settled for an RTS, ala Homeworld. There were many other genres and directions to take the canon that were never explored.

In regards to the Dralthi - I know that the Dralthi III was jump-capable, and that newer models could be outfitted with a jump drive, if necessary. As far as capable ship maneuverability, I'll have to do some research. You could compare the stats from older ships to those in later games...

Battlefield: Wing commander - would it work?

FPS be damned, what's the point of a Battlefield Wing Commander if not played from the cockpit? I think it's a sensational idea.

It Sure Was Good While It Lasted (December 4, 2007)

I mean a story-driven sequel, or even a re-invisioning of the first game on modern technology. That is, not a spin-off. Also, LOAF - I agree. My gripe with EA isn't what games they choose to produce, but the games they don't. My anger at them was spurred by the discontinuation of my favorite...

Well, when you take into account the budget they had, I'd say that it added some limitations on just how far they could take the Kilrathi. As much as I enjoyed Wing Commander 1, you didn't really pick up on how little about the Kilrathi you knew until WC2. As someone who played the games...

    Kilrathi gender questions

Adding on to LOAF's input: The Kilrathi females are basically the architects of Kilrathi unity and preservation - using their religious status, they direct the race's overactive sense of aggression outward - towards other races - using the Cult of Sivar (The sivar eshrad is a good example of...

    Rapier Gripes

I was always bummed in WC1 when I had to switch over to the Rapier, full-time. I loved my Raptor so much. =..(

The Movie. Jump points. Cats. and so on...

Right, hence why I said there were too many inconsistencies to go into at great length. I mentioned the Rapier dip because it's the one most people don't pick up on. As for the Pilgrims, I'm not sure it was necessary to even introduce them at all - but that's a very old can of worms that's...

The Movie. Jump points. Cats. and so on...

Almost every Pilgrim leaves, teehee. You're not going to find any real good rationale for the Pilgrim anamoly in the game canon, simply because the Pilgrims were a plot mechanic made specifically for the movie. So it's difficult to quantify their existence - or evidence there-of - in anything...

The Lonesome Death of FreeLancer 2 (December 5, 2007)

I know there were clones, but I was speaking comparatively; consider the amount of FPS titles today to the amount of games that attempted to mimmick WC back then. You had your FreeSpace and your Terminal Velocity, but nothing really substantial during the WC1-4 era.

It Sure Was Good While It Lasted (December 4, 2007)

EA could redeem themselves for me if they created a modern M.U.L.E. But there's as much a chance of that as an actual Wing Commander.
