The thing is, Myst also had FMV. I've been playing it again recently. Atrus and his sons all feature in FMV scenes in one way or another (usually involving being confined in books). The 7th Guest was like this as well. Granted there was a lot of pre-rendered cgi, but both of these pre-WC3 games...

I've heard it's somewhat underwhelming on HD format if you already own the DVD. No new special features and the movie benefits less from the high definition than a lot of other movies likely would. At least that seemed to be the general consensus on Fireflyfans.net's forums.

I don't know about lack of depth... If you're talking about plot then sure it has a lack of depth... No one who knows much about the X series of games buys them for story. The X series has been more about doing what the hell ever you want. Want to have a trade empire that decides the economical...

Sorry, I missed the connection with the Sim___ games... That was pretty ignorant of me. I enjoyed a fair few of those games. I just also was terrible at them.

I see one of two things happening with Spore: A) Derek Smart style hype and Derek Smart quality gameplay or B) Egosoft X-Universe game... only not quite the same sort of science fiction. The problem there is that both of the above are rediculously complicated and only one of them doesn't suck...

If you've got raw avi, your best bet is going to be using virtualdubmod (or virtualdub, matter of preference) to compress it into fourCC-compatible XviD. This allows for a quite nice compression to quality ratio. Btw, does the large avi file include sound? if so you should definately compress it...

I had it before. It's a useful mod, but I'm really just not messing with the game too much right now. I need the balance stuff and the stuff to take the compass markers off before I can take the game seriously. BT mod's on my list of mods to download.

I got my 7600GT and the game took on a whole new life... I have everything cranked up except the blood decals (seem kind of pointless) and the shadows exterior and interior are set fairly low (not a high priority for me). I love that you can tweak the water to reflect actors and trees as well...

Hadn't even thought of that implication, that's pretty clever... I'd hate to see that implemented almost as much as I'd love it... using env mapping for cloaking would make the buggers amazingly hard to spot. I imagine you'll have to work pretty hard at keeping gameplay balanced should that happen.
