The fiction is mainly just "behind the scenes" backstory between the episodes. You can enjoy the game without reading the fiction, but it does help your experience. There is nothing to download. You can just read them online.

Well the dewclaw is a digit. It is usually removed from cats and dogs for perceived safety reasons (the dewclaw may catch on something while the animal is running and rip off causing possible infection) or sake of appearance.
