    Engineering CAD

This probably isn't terribly helpful, but from a cursory Wikipedia search, it seems like the forgat for .obj files is pretty straighforward (I assume they're ASCII?). .3ds files are binary and a little more complex, but nothing crazy...the fundamental way 3d objects are stored is the...

BREAKING NEWS: More Wing Commander on GOG Confirmed (June 17, 2011)

Something I've wondered. The CIC currently makes a fully playable version of WC1 available for free download, with EA's permission, if I recall correctly (it was the version bunded with a copy of PC magazine, or something like that?) If WC1 is one of the games that GOG releases...do you...

EULA for GoG EA releases gives consent to data mining

An incomplete list of things to do or not to do if you're worried about your personal data getting data mined: 1). Get rid of your cell phone 2). Cancel all credit cards 3). Stop using debit cards. ... 5). Cancel any Twitter, Facebook, or other social networking accounts ... 8). Cancel...

Privateer Day: Number Five with a Bullet (June 3, 2011)

I'm actually playing through Privateer for the first time ever right now (thank you GOG!), and I just bought and outfitted a Centurion to be exactly this role. I added afterburners, maxed the engines, beefed up the shields and ECM's, and am running past everything I encounter on full burners...

    WC Influences

So the issue of the Kilrathi being derived, at least in part, from Larry Niven's Kzinti came up in the other thread, which gave me the idea for this thread. I thought it would be a good topic for discussion, and maybe people could learn from others in the know. What elements of the Wing...

    Super Wing Commander cinematics

Is that a coincidence? I always just assumed that the Kilrathi were directly and shamelessly derived from Niven's Kzinti, as an homage, so to speak, to sci-fi that had gone before (along with naming a planet "Niven" in WC2). Regarding the Firekkans, couldn't it have been possible to just...

    Texting while Flying

Now that would be a great hack for the game...if you could link it to your phone so that texts would show up as in-game comms... :-)

WC vs. History: Tools of the Trade (June 6, 2011)

Heh. So "Ranger class" was scrapped and replaced with "Yorktown Class" because Action Stations implies that the Ranger class was old but not small...and the Victory was supposed to be old AND small? So Yorktown was chosen instead because, historically, the Yorktown came right after Ranger...

WC vs. History: Tools of the Trade (June 6, 2011)

What about the Yorktown? Isn't there a Yorktown in Wing Commander? The Victory is a Yorktown-class carrier, isn't she? (Or is she a Ranger-class? I'm still confused about that...) If she was Yorktown-class, that at least implies that there was a TCS Yorktown at some point, right?

WC vs. History: Tools of the Trade (June 6, 2011)

Another fun historical note: There's actually two designations for the Avenger. The TBF Avenger was manufactured by Grumman. All the Avengers at Midway and in the early war were TBF avengers. Late in the war, because Grumman didn't have the production capacity to support both Avenger and F6F...

WC vs. History: Forty-Five Score and Eleven Lexingtons (May 27, 2011)

Actually, if they had been in California, they likely could have been close to Silicon Valley, and we might have ended up with the Hornet. CV-8 (also Essex Class) is docked at Alameda, and open for tours. Very cool thing to do if you're ever in the Bay Area.

    It's a Man's Enigma Sector (May 21, 2011)

Yes, you could just as easily write the line as "Those fools blame the very pilot that almost save the Tiger's Claw!" One game series that has always done a pretty nice job with the gender option is the Knights of the Old Republic series. The player can play male or female, and it changes a...

100 Greatest Videogames of All Time (according to a Fandomania poll)

Except what the heck does this mean? Um...every main line WC game dating back to WC1 had wingmen. And I don't remember any innovations in WC4 about wingmen that would cause confusion (i.e. there was nothing new in the game engine about wingmen). Yes, you had wingmen that you could give...

Can Someone Help with Game Chronology?

You left out Pilgrim Stars. Or, am I talking about a novel that never existed?

I noticed another coincidence. Eagle 5 kind of looks like a Winnebago! :)

Good news just keeps getting better!

Congratulations and good luck! My wife and I just had our first a few weeks ago (boy). Having a kid is a handful, but it's a real blast! (And in any case, the worst bit is the loss of sleep, which, because of lack of sleep, you don't remember afterwards).

Certainly, feel free to use this in the Standoff Guide (whenever that appears). I made it so people could enjoy the game more.

    Hakagas

Just finished reading Fleet Action. Good book. Anyway, it brings to mind a question. The Kilrathi constructed twelve Hakaga-class supercarriers. Only five were involved in the Battle of Earth (the other seven either weren't completed or didn't have enough pilots in time to launch the...

    Full Standoff Mission Tree

OK, I think I have it just about done. I just e-mailed high res versions to news@wcnews.com as Chris suggested, so hopefully they will get posted soon. I made two versions because I couldn't decide which would be more useful. One is a large, hi res version of the tree, with (very abridged)...

    Full Standoff Package

Did you guys ever get around to putting together a full, single package install for Standoff? I remember there was talk of doing that, but on the Standoff website there still are three separate downloads (Secret Ops, Standoff Eps 1-4, and the Ep 5 upgrade). I vaguely remember Pete saying...
